The Pink Poodle Diaries: Sam's Jewelry & Watch Repair, Downtown Los Angeles!…read more BONJOUR, DARLINGS! It is I, Mozzarella! International pink poodle, professional princess, and connoisseur of all things sparkly! Yesterday, Mama and I visited one of our FAVORITE gentlemen in downtown Los Angeles, SAM! Now, darlings, Mama has been going to Sam for YEARS. She has an extensive jewelry collection, and finding a jeweler she trusts is practically more difficult than finding a parking space in Beverly Hills! But Sam? HEAVEN SENT! Literally, according to Mama. We were there to pick up two of Mama's precious rings. One was her beautiful emerald ring, which had lost a little emerald. THE HORROR! A gemstone had apparently decided to pursue an independent career! Fortunately, Sam rescued the runaway emerald, put it back where it belonged, and gave the ring a beautiful cleaning! He also cleaned one of Mama's engagement rings and secured its loose center stone. MON DIEU! Mama has visited other jewelers who somehow managed to return her jewelry with MORE stones missing than when she dropped it off! DARLING, THAT IS NOT A REPAIR. THAT IS A ROBBERY WITH A RECEIPT! But Sam? Not once has Mama had a bad experience. He's trustworthy, talented, meticulous, and genuinely wonderful! Whether you need jewelry repaired, a stone upgraded, or a fabulous custom piece created, Sam is your gentleman! And speaking of custom jewelry, I have been considering commissioning a diamond tiara. Mama says I already have enough accessories. I BEG YOUR PARDON? I HAVE TWO EARS AND AN ENTIRE HEAD STILL AVAILABLE! FIVE PAWS FOR SAM! If Mama trusts him with her precious jewels, I trust him with my future crown! BISOUS ET BACI! Mozzarella the Poodle International jewelry critic. Pink diamond enthusiast. Currently accepting tiara sponsorships in the form of compliments. Sam is a nice man but make sure you do some pricing research in advance. The reviews here were so…read moreoverwhelmingly positive that I didn't look around and got a little bit overcharged I'd say. After dropping my simple gold wedding band off with the promise of a 1 hr turnaround at $125 to have it sized down (he tried to charge $150), I came back 90 minutes later and the ring had clearly not been touched yet. I shared that I'd spent the last 90 minutes researching online and at other shops in the jewelry market and had learned that this service should cost no more than $50. Some places charge as low as $20. I asked Sam politely what the reason was for the steep price difference. He talked about how much time and care went into sizing the ring, and how he used only the best materials so that the cut would be completely invisible. To demonstrate, he began showing me the process, which reinforced my suspicion that when I walked back into the store, he had not yet begun work on my ring. 10 minutes later Sam was done - the work was good, but the seam was indeed visible. After a conversation the price came down to $100. I'm happy, the work is no better or worse than any I have had done before. But be warned that he clearly upcharges for his charm (he's very sweet and complimentary) and generosity (he did a sonic clean on my engagement ring for free). If you want a deal this is not the place. But it's fine otherwise! Not gonna get scalped but not the most price sensitive option if you're in the jewelry district.
