    Veggie Thali & Plain Dosa
    Angela N.

Delicious! This is a wonderful place to have South Indian food - know the difference in thurs region of food before insisting it's not authentic or up to par. We ordered the Veggie Thali, Plain Dosa, Medu Vada & Chai. Loved all the flavors which brought my family back to India! The Chai and the Channa had a tad too much cardamom flavor for my taste but nonetheless good. Friendly staff. No reservations needed and we sat outside for a lovely meal.

Usually I try to avoid Indian food in Berlin as it's truly underrepresented and simply not good. This place is really different though. They serve South Indian street style food which is made only with fresh ingredients. They also avoid using artificial additions and make all the sauces on their own. Their food causes an explosion of tastes in your mouth - after the first bite of whatever you order you'll just go WOW! There are fastest that you never had on your mouth before. And all the dishes we tried really have some unique and special taste. Be aware though that most dishes are at least a bit spicy. Service seems to be a bit over challenged by the crowd but tried their best. The interior is outstanding. Make sure to book a table in advance and bring cash. No card payment accepted.

I received several recommendations to check out this place, must say I am highly disappointed. The menu is impressive and the variety of food they offer is very good. Disappointment is their price and portion they offer with it. We paid 5.50 Euros for Bombay BHEL which hardly came with 10 spoons of portion. The taste of bhel was nice though. But with the price we paid, we've expected more. Next my husband ordered Veg Thali (Gluton free) which was around 12 Euros. The thali came with a roti (I still wonder if that was Gluton free), small portion of rice and various chutneys and veg curry. Again I will say, the variety they offer is good but portion was too less to fill one person's stomach. I had chicken Dosa worth 13.20 Euros aprx. I expected Dosa with minced chicken filling, sambhar and coconut chutney. They served me one plan Dosa, chicken curry, very small portion of coconut chutney, green and sweet chutney. For this price the portion was far too less. Chicken curry was not special, I enjoyed the green hot chutney and sweet chutney. The service at this place is slow and you have to wait long to get your order served. I had high expectations with this place. But after my first experience I don't think I'm going back again.

Fantastic dinner on the patio - plenty of outdoor seating for the warm summer months. Really good service. Food is on the spicier side, but the waitress was happy to ask the kitchen to tone the spice level down to suit my friend's taste who doesn't take spice. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Indian…read morecuisine is adapted for the German palate and as they tend to steer away from anything too spicy, the traditional spiciness that much of Indian food is renowned for, is diluted. What they call onion bhajis in this restaurant are poor, low-quality onion rings. Onion coated in a fatty batter. The spicy dishes like madras, jalfrezi and vindaloo are much the same degree of spiciness and flavour as each other... not very. I have always asked for authentic Indian vindaloo (so HOT), and I think that they just put an extra pinch of chilli powder in the sauce. Very disappointing. All very similar sauces. The chicken I believe (and I might be wrong), is mechanically-recovered chicken. It always has the strangest texture. Slightly slimy too..! Not a quality ingredient at all. Dishes are 'well padded out' with potato. What did it for us at our last (and very last) visit was when my partner ordered a glass of water instead of his usual beer. When the bill came we were horrified to see that we had been charged €4,40 for a glass of water. Not a bottle brought to the table, not a pretentious, fancy Italian brand.. just plain water 'mit'. There aren't many choices of authentic Indian restaurants in Germany, in fact, I haven't come across any but I do object to being ripped off with poor quality ingredients and obscenely over-priced water. As locals who live a short walk from Zaika and have recently visited the restaurant on a weekly basis, we won't be going again. The hunt continues for an 'authentic', quality Indian restaurant in East Berlin.

We went to Zaika with low expectations cause the good ratings for restaurants in Prenzlauer Berg didn't really convinced us so far. And unfortunately we were again disappointed and don't understand any of the food ratings. I am still looking for a good Indian restaurant In Berlin. The best dish was the bhatura bread. The appetizer mix is just baked fried greasy oily vegetables served with sauce by the side. Everything is very heavy and we simply didn't enjoy the taste or the protein (fish and shrimp). We left dissatisfied and wished to have rather not eaten at all for dinner and ended up paying 40€. Bottom line: taste and completely not worth it.

Saravanaa Bhavan is one of the great Indian restaurant chains of the world…read more The West is finally starting to appreciate what Saravanaa Bhavan has been trying to do all along. Most great cities now have rivals to Saravanaa Bhavan that command respect. The fact that there are other centers of excellence out there does nothing to diminish Saravanaa Bhavan's historical accomplishment. * * * Saravanaa Bhavan is a chain of South Indian vegetarian restaurants in Chennai that expanded first across India itself, and then followed the Indian diaspora to set up satellite restaurants all over the world. The number of Saravanaa Bhavan's in a city reflects less the overall stature of a city in the global urban hierarchy and more reflects the size of the South Indian population that has migrated to that city. Berlin has one Saravanaa Bhavann. The Dallas Metro area has three. Berlin outranks Dallas in the Global Cities Hierarchy But Dallas has the large population of Tamil immigrants. That said, the successful implantation of Saravanaa Bhavan's all over the world is impressive. They operate nearly 100 restaurants in twenty eight different countries not counting their substantial operations in India itself. * * * Saravanaa Bhavan's culinary accomplishment was twofold. a) They introduced much of the world to South Indian vegetarian food. In much of the world, they would have been the first restaurant to serve dosas, idli, and the distinctive South Indian rather than north Indian curries. b) They introduced much of the world to Indian Chinese food - the reinterpretation of Chinese food that was developed in India. Gobi Manchurian - one of the most intoxicating dishes on the planet - would have had its first serving in many cities in a Saravanaa Bhavan. Their menu was huge. They included North Indian as well as South Indian specialties. You could eat at a Saravanaa Bhavan for weeks and never repeat a dish. And the execution was absolutely positively excellent. Nearly everything that came out of their kitchen was to die for. * * * Saravanaa Bhavan is just as good today as it ever was. However, as the flow of South Indian immigrant professionals grew and grew, the number of South Indian immigrant restauranteurs grew as well. There was money to be made serving the great dishes from home ... And more and more people went to the exotic cities of the world to re-create those fine South Indian dishes in foreign locations. So now all of those cities have many places you can go where you can get absolutely wonderful South Indian and Indian-Chinese vegetarian dishes. I live in Austin, Texas which does not have a Saravanaa Bhavan - but has a vast number of South Indian software engineers, professors and doctors. They eat at Sangam Chettinad which is an absolutely superlative establishment. * * * That said, I will always grab a chance to eat at a Saravanaa Bhavan if there is one in the city I am in. One tip that may be helpful. Don't put your food on the white rice that accompanies most of their dishes. The flavors of Saravanaa Bhavan's dishes are so wonderful that you do not want to dilute them. Putting their food on plain rice is like serving their food on Wonder Bread. Eating their stuff straight up though is like dying and going to heaven. Except that the next day you get reincarnated and can do the same thing again.
