In what looks like a newly built court yard with a bakery and a brewery this cheese shop really brings a modern touch to the village of Cartmel. We only found out about this shop after paying in the carpark and getting a little ticket from the machine that says see the noticeboard for this months offers with this voucher. Where's the noticeboard? Nowhere, but there is a man in the little ice cream hut in the car park who knows what the offers are. £1 off a £10 shop in the cheese shop. WHAT CHEESE SHOP? The hunt is on.... Found it.... and it's amazing!! I think the best thing about this shop (apart from it bring 14degree inside and a million degrees outside) are the little hand written tags on all the cheeses saying who made them - the actual name of the person not just the farm, where it is made, the type of cheese and what kind of rennet, so easy for a veggie to pick from. The man who served us, Harry, was very knowledgeable about all the cheeses and we listened to him serving other customers while we decided what to buy. There were many other customers! A lovely little busy shop. We eventually decided on the most local Cheese made 2 miles away called Saint John (a smelly cheese similar to stinking bishop), the best goats cheese i have ever tasted called Prospect, a Red Leicester and a smelly blue. We ate them all with a load of fresh bread from the bakehouse next door....

Don't get frightened by the rated 3£ price, as cheese usually won't be cheap anywhere, it is quite reasonable compared to the ones in LONDON. The owner tries to stock locally made cheese as well as cheeses from around the world. It is up to you how much you want, none of this pre-packed rubbish sold here. Fresh eggs of various sizes, including duck eggs are available as well as a range of honeys, jams and fruit butters. To complement your cheese a full range of crackers and biscuits are stocked as well as various pickles and chutneys. So if you want a pound of mousetrap or a small piece of Garstang Blue, the Crumbly Cheese is the place to go.

I went with the full Cheese Experience (3 courses) while my husband had two. We went with two different cheesy starters, both delectable. I had the chicken with smoked cheese. The breast was perfectly cooked in a lake of cheese sauce, with the rosti beneath it (like a thin hashbrown) added a nice crunch. For my dessert course, we shared the ginger cheesecake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Neither of us are cheesecake people but we declared this the best we have ever had. It wasn't as sweet as American cheesecakes, and had a pleasant cragginess with ginger warmth as a complement. The ice cream was also better than what you find most anywhere in America--fresh and creamy. What a glorious meal!

My favorite has always been the Garstang Blue its very mild in tasting not like most Stilton type cheeses. They also make some delicious cheese and onion pies on site and their blue cheese sausages just cant be resisted. I have given a 5 star review as in my opinion Dewlay tick all the right boxes. A quality company. quality produce & pleasant staff. Well Done.........Keep up the good work in making Cheese for us across the County.

The staff are great and will happily gut, scale and fillet fish to your requirements. They do tend to sell up, so if it is something in particular you require, then call there first and get your order in. The prices are reasonable for the quality of fish you are buying and it always fresh. Worth a visit if you enjoy good fish.
