I needed a place that focused on loving people rather than alienating them. As it turned out, Eastside Christian Church is the perfect place for me. Their motto that they follow is 'Love God, love people'. That is what it is all about. The mood is very casual. The music is good. And the teachings are amazing. If you' ve never really been into going to a church service (or maybe have not been welcomed by traditional churches) you should give Eastside Christian Church a try. And check out the espresso bar too for a caramel machiatto!

Contemporary christian music that really opened the service up well. The pastor, Andy Ziegenfuss, was so personable and actually quite funny. They do an excellent job of maintaining the inside and have had all the finishes, paint and gold leaf redone in the past decade or two. The Music Director does a superior job in directing the choir. They sang a capella for their first song and we all know that it really showcases the voices. The sound was magnificent! The man I believed to be the director had a voice which will take your breath away. He told us after the services that he is classically trained. He could perform at Music Hall in my opinion! Truthfully, I was surprised to not see the pews crowded, but it might have been the day. They have a Health & Wellness Ministry who staff regular blood pressure screenings, provide information on health and promote physical, mental and emotional wellness. Not only is there a crisis & suicide hotline, but psychiatric emergency services and they have great tips to fight loneliness and make friends. Another nicety is that they announce the birthdays of the week. We would definitely visit this church again.

Went to St Matthias as part of our pilgrimage to visit a different Catholic church once a month…read more The church was more modern than the ones we've been used to as it is fairly new being only 50 years old. None of the ornate stained glass windows or architecture, but the church was nice enough and there were attractive wood carvings of the stations of the cross. No kneelers. We did enjoy the choir accompanied by a pianist. There are hopes in getting an organ in the future. It was one of the few churches that still have a choir in front facing you and we all liked it that way. The parishioners were very nice and asked if we were visiting. Kudos to the priest as the topic was on the Holy Trinity which can be confusing for many people as it is hard to explain.

This review is for the Lenten fish fry, not for the church itself…read more I am super impressed with this fish fry. We chose it on a whim because traffic was too bad to get to our first choice in time and this one was close to the husband's work. They have a lot of options for dinners - cod, shrimp, salmon, fish sandwich, pizza - and each comes with three sides! All are either 7 or 8 dollars, which is some of the cheapest around. I ordered the shrimp dinner with au gratin potatoes, fries, and green beans. Husband ordered the fish sandwich with mac and cheese, au gratin potatoes, and coleslaw. The food was fantastic! Everything came out cooked perfectly and piping hot. The mac and cheese was a winner with my husband because it was baked casserole style, instead of the velveeta version. My shrimp was deep fried with a thick breading and really tasty. The au gratin potatoes were creamy and hot, and not too salty, which tends to happen with that type of dish. Even the green beans and coleslaw were good. The fries were a little too salty, but they also came out hot and fresh. The ketchup packets on the table were not good, so give them a pass and dip your fries in the Frisch's tarter sauce provided. Be prepared to wait if you go at peak times. They take your order fast, but we waited 40 minutes to get our food. It's worth it. I saw a couple of people around me with the salmon, and I wish I had gotten that as well!

I couldn't get over how beautiful this church is!!! High ceilings, stained glass, pretty tiles covering the walls. I was also happy to see how packed the mass was. It's awkward to write a review for a church; let's start there. I'll stick to the concrete, and…read moreleave the rest up to you. Mass Times: Saturday 4:30; Sunday 8:15, 10:30, 5:30 Daily Mass: 8:00 in the chapel on the third floor of the Catholic Center (enter the ground floor double doors off Herman St.) This church has the feel and beauty of old Catholic churches-elaborate interior painting, stained glass, stone structure. Fun fact: It served as the Cathedral during the 40's and 50's. (It's very popular for weddings.) The congregation is led by a Franciscan priest, and is diverse in many realms. This is the Newman Center for UC, so there is a student population-most prominent at the 5:30 Sunday masses. Logistically, parking can be a bit tricky-especially for the 10:30 mass during the academic year. The entrance to the parking lot is off of the University Ct./Fairview side as the street curves. The entrance to the back parking lot is further up Herman St. There is additional parking on Sundays in the Deaconess lot, also off of Herman St. or University Ct. Meeting space is available in the Catholic Center. Entrances, again, can be a little tricky-there are three options. There are double doors on the ground floor off of Herman St., there are glass doors on the Herman Street side at the top of the stairs, and finally, there is an entrance to the hall from the parking lot on the side of the church rectory-it's down about 4 steps. I've found people friendly, they have parish-wide events frequently throughout the year-and these usually have great pot-lucks!
