Additionally, the people are some of the most kind, interesting, and genuine people I know. We have had a very easy time connecting with people through Life Groups, the mom's group, and volunteer opportunities. Many of our closest friends have come from this community. We really like all the pastors. Their sermons are smart, thoughtful, and Christ-centered. Our children really enjoy the children's ministry and their friends there. The volunteers are passionate about loving them well and sharing the joy that comes from following Jesus. I look forward to them growing and being part of the vibrant middle school and high school ministries.

An update on my previous review as I should have included more detail. Our personal experience as a…read morefamily at Grace happened during our first attendance with our young child attending the children's ministry. We encountered what we felt was inappropriate behavior of a sexual nature from another child in the children's ministry. I brought this specific issue to the attention of the church leadership. My email was cc'd and forwarded around but i only received a very generic and corporate-type, canned response from the children's ministry staff with zero resolution to the concern. While they acknowledged the matter and spoke about it via email, the issue remains unresolved from my perspective. I did not receive adequate reassurance that the situation would be handled with the necessary level of accountability or that steps were being taken to ensure it wouldn't happen again. In fact, I was even accused of demanding personal and confidential information from the other family when all I asked for was that they are taking precautions for it to not happen again. I was not at all asking for personal information whatsoever. I felt ignored and accused. As a member of this community, I felt it was important to share that I did not feel supported or heard when addressing a serious safety and boundary concern. I would advise others to be aware of how leadership handles these types of internal grievances.

Bible believing church…read more I have been to two services so far. AWesome worship with about 5 singers and a live band. I really like the bible based messages so far and the other members have been really nice. It has been fairly small services as it is a small church. It feels very friendly and welcoming. They have a cafe to hang out and fellowship. I received a small gift and summary booklet of "the purpose driven life" as a welcome gift as a new attendee. It's Sunday, so why not write a review about a church?…read more My good friend invited me here because the play he wrote was going to be featured here as a part of Black History month. At the last minute he asked me to close the production by singing a song. The play deals with the issues of HIV/AIDS in minority communities and the church's response to people dealing with the disease. Get ready here comes the sermon part of this review.... There is a new HIV infection occurring somewhere in the world every 6 seconds...can you imagine that? African-Americans account for 50% of the new HIV infections Black and Latino women are one of the fastest growing populations of newly diagnosed HIV infections. Young adults between the ages of 13-25 are the second largest age group of new HIV infections. OK, I'll get off my soapbox now, but get tested...OK? So the event took place in the parish hall, and boy did it bring back memories for me. The checkered and speckled linoleum floor, metal folding chairs and tables, large coffee pots and styrofoam cups, and the big kitchen that was staffed with the older church women. Women in the church kitchen always looked happy to me, don't know why that is. Maybe they're happy to be doing something for others. Anyhow, all the church folk were standing around, chatting, sipping coffee and some were standing in line for food. Another person in the play who was sitting next to me was taking in the scene and said "People will come to church for the food and for the love." The people at St. Luke's certainly made us feel welcome, there was a lot of love. The fried chicken lunch and complimentary Red Rooster hot sauce wasn't so bad either.

The reason i took a break from church is because I was looking for one that felt like 'home'. I attended a Baptist church in Lakewood for a couple of years... but I never felt like I was welcomed....the church had cliques and the people felt 'fake'.... I did not feel love there. You had to be a certain type of person...a certain look. Buuuut as soon as I walked thru the doors of Christ Chapel I was welcomed with a hug and smiles. It's a small church with a huge heart. EVERYONE is welcomed here. You see all sorts of people...young, old, gay, straight, singles, couples, rich, poor, well dressed and casually dressed.... It does not matter who or what you are. The love and word of God is here. There's lots of singing here...don't worry if you can't carry a note/tune because the music/singing is loud so don't be shy... Sing along! The sermons don't feel 'preach - y'...if you know what I mean. It feels more like 'sharing'...communicating. Not sure how to describe it, but I guess it's like friends talking about Jesus /God /the word. My husband was raised in a very catholic family, he's only attended catholic services...but he's joined me a few times here and he's really enjoyed it. Which says a lot about this place. You leave here feeling light, loved, stronger and safe. I encourage anyone that feels the need to get closer /understand the Lord to come visit. Or anyone out there that feels lost, or feels like they need someone /something to stop by...there is NO pressure or judgment here. Can't wait to meet you.

Our experience thus far at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church and School has truly been a wonderful one. As church pastor, Father Gerard truly cares about the church and the parishioners. He has a welcoming spirit to ALL who enters the church doors.
