The masthead says "The Voice of the Black Community." It is distributed in dark green newspaper boxes and is free. Most of the boxes are in Uptown Charlotte and, according to wikipedia, primarily in African-American neighborhoods. Its circulation is 22,305. This week's newspaper is sixteen pages with the above-the-fold headline and photo of North Carolina's new Lieutenant Governor-elect, Mark Robinson. Robinson is a Republican, which presents certain challenges when the Governor is a Democrat. And the Post provides a great amount of ink to discuss. The Life section is timely with a holiday menu and recipes and lifestyle stories, yes, from a black perspective. I have visited Charlotte three times on business this month. An avid reader, I enjoy buying the…read morelocal paper. Unbelievably, i have yet to find one for sale on the newsstand. This is even on Wed and Sundays , when they publish. Today, a Wednesday, I visited multiple 7-11s , Kwik Trips, independent gas stations, and even CVS. No newspapers. Nothing in CLT Airport, which is unbelievable. I've visited over a dozen stores there, in every terminal and no papers EVER. Nothing local, nothing national. I have spent so much time trying to give you money. What an insult to people who want to read and who want to support journalism. Every review here demonstrates you have a serious distribution problem. If you can't even get your own product to the airport, you deserve to go out of business. Sad what has happened to this paper (I remember it fondly when i went to Davidson College in the early 00's)

Not only is the magazine pretty to look at, it has (in my opinion) some of the best, freshest and most interesting content out there. I especially love the fashion and food sections and always look forward to reading the interviews with local chefs and entrepreneurs. The editors here are certainly in the know with what's hoppin' in the Queen City and my day always turns up a bit when I find this little treasure in my mailbox. As mentioned, the features are really great and I'm always dog-earing pages for later. While you'll find quite a bit of advertising in these pages, it's important to note that it's done pretty tastefully. This is not a magazine that rests on its laurels and advertising sales - the content is king. I especially love the Best of The Best issue every year and was really impressed with both the beer feature and the 100 best dishes in Charlotte issue in 2010. If you want to be in the know for Charlotte happenings and entertained in the mean time, Charlotte mag is a great option. Keep it up Charlotte mag and keep it local!

I pick it up whenever I see it, and my low-ish expectations are always surpassed. Each issue tends to be built around a theme, and the writers do a good job of building relevant content for the Charlotte readers without making it so localized that it turns into a repetitive snooze-fest. I'm impressed at the variety of topics they cover, like a recent issue on cancer, and the ways they make it appeal to all kinds of women. It's target audience is the professional set, but it's not so fantastically yuppie-fied that little old freelance writers, sitting at home in their pajamas and sipping coffee in front of their laptops, can't also get something out of it.

Charlotte Weekly is more geared toward church-going soccer moms than someone like me. I get disappointed if I'm out for lunch or getting coffee somewhere by myself and all they have is Charlotte Weekly for me to read. Occasionally, they'll have an article about the production of a movie, something fun going on in Charlotte, or information about a city project, but it's a bit too conservative of a city newspaper for me. And have you checked out their website? Yeesh. They have more dead links than a graveyard of...um...links.

The Weekly has informative updates on mass transit, public schools, neighborhood crime, stories…read morethat apply to local residents, which I respect. But what I really like is their two page spread of movie theaters and show times. It's the quickest way to find what's "now playing" and where.
