My friend and I were going to Winston For karaoke, I wanted to grab food around before and stumbled upon this taco shop here. My friend had been there. I had not. It's kind of a hole in the wall just around the corner from the main street of Newport. And wow, I was really impressed. I ordered two multia tacos, which are technically not tacos, but ordering two equate old four tacos. I ordered El Pastor, and I was so impressed with the quality. It was so tasty and so good. The ambiance is very casual and quick. It's a great spot if you're looking for a quick tasty bite in the area.

Chula Tacos has aggressively expanded from its OG location in the South Bay area to this newest branch in Ocean Beach. The suite housed a former pizzeria and grill that barely lasted one year. I believe they have a dedicated parking lot to the east of the building that was shared with a fairly new chicken wing joint. I found a nearby curbside spot instead. The L-shaped dining area had four-top tables against one wall, a countertop facing the sidewalk, and then another countertop along with high-top tables in the back. What has made this taqueria buzzworthy is their "keka" which is an oversized quesadilla made with a thick, handmade corn tortilla. Tacos, vampiros (crunchy tortillas with melted cheese and protein), mulitas (soft tortillas with melted cheese and protein), and gringas (flour quesadilla with protein) were the other food categories. Interestingly, burritos were not offered. Beef, pork, chicken, and cactus were the protein choices for each type. I selected a mixta which contained two proteins. My picks were carne asada and pollo. White onions, cilantro, salsa, and avocado were the toppings for the grilled meats. Cucumbers, radishes, and lime wedges were provided as garnishments in a small cardboard tray. Although the tortilla was substantial to hold the contents, I found the price of a keka to be expensive for the amount of food. Mine was $16.49 while a single meat keka was one dollar less. A regular burrito at any local taqueria was more filling at the same price, if not cheaper. I finished 3/4 of my keka and took the rest home. I also ordered a cup of horchata agua fresca to help wash down my item. It had more sugar than some places, but my sweet tooth didn't mind. I was satisfied to try a keka without having to drive a longer distance to do so. For the price and quality of my order, I gave a rating between three and four stars for my dining experience at Chula Tacos.

I didn't realize this was the new location! It's my first time at Chula Tacos and I ordered a Keka. The Keka is a massive fresh made tortilla quesadilla with your choice of meat, guacamole and all the fixings! I chose half carne asada and half al pastor. The carne asada was bland and the al pastor was delicious! Both meats were greasy and eventually I got grossed out with how much grease was dripping off of it. The guacamole was also very bland. As far as the salsas the orange salsa was really good and the green one was okay. The service was good, there wasn't much of a line on a Saturday night. The ambiance was clean, they didn't have a working AC so it was really hot with the air from the kitchen. I was bummed that they wouldn't allow me to take chili oil to go that was on all the tables.

Fast, friendly service, this place is definitely the spot for amazing tacos! Fresh corn tortillas, fresh, loaded guacamole and pico, and incredible meats cooked fresh to order. The meat was tender with just the right amount of char, packed with smoky, flavorful goodness. The Al Pastor was probably my favorite, but the Carne Asada was just as delicious. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Definitely a place I'll be hitting up again!

We came in during dinner time on a Friday night around 6:30PM. Short line and we got our food to go. The price was more than what was advertised on their website. Food: Seems like everything was made to order. We ordered a carne asada keka, al pastor keka, carne asada taco, al pastor taco, and a horchata. If you're eating with your hands, be prepared that it's messy and the excess will drop out of the keka and taco. The kekas were huge and definitely filling on its own. The tacos were also pretty filled for a taco. The sauces were so very good and delicious. The horchata on the other hand had a very powdery taste that wasn't very appealing. Overall the food was pretty good and would come back only if I was in the area and was really hungry. Unfortunately I've had better tacos so this isn't in the top spot for me. Service: Quick and easy. No issues with how we ordered and even rechecked with us to see if they are making the right order. Ambiance: Latin Music mostly being played by the cooks. Cute Mexican papel picado decoration hung around. Parking: You're gonna have to find street parking and it may be difficult to find. We parked a block away.

The Al pastor vampiro was good. The Al pastor has good flavor and char, but it wasn't anything crazy. They are also very small. The pollo mulita was good, but again nothing special. Good char flavor, but outside of that I wasn't blown away by any means. The salsas were okay. Both were on the salty side and didn't go great with the saltiness of the al pastor in my opinion. The chili oil was a better option with it.

Pleasantly surprised with this taqueria. Came in for the beach vibes and stayed for the food. I ordered an asada mulita and an al pastor keka. Portions were big, I did share with my mom and we were both full after. Even my dog got some of the meat before his walk. He was a big fan. The Al pastor was my favorite. The asada was smokey and good but the Al pastor outshined it. The salsas were great, they were actually spicy. The cebada was too sweet but nothing water couldn't fix. Priced are appropriate for the area, I paid $29 for everything and it was more than enough. This is for sure one of the better spots in this area.

We were at the farmers market and noticed there was a Chula Tacos right here. What the heck! We recently tried the one on Palm for the first time. We decided to get a couple of Kekas to hit the spot. If you haven't tried one you're not living! Service was quick and friendly. I'm sure they will have much success in OB.

Finally one of my favorite tacos spots is closer to me ! Their carne asada is some the best flavored asada I've had. Marinated with love! I got the 2 pollo, 2 carne asada , and 1 no pal taco to start things off. Then my buddy got the pollo asada vampiro he loved it. I got a carne asada keke with is their signature item. A huge quesadilla taco ! Must try ! My buddy got a carne asada mulita and he loved it also. Agua Fresca fresh in front of you. Lots of seating inside. Staff was nice and restaurant was clean.

Simply just amazing. I have been craving thick corn tortilla you can only get from Tijuana. Keka hit the spot. More than fulfilled my craving. Both carne asada and al pastor have great flavor.

Pollo Mulita on the left and Al pastor vampiro on the right, both delicious! One was plenty for me for lunch

i had the vampiro with al pastor and the mulita with pollo. loved them both! the chicken tasted like it came off a grill, rather smoky flavor. the vampiro was absolutely incredible and both of sauces i tried were delicious also. the one change id suggest to them is getting rid of the harsh fluorescent lights that were installed by the previous owners. the glare is obnoxious imho. highly recommend trying this food!

Small newly taco restaurant in Ocean Beach. I was welcomed by the staff as soon as I entered. I've been to other locations and the tacos were good! The adobada taco was really good. The carne asada mulita was good but I feel like the carne asada meat itself just needed a little more seasoning.

OK, so you could tell everything was fresh. Everything was made in house and everything taste amazing. The flavor of the food was incredible. The place was clean and well taken care of you could see that from the start. The service here was amazing for what it is, let's face it. They don't have a waiter so you can't judge that, but the second could you step up to the cashier you get treated with a smile you're graded your order is taken in a very polite and calm manner. They'll answer any questions you may have I had a cake and a taco both Carne Asada. I will try the chicken next. I tried both the table salsa, which was a chili oil, which was great. I also tried their orange salsa, which was amazing as well and the place is clean affordable and you can really enjoy your lunch not too far from the beach, you can take a walk down to the beach. It's a great location. I strongly recommend this place to anyone. That's looking for good authentic tacos. right down to the handmade tortillas made to your order. You can literally see the person making tortillas right behind the cashier. This is an amazing place strongly recommended I will be back.

Very loud music and the food is expensive. It hard to enjoy the food with the volume so high.

I particularly enjoy the Adobada tacos from Chula Tacos because they serve a very generous portion of meat, guacamole and are very tasty. The first time I tried them was at their H Street restaurant in Chula Vista, but that location is temporarily closed. I decided to try their Palm Avenue location since I was in the area visiting family. The service was friendly, and the tacos were prepared very quickly. The restaurant was clean. I'm looking forward to the H Street location reopening since it is much closer to where I live. Happy Yelping :)

Sometimes, there are nights when only tacos can fix me. It's no secret that San Diego has tacos in…read morespades and being so close to the border, you'd think that a quest to find the perfect taco would be as simple as rolling down to the nearest taqueria. Except, it's not quite that simple. Many beloved staples have gone downhill, while some newer spots that might boast things like a Michelin mention or multiple locations ranging from TJ to Vegas contain more hype and gristle than tender meat and substance. Enter Chula Tacos. Chula is, and always was, the type of place that makes you forget that you're not actually in Tijuana. While part of me misses their OG Market Street location, seeing them with brick-and-mortars feels hard-earned and well-deserved. This location on Palm in IB is relatively easy to access from the freeway, but parking can be tricky. You can safely assume that it will be busy and you will either have to be very lucky or be willing to find a spot on the street. Out of all the times I've been here, it's always been crowded enough that I've never been able to find a table inside, but I enjoy sitting out on the patio next to the ahumederos. The first thing that hits you walking through the door is how amazing everything smells. The queue to the cashier takes you near a window showing the kitchen where you can see the Chula Tacos team making fresh tortillas, slicing meat from the trompos, grilling up jalapenos, nopales, onions, labio, and tripa. For me, it's not so much a challenge to decide what I want, it's more a challenge to keep myself from ordering everything. My usual is four tacos: two asada, two al pastor (but I've heard that I should also try their world famous keka). The tacos though? Perfection. Every time, the asada is the juiciest and most tender I've ever eaten, the al pastor is succulent and flavorful, and no taco in front of me is long for the world. At $3.50 each, every one of them is absolutely loaded. Three would honestly fill me up, but I always want four. After getting burned by spots that ask around 75% more and deliver anywhere between 25-50% less, Chula Tacos feels like an absolute godsend of a Tijuana-style taqueria and I can't see any other contenders being my go-to. So, when I say "Tacos will fix me," what I mean nowadays is "Chula Tacos will fix me."
