In addition to daily visits, she even personally called to see how we were doing. Dr. Lin takes the time to explain the reasoning behind treatments. I appreciate that she explains what to expect with a newborn. As a first time mama, she has alleviated many of my worries and concerns without making me feel silly. In addition, she seems to take a genuine interest in how both my husband and I are doing. Unfortunately, my family has had to relocate. I sorely miss Dr. Lin.

Nurse Practitioner: The NP was attentive, listened, and was helpful throughout the visit. Dr. Dubey: My experience was generally positive at first. Over time, however, I felt that our interactions changed. I began to feel questioned in ways that left me doubting myself, and it became increasingly difficult to get connected to supportive resources for my son. For example, I needed a medical form completed for my son. Although he had an established epilepsy diagnosis and was already taking antiseizure medication, I was told the form could not be completed until records from his original diagnosis were obtained. I found this odd because, from my perspective, his diagnosis was already well established. The delay made it more difficult to access the support we were seeking. When discussing autism-related concerns: A comment that concerned me was when Dr. Dubey stated that she has seen many patients with autism and that, just by looking at my son, she would not be able to tell he has autism. As a parent, that statement stood out to me because autism is a spectrum. Every person may present differently, and I believe it is important for healthcare providers to remain open to that reality. Even after seeing many patients, no two individuals with autism are exactly alike. I believe humility and an individualized approach are essential when evaluating children with developmental differences. Overall, I left several appointments feeling dismissed rather than feeling like we were working together to understand my son's challenges. Front Office Staff: During a well-child visit, I was repeatedly asked to complete a screening questionnaire after I had already declined. At the time, my son, who has incontinence issues, was trying to use the restroom, yet I continued to be asked to complete the form. I was also told that because we have Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ), I was required to complete the screening and that not doing so could jeopardize our insurance coverage. This statement concerned me, so afterward, I researched the topic and learned that some clinics may receive reimbursement for completing certain preventive screenings for eligible patients. I cannot say whether that applied in this situation, but I believe patients should receive clear and accurate information about whether a screening is optional or required and should not feel pressured into completing one, especially while attending to a child's immediate medical needs.

I didn't find out from the doctor, but from our medical group--after a check-up had already been scheduled. That lack of professional courtesy, especially when a child with documented needs is involved, was deeply disappointing. It felt as though our family was being singled out. I was told to wait outside the office during visits, and even asked to turn my child away from the TV in the room--something that highlighted a bigger issue. While some may not question the use of TV to pacify children during medical procedures, it's worth thinking about what message this sends. When we teach kids to ignore discomfort as long as a screen is on, we risk desensitizing them in ways that can lead to problems later. That's not about this office specifically--it's a broader concern that many parents overlook. I don't know who made the final decision to remove us--perhaps it was administrative--but it's clear they didn't want to "get involved" in the complexity of our situation. My six-month-old son had to undergo open-heart surgery at a children's hospital in the Bay Area, where there were no issues with his insurance during his stay. Afterward, he had follow-up appointments with his cardiologist, and there were no problems with insurance verification. However, for his pediatrician the office began saying he couldn't be seen for his follow-up due to a lack of insurance coverage. I contacted the insurance company, and they confirmed he was covered. When the insurance called the office, the front desk staff insisted they couldn't rely on what the insurance said over the phone and had to go by their internal system. This was incredibly frustrating. For over a month and a half, I went back and forth with the office and my insurance to get my son seen. After yet another call, I asked to speak with a supervisor. The front desk staff then admitted they had been looking at the information incorrectly and said my son could be seen. I pressed for a supervisor because I felt the situation was unacceptable, especially since it had been over a month since his surgery. The supervisor acknowledged that the office should have listened to the insurance provider and assured me the issue was resolved. However, when I later tried to book an appointment for my daughter, I was informed within 15 minutes that she couldn't be seen due to insurance issues. Hands down their staff is very sweet, educated, comforting to your child and we LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They are ON TIME, which is so important when you have a sick baby or working and taking in your baby to get checked. The way Dr Ostrea goes out of her way to make sure your questions are answered and the way she treated our daughter when she was going through a tough fever was beyond my expectations. I hope she doesn't retire anytime soon.
