As the cliche goes, you have to be your own health care advocate, but I had an experience of being treated nastily for being my own health care advocate. I called and found out that an appointment for some complicated procedure had been scheduled for me, without my knowledge, and when I started asking questions, the receptionist hung up on me. I experienced that as disrespectful of someone who has a life-threatening health problem (atrial fibrillation), and was simply trying to get information about their own care. That was one of the moments when you know that as a patient, you're a piece of meat being processed at the meat-processing facility.

I met with two cardiologists and both were difficult to understand (english language deficiency) ... in fact one was so bad I had no clue what he was saying. They were also suggesting surgery even though the frequency of occurrence with me in infrequent and lasts only minutes, not hours. After that experience and upon reviewing the results with Dr. Caulkins, I realized that he is way more expert in the medical details of atrial fibrillation than the Mayo doctors.
