This facility offers many special services to the community, including meals, group therapy, and counseling. Although it has a religious affiliation, the values are nondenominational. No one is turned away based on faith, but -as can be expected- most people here are "active" Christians.
I don't care for religion. It's not spirituality I oppose, but rather the righteousness of mortals who really don't have any better clue than the next person about the "great beyond." Nevertheless, religion has certain benefits, like providing meaning and comfort to individuals. Its other valuable gift is a commitment to service. The kind of selfless charity offered by religious people almost invariably trumps the "philanthropy" of WASPy society organizations or the community service of fraternities and sororities.
Never more is this apparent at Christ House, where a cook from my restaurant runs the kitchen on Sunday mornings. It's not the fanciest joint and you won't receive a sparkly invitation in the mail, but if you need a good meal, spiritual guidance, or help of any kind, Christ House is there to serve the community.
Having helped prepare the food myself this morning, I must say the meals are pretty darn awesome! Cheesy grits, scrambled eggs, fresh biscuits, 2 kinds of sausage, hash browns, and orange juice were all on this morning's menu.
