This was my 3rd time visiting Christ Church. The January 17th sermon was on tithing given by the Senior Pastor. After listening to it my wife and I had some serious concerns. The concept of tithing was presented in a way that it focused only on the financial aspect. When in actuality tithing embraces one giving his or her time, talents, finances and mostly one's heart. Now I'm not saying that this church doesn't emphasize one' sharing one's talents in the form of service, because I saw many people serving. But it may have been a better approach to incorporate these other concepts in the sermon.
I will give a personal testimony which will prove a point. For the last 3+ years I have not been able to give my full tithe, however, I gave all of my talents and a lot of time to my church, and God has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. I believe this was because He saw my heart. Hebrews 4:12 (Amplified) says the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two edge sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature] exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. And verse 13 continues saying And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open an exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom
Our second concern is the upcoming 90 day Challenge to begin in February in which new believers or believers who are not tithing are challenged to tithe for 90 days, and if they don't receive a blessing that improves their finances, they can have their money refunded. My wife and I believe that is not scriptural, because you are trying to back God into a corner and force Him to do what the church wants. The Bible tells us to test the spirits. In other words to line things up we hear with the Word of God. And for those who have the reverent fear of the Lord He gives them the spiritual gift of spiritual discernment which enables one to see things as they really are. In Ecclesiastes it states that God does things in His own time. That may or may not be in 90 days. Some times we have to be patient and wait. Daniel's answer to a prayer was delayed 21 days because of spiritual warfare.
Our third concern is that joining a church is a two ways street. The church looks at you and has certain expectations, and the one joining should have the same expectations. One thing every church refrains from offering is that they will help those in need who are struggling to tithe while the church is having them focus on Malachi 3:10 and Leviticus 27:30-31 which says if you borrow from your tithe, you have to return it and add 20% to it. Is the church prepared to help this person with their rent or medications? And what if one's family member is sick? The Bible says if we don't help our family members when we are able we are worse than hypocrites. These are big concerns.
Answers to our prayers involve many things one of which is the level of faith that one has.
That should be mentioned also. Because of these concerns we are now praying about joining the the church.
Respectfully Submitted,
