Previously I reviewed Chopin Grand Café as four out of five stars, but felt disappointed on a recent evening visit during April 2017. Beforehand it was possible to get a two course evening meal in Chopin for circa £16 or a two course lunch for circa £12, which is reasonable for the standard of food and style/ ambience of the restaurant itself. Unfortunately, Chopin now charge £21.95 for two courses in the evening, which is expensive given their limited menu selection, average-quality food and noisy BYOB environment.
Vegetarian options are extremely limited, thus I had the only veggie starter and main on offer. A small, poor offering of three breaded mushrooms with aioli and a main of vegetable lasagne served with a small side salad and tiny piece of bread. On booking our table I queried the price increase since my last visit and was advised this was because Chopin only serve high quality food - but food was average, plus portions were small and vegetarian options limited. Out of a party of four, including two vegetarians, none of us were overly impressed with our food, and in particular we vegetarians felt overcharged for our meals.
When we booked our table Chopin advised they could make an alternative vegetarian main, if we requested such in advance, thus allowing them to order the ingredients (e.g. pasta, risotto etc). But there should be more choice for vegetarians on the menu - I don't know days in advance what I want to eat and would like a few vegetarian dishes to choose from, without having to think them up myself! I would have been reasonably happy enough at the older more reasonable cost of circa £16, but not at £21.95 per person plus corkage. An underwhelming experience, only worthy of a two and a half out of five rating. Sorry Chopin - I won't be rushing back. read more
