My normal stylist was out of commission and I needed a cut, so here I was, in the lobby, eagerly anticipating meeting the person who was going to cut my hair. The woman at the host table offered me a drink (I politely declined,) and then started a conversation about the different products available on the shelves in front of me. I didn't leave with any, but it was nice to learn about what the salon stocked and how it could help my hair. Anyway, a few minutes later my stylist arrived and led me downstairs where the magic happens. I showed her a few photos and explained what I was wanting and she went to work. Roughly 20 minute later - I had a new cut. The cost is competitive. I paid $40 plus tip (February 2026) and was in and out in about 40 minutes. Wow! What can I say? I walk into this cool business and find a bunch of great rock 'n' roll. Memorabilia, pictures, posters concert, flyers, etc. do cool factor is awesome. I strike up a great conversation with Cindy the front desk person about seeing live music, including people like Johnny Cash, Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn. Then I remember why I came in I was desperate to get a haircut. I had gone to at least three or four barbershops prior to finding this cutting place. Although they take walk-ins, it helps to have an appointment because they are busy. I had to wait an hour and a half so I went to the local vintage shop boomerangs right next-door, which was pretty awesome Anyway, my cutter was Felicia who did a five star job on my hair I got the cut that I wanted. I got to shave of my neck, the warm towel the shampoo and blow dry. This will now be my go to location as my cutter for 25 years in Los Angeles Unfortunately is sick and may likely need to retire. I got 4 haircuts at this place since I moved to KC about a year ago. What I can say is the results are very uneven (pun intended, as per below) depending on who you get. My first time I believe was with Ashley, it was OK. The next two was with Felecia, who is actually really good. But when I was making this last appointment she didn't have any availability for over a month, so I selected "Any stylist" and got assigned to Stacy. I showed her a photo of a previous haircut as I always do with a new person, and simply asked her to do the same. I should note that I'm very particular about my hair style. Although it's nothing too eclectic, it needs to be a shear cut and I've learned the hard way regular barbershops can never get it right so I don't mind paying extra. Anyway, Stacy assured me that she could do what I showed her although towards the end it became clear that she couldn't. The entire time she was cutting, she wouldn't stop complaining about how long I let it grow (hello, that's why I need a haircut), and she also cut herself with the scissors. I'm 34 years old and never in my entire life have I witnessed a hairdresser cut themselves on the job. Anyway, with some additional guidance I thought we ended up with something at least serviceable. But while I didn't realize at first when I first left there, I noticed a few days later that towards the top, she actually left one side about a whole inch longer than the other, which I now have to go get corrected somewhere else. I was sad that the brookside location closed down since that is the one I frequent most, but I decided to give the Westport location a try. It has the same vibe as brookside, if not a little bit edgier/cooler vibes . I snagged a complimentary beverage and sooner than I know, I've been summoned. I head downstairs to the hair stations and Denaia asks me how I like my hair. I showed her a picture and she nailed the look pretty well. The staff is friendly and you can tell the staff is what makes the place fun. Seeing coworkers get along made the experience a cool and positive atmosphere. Okay...cool place,like real cool place. That's why it's getting two stars and the only reason. As a male who really cherishes his beard & is not from Kansas City I asked the front desk girl who's great with beards. She says everyone ....like Okay... Nope! I don't remember who did my beard but she butchered the F**K out of it. Didn't know how to blend, didn't know how to line and the fade was a 3-4/10. No straight razor (not her fault) but like...seriously if you're not good at beards don't take the client. Just hack job. Luckily for me my facial hair grows back fast. We needed a new barber/salon for our eight year old son. The choices where we live have consistently disappointed us. One privately owned place cut our son's skin and shamed him for crying. Another chain salon had beauticians that clearly had no idea what they were doing. How does one mess up a shave cut? It's a simple number on the clippers. We tried these places a number of times, since it's possible those were bad days. Nope. I found Chop Tops through Yelp and a recommendation. Crystal was so good to our son. She made him feel welcome and comfortable. We, also, felt quite welcome when we first walked in. Crystal listened to our son and his ideas. He was so happy with the result, as was I. His grandpa told him he looked sharp. This is not a $10 cut. It will cost more, yet we think it's worth it for what we received. We have made an appointment for next time. read more

DO NOT expect anyone to answer questions honestly because all they care about is money. They will not be up front about whether or not a stylist is the best person for the job, they will just say anyone can do anything well when it is simply not true. This is a common experience with Chop Tops. Some details about their customer service are nice but at its core they have 0 interest in working with you. Disclaimer: My mother has been a hairdresser for 20 years and I know it's not an easy job. I had a good experience the first time I came, asked for someone who knows how to cut black hair, they were a little slow but they cared, asked questions and overall did a good job. That person stopped working there. The second time I asked for someone who could dye hair and was experienced with curls, the receptionist said sure thing. I came in for a CONSULTATION and THEN an appointment. My hairdresser told me while she was working on my hair that she had graduated cosmetology school earlier THAT YEAR and I thought ok maybe she's just talented to make up for a lack of experience. She seemed lost in my curls, needed more product than she thought she would, and charged me $50 EXTRA from the quote she gave me at the consultation because of it. $200 total not including tip. I was not amused but she seemed to have done an all right job so I let it go. A few days later I wash my hair and the color comes out(I don't wash my hair every day and their policy is that they will fix hair within 24 hours). I also realize that the back of my hair had not been dyed evenly because it was splotchy. I call to ask for help or a retouch and the receptionist doesn't even offer to get in touch with the stylist. She says it's common sense that you wash red hair with cold water(it was burgundy, not bright red) and it's not their responsibility. Nobody mentioned this even though I had told them I had virgin hair. This was a while ago and I am still fuming. I am just leaving a review now because I hadn't been on Yelp at the time and can't believe this place is reviewed so highly. Chops Tops is a great place to get a cut for men. A lot of clients are women, but every time I'm in there, the waiting area is mostly men checking in for their appointments. Making an appointment is HIGHLY recommended, even if you call 30-60 min before you want to get in, it helps. Otherwise you can enjoy some time watching classic TMC movies on their tv and have a glass of wine a nice cold Hamm's beer, or some water while you wait, FOR FREE! Just make sure you at least tip properly. Toss me a buck or two for the drink, I mean, it's the least you can do for feeling good while you get your cut/scalp massage during your wash. I go for a fade cut and Hayli does me right every time. She's precise and efficient with her time. If she knows I have to get back to work, she gets the job done, without cutting corners or using tricks some other barbers at other shops might do to speed things along. She's remembered me since the first couple times I've been and always asks about my daughter, which is a nice way to be greeted and to start friendly conversation. The business itself is stylish, featuring hipster-ish style decor, bumper stickers of all sorts from music artsists and tattoo artsists to artwork framed on felt materials and a rustic tin roofing as the wall decor. I recommend this place because they're always polite and timely, offer a beverage for your cut, and are much cheaper ($25 vs ~$40-50) than their competitors down the road, Hudson/Hawk. read more

I've been back to Chop Tops twice since my last review and I feel an increase to 5 stars is absolutely warranted. I've kept my same stylist (Jenny D) and my past two haircuts have left me happy to look in the mirror again. I definitely need to go more often to maintain this bob, because my hair grows too fast. The awesome thing about Chop Tops is that it's affordable enough to allow me to go the once every five or six weeks that is ideal for my hairstyle. Something else I truly appreciate is that I'm in the chair for only a half hour tops, which is just the right amount of time before I get fidgety and thinking about the 10,000 things I need to be doing. Seriously I can not say enough good things! Especially about our stylist Sharon! We have a squirmy 2 year old who was in desperate need of a haircut and we had no idea where to take him so I called this place on a whim. I called at noon on a Tuesday and they were able to fit us in at 3:45. AND THEN we were out running errands and popped in 30 minutes early because we were already in the area and they were able to get him in THIRTY MINUTES EARLY! Which in my experience is completely unheard of in the hair world. So we showed up with our whole family, my two year old (obviously), my fiancé and our one month old. Not only did they seem completely unbothered by the entourage, but they put us at a station on the end with an extra chair - beyond accommodating! And Sharon - like I said, crazy good! Not only did my sons hair turn out PERFECT, but she had more patience with my kiddo than I do some days. She explained to him everything she was doing and interacted with him the whole way through! Just got my top chopped at chop top and needless to say, I am pretty pleased! The great customer service began with a cold beer (on the house) when I walked through the door followed by an entertaining, albeit enlightening, conversation with one of the owners over pomade brands. Following this, I was taken downstairs by the excellent Emily who was very knowledgeable about the task at hand and even had some tips on how to make my hair look my best for my wedding that upcoming weekend. Another satisfied customer! I came here because of all the great reviews and because they cut men and women's hair. I have a short hair cut (pixie cut) and I have gotten some meh haircuts and one traumatic haircut from different salons. I got a haircut I liked from a barber but they moved soon after. So I was left looking for a 4th time in 2021 for a new haircutter; anxiety ensued. I called and asked for someone good with short hair and they made me an appt with Ashley C. The front desk people were extremely pleasant and helpful, even offered me a drink unfortunately it was mid workday for me or I may have indulged to calm my anxiety. Anyway, my hair was long enough to be mistaken for a mullet so I needed a haircut and I talked myself into it by saying it will grow back. I'm so happy I went here, I will definitely be back! But what matters most is the haircut: she had good communication about what I wanted, checked in with me throughout the haircut, and even gave me a neck shave (new experience!). Jenny D is a badassador! (an ambassador of badassness). Finding a new stylist this year was unbelievably traumatic for me, I had to find a place that had the scene and the style to match Dyeabolique. These people don't care about your business. I guess they're too busy and can afford to lose customers. I've waited through the whole pandemic and put my name on a cancelation list once they opened back up to get an appointment becuase they were 2 weeks out. I get the frustration of the pandemic and was willing to wait. After 3 weeks on the list I called back to get an update and apparently that list was different than their actual reservations. So instead of doing me a courtesy of calling to tell me you could get me an appointment you did nothing. I finally get an appointment today and called to say I was running 5 min late. I live in the northland and was coming down for this haircut. I walked in 8min late and the young girl told me they canceled my appointment but I could reschedule! Are you kidding me?! On average I usually end up waiting about 10 min for appointments since I've been coming here. It can be frustrating when it goes longer but I never throw a stink. I have really liked 2 of the 4 or 5 haircuts I've gotten from here. But they aren't worth the headache. read more

*Sigh* I will never go to another hair salon ever again. Chop Tops is everything I've been looking for in a salon and no other place could possibly compare. I just moved from the Raytown area to the Plaza area, and have been searching for a new salon. After reading all the glowing reviews on Yelp for Chop Tops, I made an appointment and got scheduled with Ms. Jenny. No way could a hair salon be as perfect as Yelp described. Oh, but it was! In the waiting area, they offer you complimentary water, soda, beer, or wine. The owner hangs out and chats with you like you've been best friends forever. The girls are all dressed in short, black dresses and trendy haircuts. Jenny was very attentive to what I wanted done with my hair and took time to listen to my requests. The shampooing of my hair was the best! Not only did she wash my hair with great smelling shampoo but she also massaged my scalp and it was the most relaxing thing ever. She then cut, blow dyed, and styled my hair. She was chatty, but not overly chatty. She knew when to make small talk and when to just let me relax. The entire experience came to about $40 which was way lower than I expected. The owner gave me some free samples and a $5 off coupon for my next visit. It's that time again... time to get a haircut. My hair prior to coming here was 2 months and 5 days long which was longer than I thought would be work appropriate. Besides, it was becoming more difficult to style my hair without my Ice Spiker water-resistant styling glue (haven't bought more and I currently use Enjoy Texture Cream or what's left). lol I'm getting sidetracked but before I forget... FYI, her mirror was distorted and was the worse one there according to what she told me. lol I thought my hair was uneven but it was just the distorted mirror. We talked about a lot of stuff (including different hair products) and it made the time fly by faster even though it already flies by quick due to the haircut I usually want. After last month's disastrous walk-in haircut (see my review of Cuts Plus), I was in dire need of a good cut. I had been hoping to get a walk-in appointment at Chop Tops, but late on a Tuesday afternoon they were full, so I made an appointment for another day. When I arrived for my appointment at 0900, I was eagerly greeted and offered my choice of beverages. It was great having an ice cold Diet Coke to help wake me up. I was then lead downstairs by Amy, the stylist who would cut my hair. The salon section of Chop Tops is eclectic; there are several types of pinup girls, old advertisement art, music memorabilia, and other random objects on the walls. The music being played was a Patsy Cline inspired Pandora channel. I loved it. I explained to Amy what I wanted done with my hair, and she gave me an awesome cut, which rivals the one my old stylist in Omaha did. She spent a lot of time carefully cutting and restoring my hair to a desirable state. After my hair had been cut, Amy used some shampoo which must have been menthol infused, because it left my scalp tingling. She also massaged my head and temples, which felt especially amazing after a long night out the night before. After that, she styled my hair with some wax, which I ended up purchasing because it was made with tea tree oil and it did a great job of keeping my hair in place. I am definitely going back here for my next cut. I love the atmosphere and it's nice having a cut and feeling pampered at the same time. Then I heard two staff members complain about how lazy another one was, as I was sitting and waiting in the lobby. I've worked in environments where this occurs, which is completely natural. But there's a time and a place for it. Behind closed doors, but not in the lobby space with your customers there. Wasn't completely thrilled with my haircut either. It was "okay". Her shop is (have to shout her out) my go to every time I hit KC from DC. So! First I must start with Jim, "the appointment man." Not being originally from KC, I was blown away by his politeness, professionalism and humor as he booked me with the fabulous Krystal B. @ 2:45pm the same day I called. Why is this amazing? Only because he fit me in on a Saturday! Reining from DC, I was skeptical about a lady from the other side doing my uber thick and unruly tresses but upon arriving "on time" for my color appointment Krystal B. looked me in my eyes and assured me that she was experienced. From then on she had me hook, line and sinker. I explained my vision of color and she actively listened and asked questions! I was even offered chilled wine/cold beer/water to drink during my treatment (fancy!) Convo during the service was awesome and even other lady beauticians came by and made small talk with me. Everyone was friendly and complimentary as Krystal B. fearlessly worked on me. I did not have to wait extreme time periods and she did not double book me. Impressed wAs just a small way of how I felt. My color upon completion was EPIC! I will post an after shot. mY Only caveat, was due to being an AA woman with thick hair, after a blow out/good blow dry I desperately also need a flat iron to my roots. Although I had to flat iron my hair when I got home to straighten out my unruly kinky/wavy roots the color which is what I received was Awesome! The entire process took 2.5 hours (super efficient) and hit my pockets at $120 and of course I tipped my girl $10. "Quality over quantity," is always my rule of thumb. I got my hair cut here last week with Cora and as lovely and friendly as she was, the hair cut was bad. I just wanted a trim of the style I already had, which was a bob with bangs and some BLENDED layers. I have no idea what she did. The layers don't blend at all and my ends are just choppy and sharp. Looks like I have big random chunks of short hair throughout my head that just sit on top of the longer hair. My hair just falls flat, has no shape and somehow looks LESS healthy now than it was before my trim. I was hesitant to leave a review because I don't like being THAT person and I wanted to make sure I wasn't overreacting. I just showed my hair to another stylist and she was horrified. I'm new to town, needed a stylist who knows her way around curly hair. I found Chop Tops, is pretty close to my house. I called, requested someone with curly hair experience. I got a wash and cut by Cora and I ha e to say this is the best cut I've had EVER. I've had a few very experienced gals cut my hair and thought they did a great job, but Cora blows them all away. She really knows curly! If you have curly hair and want a great stylist call and make an appointment with her ASAP. I just made my second appointment. read more
