Prices are reasonable, the frontage is pretty and inside there's an eloquent, old-English vibe, thanks to intricately carved wooden décor and large sweet jars on each wall, both of which circle the shop's central counter. On my visit, the staff greeted me with smiles and I was instantly overwhelmed by the lashings of lush confectionary on display throughout the store. Everything inside looked absolutely delicious and the strawberry sherbet I purchased definitely fulfilled my expectations. This friendly, high street sweet shop is well-stocked, gorgeously atmospheric and definitely worth stopping by next time you visit Boldmere High Street. I can safely say that I'll be visiting again myself very, very soon.

Jens is even decked out like sweet shops were, bright, colourful and mouth watering. Every time I'm in there, I feel like I'm in the opening scene of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in the sweet shop where the bloke sings Candy Man while dishing out sweets to the kids. Jens is just like that. The real beauty of the shop though is the large selection of sweets on the shelves. Traditional and original sweets, party bags, kiddies favourites there are over 500 different types of retro confectionery Jen tells me. She caters for kiddies parties and weddings. So, if like me you fancy a trip down memory lane when we had proper sweets, get yourself over to Boldmere and pop in to see Jen, she always has a smile on her face, well who wouldn't working there.

The staff offer a very impressive and unique gift-wrapping service, which includes either a store-themed envelope or mini sweet-box to cushion your tasty purchase, and a blank card allowing you to address it to a friend as a present! The shop is well laid-out and acts as part-confectionary store and part-coffee shop, with very reasonable tea and coffee prices and a pleasant, friendly atmosphere. The vibe inside doesn't quite match the old-English splendour of Jen's Sweet Shop next door, but Treat Street's customer service is second to none and it's exclusively diverse stock delves beyond the world of sweets and into rare and unusual chocolate bars. I bought my Aunt a Cointreau flavoured dark cocoa bar as a spontaneous gift. She loved it and I would most definitely shop here again! Kudos to the great staff and even greater products!

Its always nice to have a treat and this stall has plenty with a few not seen before yummies too. Today at last I got a packet of Peanut Butter M&Ms as recommended by Desta H and I'm looking forward to trying them (^_^). Noticed a few things I need to try esspecially #TAB (brings back memories from the 70's) I brought my son a Million Dollar Bar Chocolate - I would recommend this, I only had 2 squares and it was luxuriously creamy - scrummy. At £2.50 a bar, as a treat I'd say go for it :-)

Whilst Birmingham has done so much for English chocolate already, it's hard not to feel like rationing is still on when you look at all the exotic and gawdy wrappings and packaging from the American brands. Our British sweeties feel a bit bland in comparison. As Yankees is also essentially a little cart, the shop further taps into a neat sense of by-gone Americana. It feels like a tornado has picked this place up from the Magic Kingdom and dropped it here. I fully expect to hear a barbershop quartet start up as I nibble, suck and chew. Just a reminder that Yankees also does American crisps and pop - just in case you want to give your sweet tooth a day off. So, all in all, this is the place that makes us jealous of America consumerism again, I wouldn't be surprised if they also stock the nylons and tobacco I can't find.

Based on the traditional sweet shops of the past Mr Chill's has every sweet that you can imagine! The shelves here are literally packed full of traditional sweets in large jars that literally go from floor to ceiling. The hardest part of a visit here is deciding what to have....after much deliberation I went for a quarter of sherbet strawberries. Such a classic! The shop itself is located on the edge of the Arcadian and is very easy to find but a word of warning, it does seem to have limited opening hours. Be sure to have a check if its going to be open before you head down to have your sweet craving satisfied!

Stepping inside is like stepping back in time. The dark wood counter is laden with all sorts of tooth-rotting fun, like gobstoppers, licorice whips and sherbet fountains. The shelves behind heave under the weight of giant jars of boiled sweets. Some old-style sweet shops tend to feel rather fake and forced, but the historical setting of Mr Chill's and the authentic interior make it all seem real. It must be said that the sweet prices are far from old fashioned, with a 100g setting you back about £1.20. Best get saving that pocket money!

Sweets & Treats

(1 review)

Sweets & Treats is a sweet shop in Kingstanding which used to be excellent but has gone downhill…read moreover the last 12 months or so. It used to be really cheap with a massive selection of sweets and crisps, but now it's nearly all bagged sweets and boxes of chocolates which are not much cheaper than those in the supermarkets. It's quite a big shop and always used to be crammed with stock, but now the shelves are sparse and there is very little to choose from. The bagged sweets are run of the mill that you can buy in any newsagent and although the prices for these are quite cheap, they are not very good quality and the hard sweets always seem to be stuck together. The chocolate fudge is lovely, but this is hardly ever in stock at the moment so I rarely buy any of these sweets. The biscuits are rubbish now as well, it's nearly all those 20p Crawford packets with a few Cadburys Animal biscuits and Maryland cookies thrown in. Sometimes the biscuits have only a couple of weeks before the 'use by' date and I've bought some from here recently which were horribly soft. There are chocolate bars, almost all foreign and budget brands, and crisps for sale in here too. The crisps are good value and Sweets & Treats have quite a good selection including Walkers crisps, Pom Bears, French Fries and others. They usually charge £1 for a multi pack which is a great price considering they are almost double this price in Asda. They have a nice selection of boxed chocolates such as Quality Street, Ferrero Rocher, Roses etc but they have recently hiked the prices up on these so you might as well take advantage of the excellent special offers in the supermarkets at newsagents at this time of year. Now Christmas is approaching they have started stocking the tins of Celebrations and Roses, but again they just cannot compete with the £5 deals that most of the major shops seem to be running this year. The staff are awful now too, they always look bored and not happy to be there. There is little chit chat in the shop and I always feel like they can't wait to see the back of me when I'm paying for my stuff. At one time I used to visit here at least once a week to stock up on the munchies for us all, I'd spend around a tenner and get a excellent selection of goodies to last us for the week. Now though I only bother when I'm in the area anyway and even then I'll often walk around and just come out with a 50p chocolate marzipan bar! It's just not worth it anymore.

Intrigued as I am by anything oriental I decided to go in and buy some 'snacks'. Now if you, like me, have a bit of an obsession with all things Asian then you will have probably tried some pretty weird stuff like Wagashi sweets and bean curd buns. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the sensation overload that is 'Homemade Mocha'. Trust me; you want to steer clear of these freaky little snacks. Falling somewhere, aesthetically, between a willy and a dumpling, these dusty, odd little sausages will make you think you are eating something very raw and very wrong. They come in flavours such as 'Red Bean' and 'Green Tea' and are clearly not worth the £2 you will pay out of curiosity. I ate my whole pack anyway so that I got my money's worth. I'll probably be dead by morning or at least have a few tentacles. Other delights to be found in this store are Hello Panda biscuits (amazing!), noodle snacks, wasabi peas and 'Ball Cakes'. Hello Kitty fans will be in for a surprise when they chow down on those BBQ flavoured seaweed crisps. YUMZ!

The tiny shop somehow manages to stock masses of unusual food, from Japanese sweets to herbal flavoured jellies to noodles to biscuits. The fridge inside is also packed with healthy cold drinks and ice teas. I mainly go here to purchase herbal teas, particularly goji berry infusion. Although this specific tea is little pricey, the taste alone is well worth the expense. I'd describe Anytime Snacks as a condensed, cuter version of Sing Fat Ltd. Although saying this, I often find more products here that tempt my taste. Additionally, staff are very friendly and always talk to you and smile when you are inside the store. Whereas at Sing Fat, the staff rarely acknowledge that you are there. Anytime Snacks is well worth a visit if you like bright colours, little oddities, sweets or want to explore food that you've never tried before.
