I downloaded this app specifically to leave a review for this business/"museum." A friend and I visited this museum in April 2022; we were excited to get an understanding of chocolate making. The trip was incredibly disappointing and filled with microaggressions erasing the Black and indigenous experiences.
The overview of the history of chocolate completely erases slavery as the means of production for sugar and chocolate in much of the world and misrepresents and outright falsifies some information about the Spanish colonization of the Aztec empire. I have a degree in International Studies and a big part of my focus in school was international trade processes and relationships between Europeans and indigenous Americans in the 16th century. I studied the history of the chocolate, sugar, and coffee trades, so I was shocked to see the lies represented. For example, two portraits of Cortes and Montezuma are in dialogue at one part of the exhibit about what occurred between the Spanish and Atzec Empire. Much of what these two portraits say (they are digital videos) is misleading as to the history of chocolate. While I understand that this is a museum on chocolate, it is incredibly sloppily done. A history expert should have been consulted more in-depth on many issues. There is also language throughout the exhibit that obscures slavery's role in chocolate production (ie. chocolate's production is crucially linked to sugar produced by slave labor; this is not mentioned at all the discussion about growing and making cacao and chocolate). That's just the first part of the museum. In the second, there is a historical marketing image for chocolate presented without context and featuring an image of a Black man in a scrap of cloth with a shovel in a field, contrasted by the image of a European man enjoying chocolate. With context, I understand the inclusion of this historical image; without, it is incredibly irresponsible.
The worst of all though was in the gift shop. My friend and I wanted to look for gifts for our families; almost immediately on entering the shop we saw a racist poster for sale, prominently displayed. It featured a Black minstrel figure, red lips and all, and the word "Bananas" underneath. We were shocked and left immediately; on our way out we saw this image was also available in smaller prints. I wish I had taken a photo; it was very shocking and disturbing.
Basically, do not go to this museum if you are looking for a responsible look at history. If you want chocolate, just go to a chocolate shop, there are plenty in Paris besides this farce.
The museum should bring in a history expert to revise their mess and lies and curate their collection responsibly. They need to remove the racist products from their shop. This would be the first step to creating a better organization. Wonderful food like chocolate is a great idea to explore the history of, but this museum fails to show actual history. Food should help us unite; instead, this organization creates an environment full of racism and microaggressions. read more
