A genuinely hospitable man, who loves to serve you the food he and his family been making over the years. With every order he'll remind you to "eat slowly", which is something that I never fully understood, but undoubtedly means something along the lines of "if you eat slowly, you can enjoy it better". My recommendation: have a "tja sieuw" sandwich in the sun. Pickles and sambal? Yes of course. In my mind, the perfect cafe perfectly captures the "third place" concept - cozy enough to feel like home. I think the Dutch call that vibe - 'gezellig'. Finally, because I am also slightly basic, the perfect cafe must be insta-worthy from the design of its store to the plating of its food and coffees. Sand's, Cakes and Bubbles is a perfect cafe. From the cozy decor, to the menus hung cutely on clothing hangers, to the beautifully garnished food and drinks, everything about Sand's Cakes and Bubbles is insta-worthy and gezellig to the power of lekker. Big fluffy pancakes, eggs and bacon and all sorts of breakfast delights. I didn't order that though. Nope, I thought I'd order a Philly cheesesteak in Rotterdam. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a Philly cheesesteak. It was a nice beefy sandwich. Next time I'll likely stick to traditional breakfast type food as it did look good coming out. Oh, the steak and eggs were good! Service was a bit slow, but they were packed as I previously mentioned. I'll definitely go back again and order something different at a not so busy time.

My plate was charcuterie style, with a mixture of things presented on a cutting board. I am not a big fan of bread in general so I should've asked to sub for something else. The portion was closer to the smaller side, but enough for me. Everything was fresh but quite bland. The bacon was too crispy for my liking and the bread wasn't toasted. I did enjoy my coffee and ended up coming back another day to grab one to go. I will give this place another shot when I am back in Rotterdam.
