What I ended up eating was a cold, sad-looking, limp lamb kofte sitting in a bed of about three wilting salad leaves, and then some really bog-standard rice that would have been hotter and more enjoyable had I just cooked it at home, and some bean-based tomato thing that I can only describe as lukewarm red pulp. And, they made a big song and dance about the fact that we wanted to pay by cheque, despite the fact that they offered no credit card facility. We were made to feel as though we were being extremely cheeky and seriously inconveniencing them, which rather soured the whole experience, and irritated me because we were paying good money in their restaurant, and a cheque is still money, thank you very much. All in all, very disappointing: cold, lame food that felt reheated (and not enough, at that. I used to go there quite a lot when I briefly lived in the area. I didn't have a washing machine and so I used to use the laundrette across the road. Despite being pleasant enough, I could not spend a second longer in the place than was needed to put my washing in the machines. There's just something about laundrettes that promotes an almost allergic reaction in me... but I don't mind the dentist or hospitals... all very peculiar! So the upshot used to be that I would head straight over to Biblos and buy myself a large latte, before sitting myself at the breakfast bar arrangement that was mounted in front of the window and then I would plug my computer in. Happy days! Apart from the café in Better Food there's nowhere else to grab a decent coffee in this area, unless you are willing to walk half a kilometre to the St Werburghs Farm caff.

The restaurant itself is huge, with long benches and tables that makes it perfect for large groups. It is super casual and always has a real buzzing atmosphere - because it always seems to be busy! I've been a few times now and had a few of the pizzas. They do a pork pizza which was far too salty, it was almost inedible. But the spicy pizza is off the chain! Loads of flavour and the naga chilli blows your head off. I love spicy food so it was right up my street. They also do a pizza with an egg in the middle - which looks really good. If you're not a pizza lover then they do really good pies as well. The food is cooked in an open kitchen which I really like. Behind the bar they have about a dozen boxes of cider. You can order a tasting tray which I think gives you 5 1/3 pints and you can chose which ones you want. I love flat ciders so this was perfect for me. To go with the casualness of The Stables, you have to go to the bar to order food and pay. Which is pretty old school but it works.
