The presentation is casual, simple, and good. House of China's aesthetic charm is one of its main draws. Charlie is a freaking artist and has been decorating the restaurant for decades. Upon entering House of China, one enters a whimsical jungle of faux grape leaves and plush monkeys. A vulture fountain, hand crafted by Charlie in the early 2000s, stands guard over the restrooms. Actually, I can't offer an accurate representation of what the restaurant looks like now because Charlie is constantly redecorating. If you want an approximation, though, it'll be something along the lines of Rainforest Cafe meets Chicago Chinatown meets Dada. The service is personal and kind. They don't take credit cards, you fool. Why the hell are you trying to use a card for a bill that comes in under $10? If you're looking for the soulless garbage they shovel into troughs at Panda Express, get the hell on over to the mall with the other bums. It's kind of my gauge to how good the place is because I figure if the can't get this dish right I can't expect the more complex ones to be. We ordered the Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles and the summer rolls. I'll start with the summer rolls. We typically see them with shrimp and the menu didn't say anything otherwise. There was both shrimp and chicken in them, and they were quite large and loosely wrapped. 2 for $8 was steep though considering the chicken was tough and the shrimp was strong tasting. I couldn't make myself eat them. My husband managed to eat most of one. They came with what was obviously a jarred sweet and sour sauce -another disappointment as peanut sauce is so much better and what I was kind of expecting as that is usually the norm. The drunken noodles had a nice initial flavor but the heat was more than expected for medium. My husband and I always get medium for Thai dishes and typically they are just right or a little light in heat for us. This one they had been a bit generous with the heat so much so that it was almost hard to eat. It said there were a variety of veggies but it really only had green and red peppers. There was a decent amount of chicken in the dish. There may have been some green onion but only a couple of pieces, it felt like it was enough so they could say it was included even though you had to hunt to find them. Last to the Pad Thai, my typical initial gauge for a new to us Thai place. There was a generous amount of noodles, but were on the verge of undercooked. It couldn't figure out the flavor, but they were quite sour compared to any I've had before and I'll have to say it didn't do it for me. I would say they were almost eating wha I would call sweet and sour noodles if I was to give them a name. There was no richness or depth to the flavor at all. Again the items in the noodles were sparse at best. Very little chicken in this one, a crumble of egg, and I think I saw like 4 bean sprouts.. not acceptable for $15. They did have the required peanuts on the top though. Oh, and a slice of lemon, something else I'd not seen served before with Thai food. I had high hopes at this being a great place to visit when we are in the area since we love Grand Haven and I love Thai food but this ain't it. Bummer. So sad.

We usually opt for the vegetarian option here as I do not like the taste of their meat (chicken or beef). I do not mind their tofu (fried) and we like their veggies. They have different levels of spice and we usually opt for mild because my hubby has a sensitivity to heat. However, if it's just me, I might level up to medium. That (to me) is fire. I will be sweating, emptying the water carafe and blowing my nose about half way through. lol. As long as we stick to what we know, we are never disappointed. Happy to have some Thai in Jenison and it appears to be well supported... mainly through takeout. Although, there is a small dining room inside if you want to be waited on.

Olivia was our server, and she was so kind and courteous. She always made sure we had our questions answered and waters filled. The roast pork spring rolls were equally satisfying: generously filled, tightly wrapped, and served with two dipping sauces that paired perfectly with the pork. Everything came out quickly and piping hot, and the portions were no joke. You could easily split a dish or take half home. The woman at the counter was full of energy--cheerful, efficient, and completely dialed in. Even during a steady flow of orders, she made sure we had everything we needed. It was $15 for a McCormick's tasting curry sauce with oddly cut veggies found under the cheese. The chicken had been toasted so long I thought they were croutons until I took a bite. Not worth it. The cheese sticks for the kids had some curry sauce brushed on with melted cheese and jalapeño. The man knew I was ordering it for the kids and the menu didn't say it came with anything but bread and cheese. SMH. That was a wasted $11. All of this took over 20 minutes to prepare. We were the only patrons. The place was dark, dusty and when we sat at the booth offered to us, I almost fell through to the floor.
