Guess my expectations got set a little high from the reviews. I was in town from Richmond, VA and was going to be spending much of the evening late in the office I was visiting in nearby Romulus. Had a hankering for some Chinese so went straight to Yelp that recommended a 10min trip to China Garden. Customer service was excellent, the place was clean, the food was fresh but the taste was just not there. I wasn't looking for anything fancy but was hoping for a something a bit more appealing. The egg drop soup was very bland and the eggroll seemed to be the frozen-to-deepfryer variety. But the Orange Beef held the biggest disappointment. While the portion was huge, it was a fried, gummy, oily, breaded mess. I ate three pieces at the office and pitched the rest along with half the soup. I have been eating here about once every 2 weeks for probably 5+ years. This is my absolute favorite Chinese place that I have ever been to! I have been here many times..always happy. My daughter is in love with the sweet and sour chicken, and I am a huge fan of the General's chicken. Don't expect much from the decor (ack) or the service (what else you want? you done? ..total?? you want total???) but the food is what its all about. Never had a bad meal. I ordered from them during my lunch break. I got some soup and chicken and vegetables- the healthy version. They gave me the biggest portion of food in my life. The rice and sauce were on the side. Delicious! My husband and I have traveled from Southfield, and now we travel from Ypsilanti to come to this Chinese restaurant, it is by far The Best! Their General Tso's Chicken is the best I've ever had. Sometimes I try to stray and try new things, but always end up going back to this. This place is legendary! I don't understand why it doesn't have 5 stars from everybody, I would drive hours for this place if I had to, luckily I don't. As a vegetarian I love how many options they have for me. Even when I ate meat I loved this place. It's a takeout place. They have a few tables and chairs for dining in, but they don't serve your table. The staff is fantastic. When I call and place an order I'm always skeptical due to the language barrier at first, but then I remember who I'm calling! China Garden never messes up my order! Don't be fooled they may look like your typical Chinese restaurant but it is good. The food is excellent, the service is OK. They make whatever you want you can customize your order, I really like that flexibility. I live near a popular Chinese restaurant in Canton but I prefer this place price is good and food is good too. They also give you a lot. read more

Good, cheap food. Not the very best Chinese i have had but its always good and you get your monies worth. Good customer service, walk in and pickup your carry out order and walk out within 1 minute. I don't recommend eating there in the winter because they always have the heat turned way down (maybe off) in the store front and at times its just about as cold up front as outside. I am guessing because of the small size they keep the heat down because the kitchen gets so warm and its more of a place to pickup food than to sit and eat. read more

EDIT: from 5 stars to 1 I'd give less if I could! I have been going to this place for 4+ years now. Never once had a problem (customer service has always been a little crappy), I ordered dinner a few nights ago for my family of 5, 3 kids under the age of 10...we had a late night and I needed quick dinner. I ordered carry out (the same thing I order every single time, we are vegetarians and never change our order). Our order was over $40+ and I spend $100+ there a week. We are good loyal customers. On this night my order was completely wrong. All the food was extra spicy (3 kids can't eat that) extra food I didn't order but paid for and the quality was embarrassing! There were also meat products we are unable to eat and definitely did not order! I called and was given the absolute WORST customer service I have ever received!!! I was told there was no way to prove they messed the order up. That I could drive all the food all the way back and then wait while they re-made all of it only after returning the wrong food. This is all at 9 pm. I explained we already drove there and waited and I could not load 3 kids back into the car this late and wait for food to be cooked again, on a school night. I explained id cook (as we could not eat the food due to spiciness and meat products we do not eat) and would like a refund and would get it tomorrow. Not only was I accused of lying, and argued with I was also hung up on. The poor girl who answers the phone begged the "manager" to refund at least one item and he refused! Considering we spend roughly $400 a month at this place and have been loyal customers for over 4 years and never once complained, you'd think they would gladly refund our money! Instead we were treated with disrespect and a complete and total lack of responsibly!! I am always leary to try new Chinese restaurants but my favorite place keeps making changes and not for the better. So my in laws suggested this place so we decided to give it a try. The place was very busy which was a good sign and the place was pretty clean. Best of all i could watch them prepare my food which was a real plus in my opinion. The staff was okay but not overly enthusiastic. So we ordered 4 combo meals of sesame chicken, general tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken and szechuan chicken (yes we like chicken lol) combo includes fried rice an egg roll plus the meat. One thing I didn't like is the sesame and general chicken were chopped into tiny pieces and then breaded thus getting to much breading but the flavor was there. The sweet and sour chicken was soggy and the sauce was very bland. My go to dish is the szechuan chicken and it is hard to find where it is good and flavorful and this one was excellent it only lacked in gravy only because it soaked into the rice which was my fault for not ordering extra like i usually do. We also ordered crab rangoon but it tasted off so it's not something I would order again. What ultimately pissed me off was that they don't give you plum sauce in your to go bag so we had four egg rolls plain that really lacked in flavor, i saw packages of duck sauce but i didn't put it together because anywhere i have went made their own plum sauce and apparently these guys don't. The wait wasn't long considering how busy they were. This place definitely has the potential and with a few changes they could be exceptional definitely losta star for no plum sauce.
