However, I attended an event recently that was catered by Zócalo and the food and flavors were surprisingly delicious (read: spicy). I knew I needed to find the brick-and-mortar restaurant soon. Note for Americans: Don't come here expecting TexMex. There are no starter chips and salsa, fajitas, or queso dip. There is crema, spicy salsas, black beans, and soft and fluffy corn tortillas. We arrived midday on a Sunday and were happy to see that Zócalo, unlike other nearby restaurants, was actually open. Our server was great and brought us multiple pitchers of margaritas, and we shared the parrallada and some chips with guac and black beans. All told, it was less than $60k clp for all four of us. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday! The only downside was that as the restaurant saw more customers, or server was noticeably less attentive and forgetful. We did not get our waters as ordered or to-go salsa. Nonetheless, it was an excellent experience and we'll definitely be back. If you like Mexican cuisine and decor, give Zócalo a chance. The menu has something for every taste and budget.

The employees were super nice. Especially since my Spanish skills are pretty dismal. The food was ready I think minutes. The steak was a bit tough but did not take away from the great taste of the bowl. My colleague had the same bowl with the carnitas and loved it. The portion size was very large. I loved that they had a separate area where you could get some sauces and other things to add to your meal. The green sauce was tasty and not too spicy. The ingredients were fresh. Four of us ordered from here and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I will definitely come back.

They also have a self serve salsa bar with the most impressive variety I have seen in town. The seating area is clean with options outside and in an upper room. I will say that as an extranjero it can be frustrating when the staff don't know the menu. So when you read something right off the menu they look at you like they have no idea what you are talking about. Our example was that we asked for extra tortillas and the person who was taking our order did not understand then told us they were really called quesadillas after we pointed to the menu (the menu lists "tortillas"). We also realized they over charged us which caused me to reduce the number of stars. The bottom line is the food is good but check your bill.

What I had: pisco sour sabroso, fish tacos, Mexican Cobb salad, draft beer Ambiance - 3.8/5 It's set in the middle of what I believe to be one of Santiago's best escapes, Araucano Park. It's on the lower level and makes for a great stop if your spending the day lounging in the park or if you work nearby. Due to the subterranean location you don't really get the nature-lovers feel, but there are nice outdoor tables and the indoor decore is adequately Mexican. There's a stage and a DJ for 8:30 and later. Service - 3.5/5 I mean, nothing bad to say, but I hate having to flag down a server like I'm stranded on "get me another beer" island. The place was busy on a Thursday evening at 8:00, and TRUST ME I'm trying to judge by Chilean standards, but I really felt like I was trying to make myself conspicuous at this place, to no avail. Food - 3.0/5 The drinks dragged down this score. I ordered one of their happy our pisco sabrosos and it came out warm. Hard to forgive especially when the drink had the familiar sugar-burn of too much high fructose corn syrup, the likes of which are often found in cheap pre made cocktail mixes. The tacos were descent, with warm crispy flour tortillas, but the taste did not overly impress. The salad was descent enough, and I doc them no points because no one ever blows minds with a Cobb salad.
