Unfortunately, on March 30, my son was in a horrific accident. He was hit by a car while riding his bike in our hometown of Emerald Isle, North Carolina. He was subsequently airlifted to ECU, where he underwent emergency surgery, was in the hospital for four days, and is now in a cast up to his hip and not weight-bearing on the leg for at least two months. Obviously, due to these unexpected injuries, we must cancel our summer camp plans, as he will be in rehab to gain use of his right leg again. Therefore, I reached out to Camp Don Lee so that I could cancel our camp plans, and open up his spot to a child that may be on the waitlist. When I inquired about receiving a refund for my deposit was told that I needed to seek out and purchase third-party camp insurance prior to trying to cancel. However, had I called on 1 April, they would have 'possibly' been able to help. (We were in the hospital, and summer camp was the LAST thing on my mind.) The lack of compassion and empathy shown was absolutely disgraceful. Camp Don Lee touts itself as a small Christian camp, and even in the mission statement they double down on Christian values. My experience has been that they are only concerned with money, not the actual human experience. I told the woman to keep the deposit as a donation to camp as obviously they needed it more than we did. If you were looking for a place that treats your family with Christian values, empathy, and compassion I would choose to go elsewhere. Camp Kirkwood in Burgaw is a great alternate choice.

Our 14 year old son was excited to return for his third summer. The physical surrounds are awesome, a waterfront cabin, just rustic enough to feel like camp, but still comfortable. The well trained caring and slightly crazy staff members keep campers busy from swimming, boating, sailing, Gaga ball, four square, field games, nature hut, environmental education, sand volleyball, crafts, theme weeks, talent show, visiting the camp store, a small dose of God without pressure, hay rides, dances, camp fires, camp songs, crazy competitions, and more! Today's check in was smooth, actually pleasant. We had received several emails and telephone calls regarding his registration, policies and a reminder of the theme week--aloha campers! It's luau week st Camp Don Lee. I'd recommend this camp to all kids, Methodists or not. The website registration was easy to follow and with Bunk1 we can view pictures of our camper in action and send and receive emails. I absolutely love that no cell phones are allowed for campers. A whole week to unplug and experience this beautiful place!

It is clean, organized and overall a wonderful facility. ATB offers after school care directly across the street from Newport Elementary which is very convenient! During inclement weather, they have a van that transports the kids. Mrs. Debbie chooses her staff wisely and wants the best for the kids. Debbie and her staff have a fantastic setup, they truly care about the kids and they have a tremendous amount of activities for the kids to do while they are there. Our son asks to be picked up late some days because he has so much fun! Some of his favorite things are the Lego area, playing games, drawing at the drawing tables, playing Minecraft on the Xbox or racing on the Wii, or outdoor activities like basketball, smack ball, and four square. In addition to all of that, our son gets the majority of his homework done at ATB which is a huge help to our nightly routine. Because he is afforded the snack and quiet time after school, our evenings are peaceful. It is a win-win-win for parents to know their kids are safe, have a protective atmosphere, and have time for homework and socializing with their friends. During the summer, ATB also offers a structured and fun summer camp program including specific activities each day and two field trips a week. My son looks forward to seeing the calendar for the summer every year when it's published. All in all, this is a fantastic child care facility that has become a part of our family. We will truly miss it when our son ages out! We would encourage any family looking for after school care to visit Debbie and the facility. The pictures posted here are a true representation of what is offered but to see how clean and organized it is would be beneficial to a new family as well!
