We stop here every time we travel to Big Bend. Burritos are the best. Grab some tortillas to go!

I'm a Texan with a penchant for Tex-Mex (and Mex, New Mex and even Lou-Mex), and I enjoyed this…read morelittle joint. Was it the best ever? Hardly. But, in all fairness, I've eaten at no fewer than 200 different Tex-Mex restaurants in my lifetime. First, as one reviewer stated, this is very much a New Mexican-style restaurant, although they try to get there with the Tex-Mex. What does this mean? Quite simply, this place uses red sauce (vs. chili gravy) for enchiladas. It also offers stacked enchiladas with an egg placed on top, which is true New Mexican. Beyond that, the menu is quite varied. I'll start with my cheese enchiladas with red sauce. The sauce was spicy as hell, which was wonderful. The enchiladas themselves were a disappointment because they used two corn tortillas to roll them with the smallest pinch of cheese I've experienced in a while. -- I'm not sure about my dad's chile relleno and beef enchilada with green sauce, but he really enjoyed both. The rice and beans were pretty much par for the course. Not bad but nothing special. The salsa here is phenomenal. There's just enough onion and cilantro to make it memorable. It's served cold, which is a must for me, and it has some serious bite. Service here is really friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is old school: cheap paneling and trite "Mexican" decor. The men's bathroom is almost as dark as a movie theater. I don't get to this area often, but I would certainly eat here again any time I do.

It was a huge bowl that was nice and filling. Tacos and enchiladas were great, as were the beans and rice. We would come back through on another visit!

I decided to give this place a try. I was told they have good chicken fried steaks. The service was…read morequick and we went in about 5:15pm the place wasn't that busy. They did have specials but unfortunately they didn't honor them. We asked for two chicken fried steaks which were early bird specials Monday thru Friday. We also had the queso and chips with came with a side of salsa. The queso was nice and cheesy and the salsa had some nice heat to it. The chicken fried steaks were small and to thin, it was served upside down on a bed of white gravy. The plate came with a side salad and we ordered the mashed potatoes. The salad was fairly small in my opinion. The plate which should have been $10.99 ended up being $15. In this case the food was not worth the money. Portions are small. I did however liked the queso, salsa, chips and chicharrones are a nice touch. The sweet tea is really good.

I have been here many times. I have read the other reviews. I don't get it…read more This is an "old school wonderful" restaurant in Fort Stockton. The food is consistently great, period. It does not matter what I have, it is always tasty and prepared well. Today I had the shrimp and the other in my party had the chicken fried steak. Both dishes were prepared well and they tasted good. Are you looking for your plate to look like it was prepared by a French chef? This is not the place. Are you looking for good food at a fair price? This IS the place. The inside is old, yes...just like the rest of the buildings in the town. Lovely murals with Fort Stockton history are painted all over the inside--and they are freshly updated. Make sure your kids pick out all the road runners hidden in them. It's a Fort Stockton thing! Don't believe the naysayers...this is good food. This is good value. Service is usually good--but these days you get what you get. Be happy you have a server and that they are polite to you! A great stop off the highway--or at least it is for us all the time!

First -- and I rarely comment on other reviews -- there is nothing "weird" about the food here…read more Further, yes... This is a cash-only business. That's a rarity these days, and I'm sure the IRS and local school district are getting all that's due to them. (Not really.) I'm an out-of-towner, and I stopped here for lunch before heading back south. The food and service were good. Not great. Indeed everyone was friendly, and there was enough gooey cheese to float a battleship. The "frozen" beer mug was actually a plastic mug, which is horse hockey. If I'd known better, I would've saved the dishwasher some trouble and just sipped from the bottle. Back to the food... The cheese enchiladas here are divine. They're gooey, and the red sauce is wonderful. The hard corn tacos are fine ... nothing special. Same thing with the rice and beans. -- Mexican rice in these parts has been wet at every restaurant. I'm used to dry Mexican rice. (And I was taught by a Mexican abuela how to make proper Mexican rice.) But I digress. Chips here are marginal. Hopefully, they come in on a truck, because they hardly taste like they are fried in the kitchen. The salsa, while served cold (which is proper) is a little too chunky for my taste, although it has a nice bite to it. The locals eat here. Good for them, because this place is decent. But also bad for them, because restaurants like this one should breed some decent competition ... even in a tiny town such as Alpine. Also, bad for them because this place only accepts cash, which most people don't carry these days. (Yes, we had cash, but the six ladies at the adjacent table didn't.)

Very disappointing. My wife says we have eaten there before, but I dont remember. Service was OK…read more Wife had green chile chicken enchilada which was not very flavorful. The chicken had no flavor at all and the dish was very soupy. The server said "that's the way they serve it". That's fine, but wife couldnt eat it. The plate was barely eaten and the server offered no recourse. It was wasted. Then the cashier came over, whom I believe to be ownership, and told us we could come to the counter to check out. We showed her the uneaten plate and she just looked at us and said she would charge only 50%. Since it was barely touched, I feel it should have been totally removed from the bill, but what is $7.00 among friends. She really acted as she didnt care. Chips were store bought and cold. Salsa was very good, but was cold as if it had come straight from the refrigerator. I had a bowl of beans and they were "weird". We paid and left. Needless to say, we will not be back. I suppose it's the manner in which the whole situation was handled and the demeanor of the staff.
