My family and I come here every time we visit Michigan City. It's our favorite place to eat at in town. They always have great service, it's small but has plenty of seating inside and out. There is also a full bar, the food is always fresh and delicious and the portions are huge for the price. My favorite is the chicken shawarma bowl. It comes with red cabbage, Kalamata olives, pickles, tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, chickpeas, radishes and feta. The falafel and hummus are also delicious. I didn't think to take a picture until we already started eating but I took some to give an idea of the portions. read more

Thanks to Yelp we found this great lunch spot. Nestled into the downtown area of Michigan City. Very welcoming, super clean, with a full bar and several beers on tap. He served us ice water without even having to ask, which on a hot day was divine. The Gyro had a generous portion of gyro meat, plenty of fresh veges and tziki plus these perfectly cooked fries. SO good! My husband had the Shawarma chicken bowl and really enjoyed it. If we lived closer we'd probably come here regularly. read more

We've gotten Chickpea a few times and if you order in-store, you're fine but this is the second time they've messed up our carry out order. My husband even verbally confirmed what each bowl was supposed to have after someone said they hadn't received the (already paid for) order then found it a few minutes later miraculously. He drove round trip 25 minutes and we're just done at this point - they're clearly disorganized and the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. read more

A friend and I were spending the weekend in MC for a little girls weekend get away and decided to get lunch at Chickpea before hitting the road. We were expecting a fast casual palce based on some reviews and the photos online but it ended up being a sit down place. Our server was nice and attentive as we were the only ones there (we got there around 11). I ordered the Chicken Shwarma Wrap expecting it to be a good size and was shocked to see how large the portion was. I personally couldn't finish it but it was an early lunch for me. The chicken was a little dry but the flavors made up for it and the pickles packed a nice punch. The fries had a little sumac on them and were well cooked. Overall, the food was pretty good and a good value. If you are looking for medeterranian in the area it's worth swinging by. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. Foot was good. Tabouli salad was a lemony hit and I enjoyed the shawarma. Staff was attentive.

Food was ok, service was below average. I got a falafel bowl, nowhere on the menu says it comes feta cheese so be careful if you're vegan. I didn't want to waste food, so instead of returning the bowl I picked all the cheese. Good size of hummus, garlic sauce could be more garlicky and the falafel was good but needs more salt. The bowl to my surprise was cold, at least the rice should be warm... good amount of veggies. My husband had a chicken shawarma sandwich, it comes with fries which based on the taste and look they were made from scratch, not from frozen bag of fries. Food came out very quickly. The service was below average. Few teenage girls that acted like they don't want to do this job. Barely any word or enthusiasm during the process. It felt very weird. At one point I belive the owner came to ask if everything was OK so that was nice. Menu is a piece of paper straight from the printer with manually written corrections so that was weird too... Chickpea serves up generous portions of Mediterranean food. My chicken shawarma wrap was tasty; the chicken was nicely spiced although a bit dry, and the sauce, pickles, and veges added a good balance of flavors. The sumac fries that came with the wrap were great - I'm in general a fan of sumac on fries, and these ones were hot, fresh, and crispy. I was less impressed with the baba ghanouj appetizer. Good baba ghanouj has a nice smokiness to the flavor, but this one was was pretty bland. The service was welcoming and friendly. The decor inside is simple and unassuming; they do have a nice looking patio, but after a day on the beach we opted to sit inside in the A/C. read more

Charming little fast food that is anything but. Right next to the mall with convenient parking. Very cute decor. We called ahead and were assured our dietary restrictions could be accommodated. Having small picky eater toddlers we were little nervous but there was something for everyone on the menu. I loved it wasn't too complicated menu either so we could order and get settled right away. We ended up with the gyro bowl rice and gyro salad. I had the gyro salad and flavors were fresh. Hubs had the gyro rice bowl and he enjoyed it too. It was plenty for all kids. I wished I took pictures the presentation was so beautiful. The staff were very kind and made us feel welcome. We never needed to wait for anything someone was walking by but we never felt rushed. Perfect falafels with great flavor and texture. Strong hummus. Rest of the complementary sides fine. Chicken Shwarma Wrap - 3.5/5. Chicken is quite grilled to the point it has a little charred flavor I didn't love. Hard to eat but decent flavors when you get a bite of everything. Baba ghanousch - 3/5. Love this typically so got it as a side but was only OK. Eggplant was overly creamed so flavors melded together. Also ordered and paid for a baclava and pistachio cookie but didn't receive it . The gyro's were huge, overflowing with meat. It was enough for two sandwiches. They were very tasty and the meat was good quality, not overly fatty. There was a lot to like but also a few things that were a bit off. Those problems were small and understandable. The pop cooler was not working. When I mentioned it to the owner he apologized and said the repair guy refused to come in. The other issue was the temperature of the dining area. It was a bit colder than the pop. This place is over priced and the food is just okay. I got a falafel bowl with rice and went two minutes away to eat it and the rice was cold it felt hard. I called and told them and the person that answered said that because it had cold veggies on top it may be why it's cold. I told him it didn't taste good and he responded with *omg I will make sure it is not cold NEXT time" with an attitude at that. The bowl cost 16.50 not cheap at all. when I told him I will not be returning it was dead silent until I hung up. This is my second bad experience there Btw read more

I used to love it here. Now, you can't even get food. Service is non existent. Waited 45 min for a salad and walked out. Server was rude, only one there, said only one person cooking so completely understaffed just before the holiday. She should have apologized, brought some pita, something. I will never go again. Chickpea was incredible. I was so pleased with my experience there and I gotta say that I wish I lived closer because I will come more often. The place is small and from the looks of it you don't expect much. It is so great though. It has a "chipotle" kinda set up where you pick your dish and then you add your toppings. They take their time with the food and it is okay because the quality of it is top notch. Their falafels are incredible, their chicken kabobs were great, their sauces where home made and tasted great and alone. Everything was fresh and everything tasted so good. I also appreciated the welcoming attitude of the cooks. They engaged with you and provided so many samples. I need them to open up a place like this in Chicago and this mama would be a happy camper. There's something so frustrating when there is a very long line of customers waiting to be helped and there is one person that's behind the counter just sitting and watching the others work. If there is one suggestion for this biz, it would be to learn how to expedite the lunch time queue. There was one poor guy making all of the food, one guy would just fry up the falafel and assist with paying, and the other guy (seemed to be the owner) was just sitting and watching them. We ended up waiting in the line for a good 20 minutes as a result. No bueno. We also arrived when it was supposed to be open, and another customer told him that they would be ready in 10 minutes. Odd, but we made it work by stopping at the beach in the meantime. The menu is a little confusing (when it comes to what each option means), so I opted for the falafel rice bowl. You get to choose 3 toppings and a sauce. I got lettuce, cucumber, and tomato; it came with three pieces of pita. Honestly, the portions are small. I feel like I got 3 pieces of cut cucumber and 2 slices of tomato and a baby pinch of lettuce. It was a bit underwhelming, but the falafel and rice were delicious. I also tried the orange blossom lemonade - very refreshing and perfect for a hot, summery day. They also have a tiny bar inside that serves all types of liquors and local craft brews. I circled around torn between three nearby shops , and Chickpea was the best. The heat was getting to me and though usually prefer alfresco the air conditioned interior was perfect, the orange blossom lemonade delightful and my salad and sandwich scrumptious. The new hues of the interior more calming and a team of young firefighters proved Chickpea a favorite for locals and mine too. read more

Chickpea recently opened back up with a new owner, a new menu, and higher prices. I ordered the falafel pocket and it was excellent. The falafel were crispy, and all of the ingredients were fresh. The dish was served with a side salad as well. There was light music, playing in the background, and the table fixtures were quite basic. The lemonade was supposed to have come with refills, but the server never returned to the table. Since the place is newly opened, they have a few bugs to iron out, but this may turn out to be a very nice spot again. read more

I came the other day as I was passing through from Illinois back home. I had scoped this place out in advance and thought it would be a perfect stopping point for lunch. I got the falafel bowl and it was very tasty and plentiful. There were tons of veggies to add to the bowl, which I love! I am deducting a star because I wish it was cleaner there. The food prep area appeared clean, which is a deal breaker. But the building and outdoor eating area not so much. They need to do a better job at cleaning the entire property. We loved this place! The food and atmosphere was perfect. The service was friendly. I had the chicken shawarma which was flavorful with a nice grilled taste. The pita bread is large and is like a wrap instead of a pocket. It came with an olive oil lemon sauce but I also added the traditional tzatziki sauce to it. We also tried the falafel pita which was huge and delicious. My husband enjoyed his gyro. The fries are perfection with a little seasoning that is just enough pizazz that's not too overpowering. The fries come with a white sauce for dipping that I really enjoyed but the rest of the family preferred not to use it. Lastly, we tried the orange blossom lemonade which was fresh tasting with a floral bite. We liked it. I recommend this place as everything is made fresh to order. read more
