Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a…read morebarn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem.

Down an unassuming, urban road, you'll find a fairly dated, but neatly kept restaurant in what…read morelooks like a renovated old fast food joint. And the food was fast, but definitely not fast food. Once inside, the pride the owner takes in her business is as evident as the friendly service that makes you feel like grandma must be the one cooking in the kitchen. This restaurant is truly a diamond in the rough. We chose it based on the current Yelp review of a 4.9, and after our experience I'm truly questioning the sanity of whoever gave her the line score below a 5. Dated building aside, the rest of the ambiance was neat, clean, and at the time of our visit, quiet. However, we arrived very near closing time on a Wednesday, so I imagine it's much more lively at peak hours. My husband and I both ordered the whiting fish plate with turnips and Mac N cheese. Two giant fillets of piping hot fish came our way in no time, perfectly seasoned with the best crunch imaginable, yet not overly greasy. The turnips, likewise, deliciously seasoned along with Mac N cheese of the variety you would expect if grandma was, indeed, in the kitchen. So, if you're ever in Rocky Mount, seeking the best fare the town has to offer, stop by Mama Sarah's. It's worth your while.

However, I was greeted by the courteous daughter-in-law of Mama Sarah. Fried catfish was great, onion rings too. No complaints here.

I don't usually mention other people's reviews when doing my own reviews but when you write a…read morereview based on what the wait staff looks like or the fact that the two plates you ordered were obviously switched (probably by accident) or even basing the portions of this restaurant to another restaurant that you frequent, then in my opinion, your review isn't worth considering and honestly should be removed. As for me, I love seafood and I have eaten at many seafood restaurants in different states and though I can only say I eat at this particular restaurant about three times a year it's by far one of my favorites. The portions are fair for the price and for most people, it is enough or even more than enough. I see about 60-70% of patrons taking a to go box of left overs out every time I go here. I have never in 20+ years of eating at this restaurant had a complaint about any of the wait staff. I do have a concern for the size of potatoes or sweet potatoes. They have definitely shrunk over the years and now aren't worthy of putting on a plate. The grilled chicken breast has also gotten smaller but I see that happening at most restaurants not just here. Everything I have ever received here has been delicious and everyone has always been nice and courteous. Madison isn't known for their restaurants and don't have a whole lot to chose from but Mayflower should be at the top of the list if your ever in the area and hungry. One more tidbit that I'd like to add. Out of all the Mayflowers that I have been to, this one is the best!
