The bathrooms were clean; the park itself was clean and free of lose trash and debris; there were plenty of benches to enjoy the scenery and to relax; and paved walk ways to take a leisure stroll and enjoy the tree-lined Olympia Fields streets. The park is large enough to not feel like people in various areas are to close or infringing on your space. There is also a covered picnic shelter which is good if you want to rent the park for family events and such. I also like the wide flat area so that you can let the kids run free or you could have structured games for your events. It's definitely one of the better parks in Olympia Fields.

The south portion runs up to 90th Street and partially - on the east side - over to about 91st Street. Either way you are in for a treat. This expansive park has loads of room to spread out, whether a summer picnic group or a small family gathering with a cookout. In fact, during the pandemic, just visiting and sitting in the parking lot with your friends in lawn chairs is a way to keep active socially. Overall, the poor customer service and uncomfortable conditions made for a disappointing experience. There was no concern to our comfort in addition to the rude responses from the staff. Dunbar Park has a good amount of athletic features. Picnic groves are also a popular reason to come here. There's also an interactive water feature popular in summers. Around the time of World War I, the Douglas community became densely populated by African-Americans. It was an elegant neighborhood full of mansions. These mansions were divided up into apartments to house these new residents. It was a pretty rough area in the Great Depression. The area was revitalized in 1956 with the opening of Paul Dunbar High School. A few years later this park opened next to it. These are named after the famous African-American author, one of the first who was critically successful. He didn't live for long, but he still was able to put lots of work out.
