My husband loves Chicago hotdogs and was so excited this stand was directly across our hotel. We literally walked across and got 2 Chicago dogs and 1 frito pie. He said the hot dogs were legit. I expected a frito bag with chili poured into it and a fork. But it was in a container. I also got "Christmas" chili which is red and green peppers. I had them hold the cheese but added onions. It was steamy and delicious which hit the spot because it was pretty chilly in Santa Fe at high noon if you weren't in the sun. I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and you'd think it would be easy to find a hot dog there. Big city, right? Should be a simple request. So, the first time I visited Santa Fe, about 15 years ago, I was happy to stop by the Chicago Dog Express while waiting for my hotel room to be ready. Now, as a resident of Santa Fe, I am still happy to be able to go to this cute little place and sit outdoors and enjoy one of life's simple pleasures -- a hot dog! The Chicago Dog is my fave, and the name of this place shows that is definitely their focus. Everything about it is perfect -- the combination of peppers, pickle and mustard. It's the perfect dog, and 1/2 loaded does the trick, although you can get a fully loaded version which is twice the amount of toppings. This place is a sit outside or take with you, and it's a great lunch location right downtown Santa Fe. So the next tiime you are in Santa Fe and looking for a hot dog, or just a quick lunch with lots of yummy goodness, stop by here! I used to joke that I had to get out of DFW to find a good hot dog, so I would drive almost 10 hours for the pleasure. Hotdog lovers, imagine a perfectly cooked VB hot dog that almost sounds like an elastic band as it cracks between your teeth..; now, splattered with pickles, sport peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and mustard bursting in your mouth with every bite; now, nestled on a poppyseed bun. Two reasons you should not waste your time visiting this place. 1. Hot dogs are the farthest thing from actual Chicago dogs and overpriced for what you're getting.The vegetables put on the hot dogs are not fresh. It is a shame that this place claims the name "Chicago" yet doesn't match the same quality in product or service (The staff is not from Chicago and this not an authentic business). I would not advise eating here as it will ruin your experience with Chicago dogs. 2. Staff are extremely unprofessional and still demand that customers wear masks while ordering OUTSIDE (if you don't have a mask they offer to sell you one for $1). This establishment is completely outside and if you're vaccinated you do not have to wear a mask outside per CDC guidelines. I understand that a business can refuse service/ have a mask rule. But the fact that INDOOR restaurants in the same area allow customers to not wear masks if vaccinated shows how unreasonable this rule is. This business should update their policy on masks with respect to vaccinations as most businesses throughout the country have and treat people with respect. The hot dogs miss the mark for being Chicago dogs, are overpriced, and if you believe in people treating others with respect I would encourage you to stand up and not support an establishment that treats people terribly and has no rational basis for requiring people to wear masks outside. Stopped here yesterday after craving a good dawg for a few weeks. Could have cooked one at home, but we know dawgs always taste better when prepared by someone else. Why is that? A dog gone conspiracy? Anyway, we both had the Santa Fe Dog - I had mine with red Chile only and my bf had his Christmas style. Just to note: I absolutely love their Chicago style with polish sausage dog: my favorite of all times. And, I have been going to this place at least for 20 years, always ordering the same thing: a Chicago with Polish Sausage. The last two out of three times I've gone however, their memory seems to lapse from the counter to the three feet it takes to prepare the dog-- they give me a beef hot dog. And today when I ordered, I even confirmed with the order taker: "this is polish sausage, right?" She says: "yes, of course." So, I went back to my car to eat it since their tables are currently closed to the public, opened it up and it was beef hot dog. Damn it! What's sad is that given the COVID situation, we don't go out at all hardly to eat, and I really wanted a good Chicago Polish Sausage dog. I was thoroughly glad to see this little shack across from my hotel and had to stop over. The staff, 3 women probably in the 20s, was super friendly. The have beef dogs, polish dogs, Frito pie, but also turkey dogs. I was recommended Chicago dog, which I took.
