The Chicago Barn Dance Company hosts Monday night dances that rotate around the city, usually to Bethany Church, Abbey Pub or Space up in Evanston. The dance style is such that all levels can dance together; it starts off with people pairing into couples (one "lady" one "gent" though sex doesn't matter) and arranging themselves into a line (contra) or a square (or something altogether different if the caller is spunky!) Then, you practice. Once, twice, you get the idea down and everyone starts chomping at the bit. The musicians are stomping their feet, you are stomping your feet, and the caller finally says, "Readyy, GO!"
Suddenly, you are dancing. It is like you took a 5 minute class and now you can spin, swing, and move like a pro! Sure, you'll crash into someone, step on a toe, and maybe lose your partner for a beat or two, but everyone is so friendly and accomodating that you will get right back into the groove.
I warn you, you are going to burn through about 600 calories if you stay the night. You will sweat (bring an extra shirt, men, it is courtesy for the ladies) and you will laugh. It is a loose environment and not pigeonholed to country-lovers or old people. There are genuine folk-dancers, country singers, and senior citzens stomping their feet (often very, VERY well!) alongside young people, punk rockers, and more.
If you want to enjoy yourself and are ready to let yourself go a little, give it a try. You'll be surprised how fun it is! read more
