Chic Studios NYC was extremely accommodating with my busy work schedule. They even provided their current students with complimentary virtual trainings during the COVID-19 emergency when NYC was shut down. The teachers are super knowledgeable and make you feel comfortable in class. I was intimidated to go to make-up school, but they have made me feel like part of the family. I still have to complete my training when school is back in session, but so far I am very impressed with my education and look forward to practicing the techniques I have learned. First off, I really wanted to like the intensive class that I completed at Chic Studios in early 2022, however there were so many areas of improvement for the course, specifically dealing with course content, instructor quality and general safety and cleanliness protocol, that I cannot in good conscience give this studio a favorable review. Course Content- there was absolutely no structure to this class. It seemed to be run by whatever the instructor felt like talking about at that time. There should be some handouts or a general syllabus that students should be able to follow and ask questions about. Instead, what we received we rambling rants and no take home materials to study. For examples, a conversation about different facial and eye shapes included pointing to different students in the class or the instructor looking up celebs on his phone and waving the screen at us from the head of the classroom. For the cost of the course, there should have been some type of printed materials or posters in the classroom to use as a reference. As far as different makeup brushes needed to be used to achieve a specific look, the instructor would take a brush, say its name, use it on a model and then say..."See what I just did?". No, this was a beginner's class, he should have led with showing us how to hold a brush to achieve a specific application, which brush should be used to achieve different effects and explain why rather that saying "I just know how to pick a brush from experience". We are taking a class to learn so detailed explanations are needed. Instructor- The instructor spent a lot of time dancing to his own mixtape in class and going off on tangents about his life story and his experience in the makeup industry. It became very distracting...and awkward. Quite a few topics that we were supposed to cover, according to the online course description, we didn't get a chance to review because we ran out of time due to his meanderings and not having a standard syllabus or set topics to discuss. Cleanliness- Covid protocols should have been adhered to at all times during the session. The instructor almost never had a mask on and there was an expectation that the students would have to serve as models, without a mask, for each other to practice makeup application. If that was the case, then it should have been noted in the class description before we signed up. Not everyone feels comfortable standing very close to someone else's face, having someone in their space or serving as a model. Overall, I feel the content that was covered was very elementary. Nothing that you couldn't look up and find using YouTube. I do not plan on taking any more classes there Response to Amy's comment: Hello Amy, you know this review is true. I wonder if you actually read it. 1. This was a review of a course at CHIC NYC. From my understanding, you are mainly based in LA. You weren't there in the class. You may very well be in the office in March wearing a mask, as stated in the first line of my review, this occurred in January 2022. 2. I discussed Covid-related protocols in the classroom. This has nothing to do with a professional cleaner that comes weekly or whether the kits were new. The instructor DID NOT adhere to social distancing guidelines, he didn't wear a mask and we were expected to serve as models for the other students in the classroom even though that was not included in the class description. I have learn so many things in here that I didn't not from basics to professional makeup tips, the teachers are amazing, have their unique way of teaching which allows you to have different techniques under your sleeves and the classmates that I have are the best. I'm a recent CHIC grad of January'14- and I must say I loved my experience. The instructors are amazing (especially the night instructor Ruthie) and yes the classes are all day but you really don't feel the time pass by. The teach you well beyond the basics of applying makeup to clients- I learned things like set etiquette at a fashion show, how to network and set up my own business along with bridal makeup, ethnic makeup, time period makeup and more. A pretty large kit (much of with I use on my clients to this day) is included in the tuition, although they welcome you to add your own products. My favorite thing about CHIC is that your relationship with the school doesn't end come graduation- CHIC grads are given the opportunity do a plethora of gigs and workshop ! read more

The reason to go to this school are the instructors. Professional. Helpful. Hands on. Especially Anjelica. She was so great. Taught me so much with 0 experience. You can ask her any question. She is so knowledgeable and genuinely cares, and is a working makeup artist. Only bad thing about chic is the kit. It is pretty bad. Took 3 weeks (of a 6 week course) to get the full kit. Makeup in it is a mix of nice things like MAC, and garbage. I literally threw away. The discrepancy between the classes is huge. Other classes received products triple the size. And way more Stuff. Come on Chic. At least make the kit standard. My friend recommends chic and her kit had 2x the stuff. Overall, this school is as good as its instructors. You will get a decent education. They make or break it. One other thing i found weird was chic made a big deal about offering coffee and water and WiFi. Pretty much every day the water was empty. No coffee. No cups. There is no sink. Never give a WiFi password. Don't advertise this stuff then when someone is paying $4000. There were also multiple days of no cotton rounds, no paper towels, no towels, no q tips. Hmmmm. Overall the instructors are great, and the kit is infuriating. Why did i get my kit halfway through? Also there is a checklist that comes wit the kit, and we were told to cross things off the checklist we weren't getting. Now that I look back on that really? And to see the other class have those items is ridiculous. read more

This school is one of the worst schools they have for make up do not believe the hype they take your money they get locked out of class the first day. My daughter-in-law had to pass around Makeup the second day they got locked out of class the third day it was just a mess she requested a refund they said being that they gave her a pallet that wasn't even $200 and she had to pay $2000 for this class. They don't want to give her a refund I am reporting this business. It is the worst. This is not the first Young lady they've done this to. They are just a rip off. They do not answer no phones they do not get back to you or anything someone text you on line and everything but that's the further the goes. This school is just a rip off they are ripping young ladies off without any consequences . DO NOT ENROLL HERE! Scammed my partner out of $4,000 after she unenrolled from their school due to an emergency. She requested her refund in November and it is now March. They refused to provide any documentation that the refund is being processed or on the way but keep giving false deadlines of when the refund "should" be deposited but it never comes. They also just attempted to send an echeck via PayPal and their bank declined their payment. This place has NO money to refund you after you pay. They will NOT refund you. read more

I booked a Portfolio Shooting. My first model was 1hr late. Both models were by far not professional - they had no clue how to behave in front of the camera and also did not have the face, the skin and the look of a model. The photographer was even too lazy to stand up from his chair to take the pictures. I cannot use any of the pictures and paid USD 250 (excl. retouch). Really bad experience! read more

I went there twice for an open house, and I definitely would not spend any money here. I had one of the ladies do some winged eyeliner on me and it looked absolutely terrible. I wiped it off shortly after. I was there recently and had two women do my eyebrows and some eyeshadow, which both turned out horrible as well. This is alarming for such an expensive school to have women that don't seem to really know what they're doing. The eyeshadow looked like chalk on my eyelids and my eyebrows looked like unnatural and unappealing boxes on my face. I was not impressed. I attended Chic Studios NYC 3 years ago. Back then it was located in Dumbo, Brooklyn, great location! I did 4 weeks basic course with Angelique and 2 day air brush course with Johny. First, I though price was great. Honestly, it was a bargain. The course included color theory, sanitation, basic makeup application, bridal makeup, lots of hands on practice, and also advice about looking for a job and beauty business. At the end of the course, we did a photo shoot and got some great images for our portfolio. Angelique was great, patient, friendly, knowledgable and inspiring. Johny was great too, he compliments his students, it was great to hear positive feedback. And Christina, sooo friendly and helpful! After completing the course, all the students are included in Chic Studios community which I love! They email you job offers, events ... etc. I have a cosmetology license and did some makeup already, I'm confident with hair but didn't feel confident enough to call myself makeup artist yet. After 4 weeks at Chic Studios, I was totally ready to be paid for my makeup skills. And actually, I got my first paid makeup job on the independent movie set while I was still at Chic Studios. Chic Studios makeup kit was more than enough for that job. I started to offer makeup to my hair clients straight away and made the money I spent on school back in no time. Chic Studios is a great investment in yourself, in your career, whether you are a beginner, or more advanced, it will give you confidence to go out there and start making money as a makeup artist. My experience at Chic studios was nothing less than AMAZING. I had the joy of having the lovely Angelique as my head instructor for the 4 week course. She was so patient and informative without ever being boring or seeming as we annoyed her. Even when struggling through the "ugly stage" she's super helpful. Our sexy Chola Ruthie is great at demonstrating different techniques as well as seeing our futures. She really took the time to address which areas we excel in and what field may better suit us. That really made an impact on me that she took time to really think this out. Many schools just want to pump out students but at Chic they really care about our careers and future. Christina is like the absolute best "principal" ever. She's there always impeccably dressed n her office always ready with a smile and an answer to any question we should have. So great. Let's not forget about the fabulous men of Chic who are freaking amazing makeup artist and demonstrated so many different techniques and perspectives on makeup that I felt ready to go and karate chop a chick with cream blush contour for the gods and create a pop princess from a video I've just watched. Overall my experience at Chic was marvelous. I would do it a million times over if I could. They were all oh so helpful and insightful. * Before you apply, please read my experience. * I have never had a chance to attend any of the classes so this review is not about my in class experience. It's about their costumer services and their continues lies about my refund. I really wanted to complete their Professional Make up Course as I thought it could be a great start for my make up career as I am from Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my course almost 2 weeks prior the start date, however, I have already paid the entire tuition fee. On their website it is very clearly written that they provide full refund, except 100$ non refundable fee. I was very happy as I am able to get back my money as I got into a position where I really had to collect all of my money. For me 3525 $ is a very serious amount of money. I have reached out the school first via mail on the 29th of January (course started 11th of February) and I was ignored for an entire week!!! I have tried via phone but the lady on the line said: she is not sure if they provide refund - regardless that it is stated in their policies. After several mail conversation finally I got approved on the 4th of February and they said it should take 16-20 business days to get my refund. Well, today it's 9th of April and I still haven't got my money back. I am trying every week to reach out the school but I am getting the same answer. As I am not a US citizen I am so sad and frustrated that I will never have that money back as it would cost for me more to pay a lawyer to get my money back. Please be smart when you make such a decision specially if this tuition fees make a big different for you as well. read more
