Just get a job as a helper/ apprentice, you'll learn this stuff in the field. It feels like there is too much to go over in just 5 weeks per segment ( 6 segments total ) I was in H-VAC and the first 3 teachers weren't even good. Segment 2 and 3 teachers had attitude problems and loved being smart asses while the first one was a nice man but half of what he taught the other teachers said isn't even needed information. You're basically paying $19,000 to learn shit you can GET PAID to learn on an actual job. I can't talk an other trades in this school but don't bother with H-VAC. Any 5 star reviews you see here are 100% fake and made by a school staff or whatever just to get you to throw 19K at them to waste your time. No you don't NEED this certification the school gives you at graduation to get a job as a helper/ apprentice. You'll get whatever licenses and certifications you need while in the field. Also for 19K the school almost never feels prepared with equipment in the class. Let me just start off by saying I cannot say anything right now currently about their curriculum.I graduated in nineteen ninety three when I went there at that time wasn't the greatest place. The issue that I am reviewing is I was up for a pretty prestigious job and of course, they get a background check, well, they contacted the school three times three times nobody got back to them so I had to scramble in order to prove that I went to school there. I did contact somebody trying to get a hold of my transcript and another copy of my certificate.I was on the phone with them.Got disconnected called back, never got a return call. I have contacted the school now. Three times trying to get an administrator so I could speak to them to let them know what happened and how unprofessional it is. Mind you when I went to school there. Originally, I lived in new jersey so I never got any lifetime job placement assistance.Because they never had any jobs in new jersey.Then I moved away a year later. Can't understand why it's so difficult to speak to somebody. They don't verify that I went to school there. I cannot get a copy of my Transcript and nobody returns your call. I understand I went there a long time ago, but looking at the. Reviews I can't see that this place has changed any from the early nineties. My stepson recently graduated from Apex and it has been a true blessing. He chose the welding program and Mr. Kenny helped guide him throughout. He was just recently hired at a great company and his future is looking bright! So I graduated years ago when I was a delinquent and figured I should learn something useful for when I finally got my priorities in order. I ended up making a 7 month full time course last almost two years because of my lack of commitment. Regardless the class was passed and I got the certification in the refrigeration course study. Fast forward about ten years plus later and guess what, I would have to say it was a pivotal moment to have had made that decision. I just recently learned that the school had relocated to queens and when visiting my family back east, I stopped by with a cousin to introduce to him a possibility for continuing education. Havnt heard from him since though. To each his own, it's not for everyone. Regardless my single valuable piece of advice is; have a plan of action layed out even if it's not the best plan ever, just get something done that is relevant to whatever peaks interest. At the time when first enrolling I had plans of controlling indoor climate for the sole purpose of hydroponic indoor growing, but coupled with my wreckless attitude and irresponsibility it hasn't happened yet. Even though my grand plan hasn't materialized, I can say that the good news is that with the foundation of basic knowledge from Apex, I've been able to solidify my position in the HVAC industry. As a licensed contractor holding various certification with multiple organizations, it has set me apart from many others and now demonstrates without question my credibility and competency. The training plays a substantial part in personal growth. More so is the desire to surpass any limiting beliefs. Current student in Plumbing and Pipefitting. The instructors are good, many have been in their field of trade for decades and know what they're doing and are helpful. The general tuition is $18,000. The instructors and administration don't really talk to each other and it causes problems with material funding and instructors for classes. Some leave and it takes a while for them to find a new one. One segment I had three different instructors. read more

Re-posted: I attended an electronics-training program and also a computer-repair program back in the mid and late 1990s. These were in LaGuardia Community College, and New York City Technical College. Sometime back in 2011 (when Apex was still in Manhattan) i decided to look for information just to see what it is like. As a female who trained in a male-dominated field, I tend to be on the lookout for how schools like Apex are run. Do they have anti-sexual harassment policies? Is the classroom environment conducive to learning? Since there are always fewer female students in such schools, does the school take female students less seriously? (etc). I was only looking for some pamphlets that I could see from outside through the open doors. Like one other comment here says, there were a lot of ghetto guys outside hanging out and saying crude things to passers-by especially women, and I am sure that they are proud to be ex-cons and future ex-cons. However when I stepped inside to get some pamphlets, the people at the desk insisted that I just meet with one of the main administrators ( I think the director) even though I just wanted to get the reading material. A late 50ish looking black man came to me and had me go to his office and he asked me what course I would be interested in. I explained that I did not come to talk with him, but the persons at the desk told me that I should. so I went on to tell him that I already studied electronics and computer repair at certain colleges, so electronics would be best. He explained the electronics course. he said that the course costs some $17,000 and only provides a certificate after completion and to get a licence as a electrician it takes about 7 or more years of work in the field and the course does not provide any kind of licence but prepares the student to go on and work in electronics so as to get the licence but even without the licence good paying jobs in electronics are possible. I asked if the school provides placement. The staff member said yes. I asked about the success rate of placing students, and whether the school has some kind of contract or agreement with the businesses or companies that hire their students so as to provide employment to the students of the school after they graduate. I told him that as a female I have to ask questions regarding discrimination of females in non traditional work because when I went to the electronics training program that I graduated from years back, I was instructed on what to expect in hiring practices of companies and it is common that companies prefer male electrical workers. I asked him if the school is more successful in placing men rather than women students in jobs in electronics. I asked if there is an equal number of male and female students or if there is an imbalance. I asked if the companies that the school sends its graduates to have a preference for male rather than female workers. I asked about whether the school has a policy against sexual harassment. The guy said that it is not a good way to judge the efficiency of the school by considering whether women students find jobs as much as male students do because to begin with, there are more male students, and the classes tend to be some 95 percent male, and men find jobs more often because there are more of them to go into the field of electronics but female students do very well in APEX school and have found employment. He said that if any company has a prejudice against women and prefers male workers, then he would not bother to have that company be a client of the school. He also said that the teachers of the school treat each student with respect whether the student is male or female but as far as the students whom behave badly in front of the building , the staff of the school cannot control all students all the time, and what those particular male students do on their break outside the building is just a matter of them "being themselves." (Anyone see cop-out types of answers?) I took the folder of information that the staff member gave me. I thanked him and left the cubicle. I could tell that he regretted that I stopped by to find out about the school. I know that I am not the kind of student that the school would want. I ask the wrong questions as far as they are concerned. They want people whom will just enroll and pay the tuition and not complain. All you people out there, ask tough questions when you go to check out any vocational school . Don't go to a school like APEX that has such a prevalence of these kinds of students. You are not likely to learn in the classroom and you will have pay a lot for a poor education. read more

my experience in this school was not the experience i hoped it would be. i recently graduated from the electrical program and i couldn't be more relieved to get the hell outa there. firstly some of the staff in this school are not professional at all and don't give a damn about your education. i recall some days going to class and not being given any assignments so i would have to just sit there all day on my phone. additionally i had some teachers who weren't able to control their students in which i felt bad for them. however i did have some teachers who were good. Mrs Susan is very short tempered she would give me attitude and yell at me for no reason and would tell me that she would expel me from the school when i did nothing wrong and accuse me of lying to her which was not true. she would make a simple task become so much bigger than it should be. also the school is always on you if you don't make your monthly payments which is funny because they didn't contact me regarding if i was coming back to school after their school was ready to open again because of covid. i had to call them multiple times in which they would always tell me to call back another day or tell me they would call me back which they never did. The school also has a lot of equipment is that is worn down and broken you would think they would have material that was in good shape for shop considering how much money students pay the school. For people thinking of enrolling into this school really think twice before coming here for your own sake. i would recommend anyone looking to get into the electrical trade look at other schools which hopefully provide better education. laguardia community college has a electrical training program and they provide the same teaching material as apex but at a significantly lower cost. as well as the osha 30 and your certificate upon completion. if i had known about their program i for sure wouldn't have enrolled in apex. im just trying to look out for anyone thinking of coming here and give my honest experience at this school. read more

I do not recommend this school towards anyone. They are low on staff and usually select the boring teachers to teach you several segments when they need to switch up the teachers every segment. Then they want to get mad at you for missing hours when they set up the entire curriculum in a way that will make you loose interest in the trade you signed up for. The worst part is they have horrible deadlines to make up hours you have missed. It is not realistic seeing a lot of us have lives busy beyond what the staff could ever imagine! Makes me, a student, want to sue. Last but not least, there are only two schedules to choose from. Morning (8am-2:10pm) and Night (6pm-10pm). Another horrible aspect of this school. There has to be an afternoon course available for those who cannot come in at 8am and cannot stay until 10pm. Most training at this school is for residential rather than commercial. We learn about some commercial terms in books that we never get to experience physically within the school. This is a waste of tuition. I would recommend any other school. Side Note: They have a teacher who sent a nude photo to a student "by accident". He still works there. read more

Why would you review a place that you've never been to/don't know anything about? I went here with Man Friend for orientation/meeting with an admissions counselor. Admissions counselor was really friendly, great with follow-ups, and knowledgeable about other trade schools within the tri-state area. The interior is drab, not much to look at but the staff are quick to assist you and well-informed which can't be said for much of the CUNY system. If you're looking into trade schools, Apex is one of the few that have welding technology within the NYC area. They encourage you to meet with an admissions counselor, then financial aid to see whether or not you qualify. Definitely look into Apex if you're looking at trade schools. read more

I see a lot of negative reviews in the comments here about the staff and the students and I just wanted to say that it's not that bad. I just graduated from here a few days ago and honestly this school was one of the best experiences of my life. Some of the teachers may be kind of boring like the reviews make them out to be but I'm not there to be entertained I'm there to learn. And besides that I can honestly say that majority of the teachers I had in the electrical program we're really into their jobs and taught me well. Some of them even went beyond their curriculum and taught me things that they didn't have to but did it because they saw the determination in their students to have a successful career in the future. One of the teachers literally sat us down individually and asked each one of us what we wanted to do after leaving the school and gave us pointers on what we should be doing once we graduated for our own personal journeys. I feel like people will be discouraged by the way the teachers speak to their students and don't coddle their students, but I assure you when you leave that school your jobs are gonna treat you the same way you're being treated there nobody's gonna hold your hand you have to handle things yourself and if you can't handle that then maybe this isn't the profession for you but people should learn to take responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming the school for being "boring" and for the way their peers conduct themselves. I've been to college and I've been to apex and I leaned way more vital information in apex that actually pertained to what I signed up for instead of college which gave me classes in things that had nothing to do with what I went to school for. I went to orientation and tour guide was telling us about school. He took us around and the first thing I noticed was the school was really ghetto , and then I noticed how much weed was being smoked in there! The whole school smell like weed and to pay $20,000 to go there and breath in weed all day for 7 months is crazy. I asked the tour guide about the weed, and he said "he didn't notice it, and that there isn't anything wrong with weed ( what about working with machines and welding equipment while high as a kite ). He also said if I had some I should give him some..." A fight almost broke out in front of the school as well as i was leaving so glad I didn't sign anything. I went to Apex for Air Conditioning, 20 years ago, so it may not be relevant today. But, then again it probably does. Back then, everyone complained how everything sucks, and you'll get no job, the school prepares you for nothing, and so on. The reality is that the majority of people that went there are on some sort of ex-con program, recovering addict program or just simple low lives looking for an "easy way out". They may know how to put peeling tint on a window and polish their rims, but most have little, to no mechanical ability. (This helps a lot! ). Most don't pay for the school, or get a super reduction in price from some ghetto grant. The few that actually do paid, and even those with no mechanical ability, seem to work on studying and trying to make something of themselves. Which is always a great thing to see. The school goes through the process of cramming your brain with theory. Which is a good thing. It lays down the foundation of understanding why, not just how to fix an A/C. Many times, it is theory that gets me through a problem. The school does teach some practical things, that are important. The tools and equipment are shit, but if you can work with shit, on shit then you are ahead of the game. Your first job out of Apex will be a shit job. You will work on unpleasant equipment, in unpleasant areas, in some rat infested basement. :) But at least the $$$ matches the job. My first job from Apex, i was making $7 an hour. I was quite devastated. But, I spent my time studying how things worked, on my rides home on the subway. I make 10x that now. I still open my text book for reference. In the industry, there are shit loads of process mechanics. They follow a recipe on how to fix an item, then go through the check list, until they hit the problem. This works for 75% of the problems. And that's why they sort of keep their jobs. They can smoke there stuff, get drunk, party and screw up their lives to there hearts content. And have a job Monday. But they are the first to get laid off, and the first to get outraged. This industry should be called A/C & R and electric controls. Controls, electronic or otherwise is the most important and lucrative part of the industry. It requires clear, logical thinking. Those who embrace controls make the most $$$ The most important thing is to show up everyday, do the job the best you can, and resolve the excuses for not doing well. Apex is there to sell you a product, called an education. Even though your employer will not take Apex too seriously (no it is not equal to 2years), you need to take it seriously, for your own future. read more

This will be my first review on yelp. The main reason I created it was in the hopes of helping out people that are in the same shoes I was about a year ago. I was extremely indecisive on what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I wanted to do something. I had a friend who went job corps and studied electrical. He ended up graduating and getting a $20/h job with Amtrak and after much thought I decided I wanted to pursue the same thing. I started the day program of electrical at Apex in January and graduated in August. These are the following awards you can receive at Apex: 1)Perfect attendance award (be on time every day and arrive every day) 2) Top tech award (have perfect attendance and also receive higher than 90 in shop and theory) 3) Special commendation award (apex technical will recommend you as a trustworthy and punctual employee). I graduated with both perfect attendance and special commendation award. After graduating I spent a little more than a month looking for jobs, I rejected a few because they offered too little of pay. After a month or so I landed a job with a contractor making $13/h. After 90 days they will give me a raise though. Let me advice that this field is not for the lazy or the non-punctual type of person. It's hard work and does take dedication. But the knowledge is very rewarding. And on the contrary to what I just said this field is very diverse. If you get into low voltage jobs the work load will be much easier. I'm doing industrial/commercial work which is most of the time hard work and no day is ever the same...I love that. Once I get into my zone of working and getting busy the day just flies by. Now let me fill you in a little at the education that comes from Apex. The course is divided into 6 segments. Through out the course you will have 1 day theory and the next day shop. As far as the teachers I can almost guarantee you that you will be taught with one that isn't completely fluent in English. Most teachers are great and knowledgeable, but I dealt with 1 or two where I had to basically self teach myself through the book they gave us. The student body isn't Yale. I'll finish off by saying that you will get out of this what you put in. There are a few student that I graduated with still looking for jobs. If you can get into the field without having to go to trade school then I would definitely recommend that. It's somewhat hard to get your foot in the door without some type of background. Also just be aware that the classes have a lot of broken equipment and sometimes it's hard to do you're projects how you would want to. Regardless I ended up getting a job from my experience here. If you're ambitious and have good work ethic you'll be fine. I can only speak on the plumbing teachers and the plumbing course I took. I can first hand tell you that i wish i never came to this place. A teacher by the name of Mr B like to sleep in class while he is suppose to be teaching. When he first started to teach he was good. As time went by,like other teachers I had, he got lazy and spent the majority of the segment sleeping. A teacher by the name of Mr Su is an alcoholic. Drinks in the classroom in front of student and other teachers. Principal called him on it but principal is also good friends with him. This man is a carpentry teacher but is teaching plumbing. A teacher by the name of Mr B teaches boilers but the codes he teaches are out of date. His class is decent but after the second week u have completed all of your projects. The rest of the time you just sit there. I asked him to teach me something else and his reply was do the same projects over and over again. A teacher named Mr P hasnt been in the field in over 20 years he told me,then to find out he is a carpenter. Another case of a teacher teaching outside his trade and knowledge A teacher by the name of Mr W is an electician who is teaching plumbing. This cycle is consistent with this school. The only segment that is actually worth it and you will come out of there very knowledgeable is the sprinklers and pipe fitting segment The last segment was welding. Complete waste of time. Plumbers rarely do the welding ourselves. That last segment could have and should be changed Its a constant battle to try and get the materials you need. You could spend the better part of your shop class trying to find material in your shop or tracking it down some where in the school . If you like criminals,fights,and weed this is definitely a place for you. Save your money and find another trade school. I would not recommend the plumbing course. I was a fool not have done My research on this School Before Hand. It is an Absolute waste of time and a total disaster . I went for the Automotive course, The Instructors are absolutely lazy and unprofessional ( a hand full ) and will even question themselves among a certain question at hand. If your teaching and your questioning whether your right or wrong inevitably you shouldn't be teaching. A few Teachers even horse around with the students while they give you a print out and say "here do this " no Direction or supervision . They're teaching material is outdated and their classrooms are filthy, with desks and chairs from what seems to be from the 70's. You wont get much out of it. I had to learn a lot on my own honestly. Good thing i prevailed with that, some professors will even read material straight out of a Book and not even go past that, then hand you print outs. Printouts?! what is this elementary?? Till this day they Have not helped me look for a Job. Even when your persistent with them it gets you no where . The lady who deals with Job Placement seems unsure of anything she says never returns phone calls or emails and gives you an Attitude when you ask questions. I hope everyone who has thoughts on applying to Apex see this; don't make the same mistake i have. All i've gained from this ordeal is backed up school and loan payments. For starters if you are someone who would like a quality education in a designated trade this is not the place for you. Three weeks into a refrigeration course I was told that the certification I was seeking is not something I can obtain after spending 900 hours in a classroom ( with a pretty crappy instructor who really needs a geography lesson). This is something I had asked about before I applied, and during the application process and was given the "yes, yes you can do that" answer. During the first weeks of class we learned about repairing home appliances like washing machines and microwaves.......not sure why this would be in a refrigeration course unless it's a lovely way to beef up the cost of tuition which will set you back 18k. So after three weeks and finally a clear answer from an instructor I withdrew and was left with a $1,800 bill. Taking my money and going elsewhere, I suggest you do the same. read more

I attended Apex and I had a good experience with the admissions counclers and with financial aid department and there very quick on helping you get into the school any way they can to MEET there numbers. because at the end of the day that's what you are. Now to some people this review is not helpful but for any guys out there whom are under 25 years old have a child and your not with the mother be very careful how you fill out these financial aid forms at apex. I was asked by one councler various questions about my living conditions and if i support my child and she did my paper work in such a way so that i could attend APEX that she failed to explain to me that if you are under 25 years old NO MATTER what they say FASFA wants your parents information and if the school gets audited and your name comes up guess who is stuck with the BILL? YOU, NOT THE SCHOOL. so be weary of these TRADE schools CUNY offers many trades it's a matter of research and commuting that's what i did before i began to attend APEX i found out what the councler did with my paper work and i left and went to a cuny because I am in no position to be paying that amount of money to anyone over another's error. read more
