A rare gem! I come from generations of doctors and, I like to think I have an idea of the type of care patients SHOULD have in this country. This gentleman should set the standard for all doctors in this and generations to follow! This doctor is money hungry person with no morals. The patients below stated the exact situation that happened to me. I had physical done with him 6 weeks ago and I got a bill from insurance company. Chi Shum ordered a bunch of lab test that was not necessary and the amount of was billed towards my insurance was around 5400 dollars and the insurance had covered only 4000 so I was left with a bill $1400. I tried calling the office and the black girl in the front was giving me attitude and Dr. Shum refuses to take care of the bill. Eventually I was stuck paying the insurance or else it would go to collections. This doctor is about the money, not the patient. The board and state needs to investigate him and his practice for DEFRAUDING patients continually. read more

I liked going to Dr Shum until he ordered a bunch of lab tests that i did not request (i requested routine tests) to a lab not under my insurance, told me he would take care of the nearly $300 bill that came, and then never took care of it after months of followups. I ended up paying so I wouldn't go into collections. $300 is a lot of money and tests shouldn't be sent to labs that are not in network, regardless of the deductible. it is the first time ive had to do that for routine yearly exams he never even offered me a refund. disappointing! read more

I'm updating my review of the good doctor because he moved offices and now is at 210 E 47th street (pretty much half a block away from his old office), AND!!!!! the offices are so much better. You can actually check in, wait for the doc, etc., and not be in anyone's way. His staff is kind of meh, And the doc continues to be pretty good. Always a quick email away, no long waits in the waiting room (the average wait time for me has been, tops, 10 minutes.) Looking at the down side though - he's a little too quick with the antibiotics and prednisone, so you kind of have to keep that in mind. I've been seeing him for about 15 years now, which I think says a lot. Is he the doctor that you'd go to if you had really serious medical issues? I don't know. But for the day to day stuff we all struggle with, he's great. read more

I came upon Shum because a colleague highly recommended him. Once I arrived I was dumbfounded by how run down the office is. But still decided to give him a try. Came to him for a reoccurring cold that had worsens into fever and off the bat he prescribed me with 10 days of antibiotics and over the counter meds. Reading into others Yelp reviews now, I realize that seems to be the his formulaic way. 3 days into my meds my fever persisted, symptoms worsened and called him. He then up the meds to steroids, another easy fix, formulaic way to fix an unknown problem. After 10 days of meds I went back for a follow up to ensure I am properly treated. To my surprise, he then diagnosed me with another condition and prescribed another 7 days of strong antibiotics. I further questioned him what exactly was the 10 days of medication for and what has been treated all this time? All along he never gave me direct answer then rushed me out. As of today, I am half way through my meds and symptoms from my first visit re-occurred. Frustrated by the regression I emailed him and demanded a clarification of what the hell is going on. It's not until then, he gave me his suspected diagnosis and told me to see a specialist instead. Doctors who does not have the hearts to correctly diagnosis or refer to specialist when necessary are the most disappointing. I would strongly urge one to look elsewhere, as he's not a doctor you can develop a relationship with or not be trusted. read more

I started seeing Dr. Shum in 2005 shortly after moving to NYC and on the recommendation of my accountant at work. I am so glad I did. While the office isn't the most welcoming/comfortable for me, personally, it is usually running on time, and there's no NP to see -- you get right in and see Dr. Shum. He listens, is caring, calm and does thorough reviews of your past doctors, tests, etc... and is patient with your questions, concerns, etc... He is very responsive to emails and getting in to see him very quickly is never a problem. read more

Not sure how the doctor is, but I do find the receptionist who pick up the phone incredibly rude and unhelpful. Ask if she takes an insurance, she ask for my member ID, which I provided. In 2 seconds she goes, I don't know, you will have to email insurance directly to doctor to verify. Then why ask my member ID then? As she clearly didn't even bother to check. Proceed to ask her I am interested in complete physical and how long appointment will be so I can coordinate time off from work for appt. She just goes half an hour, the doctor works fast. I question the timing, given will be new patient and full physical with all the testing I need in half an hour doesn't seem sufficient time. She goes then this is the right doctor for you then. Guess she is right, this definitely doens't seem to be right doctor for me given attitude I get just trying to make an appointment. read more

I visited Dr. Shum two months ago. That was my first time and will be the last time! I got a cold and went to see him, the check-in was quick. So was the meeting with him, it was about 10 to 15 mins. he gave me a quick check and 10 days antibiotics. My coughing didn't get better at all after 10 days. Later I found out Dr. Shum claimed about $600 on my insurance. I was a little bit surprised about the price. What surprised me more is Dr. Shum sent me an invoice of $20.77 for the bill balance. I called in the Doctor and complained about this. I believe no one likes surprise bills, I was expecting to pay my co-pay only. Dr. Shum told me don't come back to the office again and hang the phone. Thank you Dr. Shum, thank you for such a BAD experience. Don't worry, I will pay you the the $20.77, it is totally worth it to avoid the doctors like you in the future! read more

Maybe okay on medical judgments, but ethically questionable and definitely has poor staff management skills. I saw this doctor for a few years and had to stop after an incident involving one of his assistants (hopefully was a temporary one). While the doctor was away for vacation, she refused to help me check on an insurance approval and was extremely rude and irresponsible in handling the matter. When I made a complaint to the doctor, to cover her own fault, she lied blatantly and even made defamatory accusations to my character. Without any further investigation and without verifying any facts, the doctor took her words as is and threatened to stop helping me with my insurance approval, which would further delay the treatment I was hoping to get. Luckily, I had friends who specialize in medical liabilities and told me that I can file a complaint at the state/ABA medical board for this kind of behaviour. The doctor backed off after being made aware of this. It seems from the previous reviews that this was not the first time that the doctor telling a patient to go away when there are good faith disputes. So if this happens to you and it affects your well-being, consider filing an ethical complaint at the state/ABA medical board. read more

While Dr. Shum seemed like a well-informed doctor with a pleasant demeanor, there are far too many options in New York City to settle for less. To start, his office consists of a series of rooms and hallways from a converted apartment. Everything is cramped and it's the most rundown doctor's office I've ever been to. My appointment with Dr. Shum was one of the quickest doctor's visits I had ever been to. This reflects poorly on a doctor who was seeing me for the first time ever and had no idea about my health. Dr. Shum's staff also came across as harried and in a rush. I had an especially disturbing experience when it came time for one of his nurses to draw my blood. I have huge veins that are visible from across the room and she was unable draw any blood, blaming it on a "collapsed vein". Everyone has to start somewhere, but I'd expect better from a practice like that of Dr. Shum's. In my case I pay a $27 copay no matter where I go. So, why go to a doctor's office that reminds me of being in a ragtag backcountry clinic? Don't let the fancy website fool you, there are better choices out there. Update (11/12/12): on a positive note, Dr. Shum is extremely responsive to patient's emails. I emailed him for my test results, and had them on my computer as a PDF file within minutes. I just want a doctor who knows his stuff. You don't have to be super friendly, you can have an odd sense of humor, I don't really care as long as you fix whatever is wrong with me. I sought out Dr. Shum during a desperate episode and was torn between seeing a dermatologist or an internist. Within 2 minutes of me describing my symptoms he diagnosed it and confirmed his suspicions with a checkup. I was just impressed with how quickly and accurately he was able to identify the problem. I've been to so many doctors where they would give you a few different possible diagnoses, and a variety of drugs to combat them all. I know they're just trying to cover all the bases, but like, you know, it may be helpful to nail that shit down in case I ever land in a hospital. Like I said, I'm a fan of Dr. Shum's abilities - he's not much of a conversationalist but then again, that's not what he's there for. I was a bit turned off by the lack of defined roles for his aid/nurse/receptionist and the overall organization of his office. Do you want a great doctor in Manhattan? Do you? You found him. Dr. Shum is the best doctor I have ever been to in my entire life. He is amazing. Personal. Friendly. Caring. And a cracker-jack physician to say the least. From what I hear, it's hard to find such a doctor in NYC. I was lucky enough to start seeing Dr. Shum six years ago when I first moved to New York. No wait time. You get to see the man himself right away. And the old-school style office makes you feel like, "Yeah, I'm seeing my doctor. I'm not in some ultra-fancy hipster office with sheer white walls and glib decorations for the insurance money. I'm in New York." Dr. Shum was extremely knowledgable, professional and courteous during my appointment. The clinic is a bit difficult to spot as it is an old apartment right by Lexington that was renovated into a clinic, but once you find the spot, everything goes like a breeze. This was my first primary physician type of a visit, and I had a lot of questions/requests, which were all answered by dr. Shum on spot. Although this was my first visit, I immediately developed a sense of trust with him, mainly because of his careful examination, kind explanation and files with numerous patients' name stacked on his bookcase. Let me share my final experience with this doctor, the one that convinced me to look elsewhere. It is a perfect example of his approach. Several months ago, I developed what looked like a blister on the inside of my lower lip. It was filled with liquid and would grow and shrink throughout the day. It wasn't painful. It would react to spicy foods by swelling up. I'm not a doctor, but to me these symptoms suggested a saliva-filled cyst. Dr. Shum, after listening to my description, prescribed anti-viral medication and told me that should take care of the problem. After taking the full course of the medication as prescribed, with the problem persisting, I informed him that the treatment wasn't working. I specifically mentioned my suspicion it was a cyst and the reasons for the suspicion. He ignored my comments and prescribed another anti-viral, a stronger one this time. He clearly thought it was some sort of a herpes outbreak, although I don't have herpes. At this point I figured there was no point talking to him. I ignored his new prescription and went to a specialist (oral surgeon) instead. The specialist had promptly diagnosed the problem as a mucocele, a cyst resulting from a blocked or damaged salivary gland. A successful surgery followed, which got rid of the problem that plagued me for almost three months. For fairness' sake, I will give Dr. Shum two stars. He's not truly atrocious; he just doesn't care. His patients are scheduled back-to-back and he takes no time to get to know you, or to really listen to you. Patients beware. read more

I think I first went to Dr Shum 2006. This was before RateMyDoctor and all these kinds of websites became big, so I think I just picked Dr Shum because I lived nearby... turned out to be a really good choice! I have stayed with Dr Shum for 8 years now, even as I moved around to all kinds of places in New York; the UWS, the UES and now Brooklyn. I can't imagine having a better doctor. I trust him fully and feel very confident in telling him anything I have to tell him. The thing I probably like the most about Dr Shum is that he always listens to me and if I have specific requests (that are not unreasonable), he always tries to accommodate me. For example, I had a few years where I had tonsillitis every so often, and I learned very quickly that the antibiotic Amoxicillin did not work for me, whereas the antibiotic Augmentin always did. Most doctors would insist that I take Amoxicillin first and argue that that "should" work, and when it didn't work, they would move me to Augmentin a week later, just causing me unnecessary pain for a week. Dr Shum listens to these kinds of things and does his best to accommodate them as long as they are within reason. He has a very down-to-earth attitude with his patients. Dr Shum is also really good about staying in touch over email, and typically responds very quickly, which I really appreciate too. So i was referred to Dr Luachango but made an appointment to see Dr. Shum based on all the reviews. I arrive 15 minutes before my schedule time for which I had to call the office to reconfirm since no one called me, only to be greeted by "they're not here" I stated "my appointment is for 8" the response I got was "well they're not here. You can call them at 9-9:30." Seriously?!! I have a scheduled appointment. This young man tells me I don't work for Dr Shum but for Dr Lauchango. Here's his card you can call at 9-9:30. I drove 45 minutes to get to the city prior to my appointment time to allow for paperwork only to be met with sass and NO ACCOMMODATION. Office not appealing at all and too bad I won't get to experience a visit with Dr Shum and will not recommend. Your office staff represents you! read more

Stay away- period. Went in for a routine physical and turns out that this doctor ordered unnecessary tests for someone of my age. What made it worse was that he didn't bother to inform me that he was sending the lab all these unnecessary tests. Ended up getting a bill for $250 in the mail! Be careful if you receive such fraud bills in the mail and complain immediately as it seems that he is defrauding patients this way by doing unneeded tests during a ROUTINE physical. Ive been a patient of Dr. Shum for about 5 years now and I have nothing but GREAT things to say about him. He is the best doctor I have ever seen..hands down..and its not even close. I've been seeing Dr. Shum for over 2 years. The service I received has been outstanding/Amazing/excellent (you get the hint). His diagnosis' have always been pin point precise. I could never believe a review that says he was rude. Totally false and not accurate at all! I couldn't see myself going to anyone else. I would recommend him to anyone (which I have). Even when I don't make an appointment, I've never waited more than 15-20 minutes, he always finds time to squeeze me in. When I do make an appt., I have never waited more than 5 minutes, which is unheard of with other doctors. If there were 9 stars, I would give it to him. He is extremely intelligent and if he does turn to his computer once or twice, that could be you he is answering in those emails which im sure you appreciate.
