While I am upset about what happened to me, I just want to let others know so they're aware of the risks of seeing these "doctors." I was going to Charlottesville Dermatology for about five months to take the medication Isotretinoin (formerly known as Accutane). The PA (not a dermatologist) that prescribed it to me had a pretty meh personality (Amy Randolph? Rudolph?) and did not answer the questions I had in any sociable way, but I did not really care because I just wanted to get through the medication. I started seeing someone named Ines, and she was better. I always thought their billing/reception staff was pretty rude/incompetent, but again, I viewed this as a temporary relationship, so I didn't change providers. At this point, I probably would have given them 3 stars. For those of you that don't know, Accutane is highly regulated, so female patients must take a pregnancy test monthly per federal law. The doctor's office must then fill the prescription within seven days of that test, or another test is required. That's right, they forgot to fill my prescription, so I had to go back for another pregnancy test and was unable to take my medication for a week. No one apologized. Then I found out through a friend that my medication is unequivocally supposed to be taken with a fat-heavy meal, such as salmon or nuts, to ensure absorption. I immediately verified this online, and according to the Mayo Clinic, it's true. I took an extremely intense and life-altering medication (you have to use two forms of birth control on it and cannot drink more than one drink) only to find out that for five months it likely wasn't properly being absorbed. This could explain why my acne only started to clear up after I started going to UVA's Dermatology group. The kicker is that you can only take so much Accutane in your system, so I now have to go off it. I have no way of knowing how much medication was being absorbed, and I never will. This is medical malpractice, and while I will not pursue legal action, I can only hope that no one else has to.

Bottom line: ob/gyn Edward Wolanski came pretty highly recommended to me, with the one caveat that…read morehe has an unhealthy, critical view of weight gain during pregnancy. It turns out that's true. But it also seems to be true that for other criteria like a low-intervention approach to birth, he's the best ob/gyn in Charlottesville (by default - he seems to be the only low-intervention ob/gyn here!). So, you have to pick your poison. Or maybe enough women telling him we don't like his unnecessarily strict, critical stance could influence the way he relates to patients? One can dare to hope. Context: I moved to Charlottesville about two months ago and began asking for recommendations for a good ob/gyn. Edward Wolanski was a name that kept coming up. Friends and friends-of-friends recommended him because they said he tends to be low intervention - he serves as the back-up for a midwife, which is rare and usually indicates an appreciation for a natural approach to childbirth. The one nuance to all the glowing reviews was that he could be brusque and unnecessarily strict about weight, having once told a patient, "We don't want a chubby Christa!" (Except he used her name, of course.) I took this info with a grain of salt, but sure enough, during our consultation visit, one of the first things Wolanski brought up was his recommendation that pregnant women should only gain 20-25 pounds during a pregnancy: this goes against the medically recognized guideline of 25-35 pounds for women who, like me, are in a healthy weight range at the start of pregnancy. I questioned whether his adapted guidelines set up potentially harmful expectations for women who have struggled with eating disorders, and he actually responded, "I've had many patients who have dealt with anorexia, and they tend to do quite well during pregnancy because they watch what they eat." Uh, yeah, that's what anorexics do, but I think our definition of "doing quite well" are not the same. That's the bad news. The worse news is that Wolanski may still be the best (only??) ob/gyn in Charlottesville for women like me, who value a low-intervention approach to childbirth. In the past week, I've researched ob/gyns in Cville like it's my job, and while Martha Jefferson Hospital is more advanced in terms of holistic care of mama + baby, I have yet to find another ob/gyn practice that is recommended for being accepting of a more natural approach to childbirth. I'll update this if/when I do (and if you have recommendations - message me!!)

I had labs drawn in Sept 2025 and now (12/09/25) I want to print the lab results to send to another provider- ideally I would like to send the results to myself ......without having to print them. The portal version cannot be shared with another provider without reflecting poorly on the practice - since all the pt can see is comments about lab results- but no numbers/results. After tedious investigation, the pt can print one result at a time, if they are lucky enough to find the hidden results. There is no way to download or print results in a professional usual lab results version. This is inexcusable and is another barrier placed on my healthcare by the owner of this practice. Dr Dagli and the nursing staff are outstanding providers. I will continue to see them but will not have any labs or procedures done at this practice since the patient cannot easily access their own health care records/results etc. In 2025, I do not understand why such patriarchal medical policies and processes are in effect- by law, the pt is supposd to have easy access to all medical records including lab and procedure results. Unbelievable, such a sign of disrespect for the patient. Dr Dagli is wonderful and why she tolerates the policies of her practice, baffles me.

After my experience today, I understand why I was told that. Two stars instead of one simply to acknowledge the good provider I saw for my appointment. It went downhill fast after that. The actual provider that I saw for my appointment was a very nice person, and when I left the initial appointment, I thought, wow, that was great! What was not clear to me upfront is that the primary medication that they prescribed me for my skin condition would possibly not be covered by my insurance. Or, perhaps it might be covered by my insurance, but requires a prior authorization, which this office refused to initiate. When I asked why they would be unwilling to do the prior authorization, as my pharmacy was curious about that, they simply said round and round "that is our office policy." I asked for specific information about that policy to take to my insurance company, such as the medication being used off label or something... And even after multiple calls and text messages, I have no idea why they refuse to do this. They keep stating, "our office policy states that we do not do prior authorizations." The equivalent of a parent telling their kid "because I said so." The alternative medication that was offered was something that the actual provider said wouldn't be appropriate, and there were no other alternatives provided. They kept offering me a good RX coupon to save some money, but given how much I already pay for health insurance and co-pays, paying out-of-pocket for medication even with a coupon was crazy expensive! Ultimately, I left my final conversation with this office feeling so frustrated. I would probably be better off if I'd never gone to this dermatologist in the first place. I started the day with an over the counter medication I ordered from Amazon, and I'm left with the same, plus the headache of having to deal with their frustrating and still unexplained policy all afternoon. Ugh!!!
