It's pretty tucked away, on a street just off notre dame which seems pretty dedicated to associations, fairtrade shops and restaurants with good ethics. Au clair de lune is an organic restaurant, boasting vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Inside there are not many places to sit, and all are usually taken at lunch time.. It's a popular place! Apparently during the warmer summer months there is seating available outside, around the back of the building. The interior is very rustic with many interesting eco-friendly seeming decorations, many of which are recycled. There are few choices and the opening times are limited (11.45-2.30 monday-saturday, evenings closed apart from group bookings) but this restaurant wins in that it is ethical and boasts good quality ingredients and imaginative preparations. It is therefore hardly surprising that Au Clair de Lune is popular and requires a reservation. I ordered the only remaining vegetarian option alongside 3 of my friends, the other one ordered fish cooked in coconut milk. The vegetarian dish consisted of a slice of polenta topped with ratatouille, roasted pumpkin, served with a salad (too bitter for me, I didn't like it so my boyfriend finished it off), a lentil puree, hummus, red cabbage. It was delicious, though I could have easily have eaten more. We all opted for the pudding, three of us taking the gluten free chestnut flour chocolate fondant with a hint of orange, the other taking the lemon tart, as recommended by the chef. Apparently there was a game, "guess the secret ingredient". None of us could guess, and it turned out that it was tarragon. It was nice to have a little dining challenge and some friendly none-invasive interaction with the manager of the restaurant towards the end of our meal. The prices were very reasonable, I payed 12 euros for the main and pudding. Recommended.

Do you see a trend here? * * * Like an Elephant is an insanely good vegan restaurant. There are vegan cartoons all over the restaurant. The print is fine so it takes some examination to see them all and get all the jokes. The place is very small making this a tough reservation to get. The menu is even smaller. Three choices of entree. Three choices of main course - one of which is always a vegan burger. Two choices of dessert. You frankly won't need anything else in this world. * * * A staple of Jewish vegetable cooking is a tsimmes. This is a stewed dish with carrots, apricots and lots of other orange fruits and vegetables. Like an Elephant turns this concept into a soup. Carrot veloute with apricots and subtle spices. Never have I been so in love with a carrot. Although frankly, the apricots were doing a whole lot of the talking. * * * My lovely wife had the mushroom risotto with lemon. She was head over heels in love. I had the vegan burger of the day. The burger was insanely good. Zucchini has never been put to better use. But the strange magic of the dish was their alternative to French Fries. These were plain ordinary potato wedges sauteed in olive oil, and vegan butter The same "home fries" concept you would get at an Alabama diner. But when the olive oil is really really good, and the vegan butter is better than butter from a cow ... And the potatoes have lots and lots and lots of olive oil and vegan butter ... Now you are looking at pure and unadulterated decadence. Veggie burger plates are usually just okay. This was the veggie burger and fries of midnight dreams. * * * Desserts were variations on a theme of panna cotta. It however was not the spartan desserts of good-for-you vegetables-are-for-suffering pious-vegan restaurants. These were sensuous and pleasant. But I was like a man who had found true love-making happiness And was out-like-a-light in a deep post-romantic slumber. The dessert was there, but I barely remember it * * * Magical Burger Magical Fries Magical Burger Magical Fries. And every single one of them was a healthy vegetable.

Tonight, while my wife was hard at work in Grenoble, eating a traditional french dinner with her…read moreco-workers, I was left to fen for myself. So I set out to try some Indian food. Let me preface by saying that the Indian food I have fell in love with is the Basamati rice, chicken Ttkka masala and palek paneer of the United States. So any review I may write about the Indian food in Grenoble, France is going to be a comparison to that for me, so take it with a grain of salt, so to speak. I went to the closet indian restaurant to my hotel, which happened to be Le Prince Indien. They had a buffet for 20€, which I was excited about, especially after looking at the buffet and finding out they had some of my favorite standbys. There was chicken Tikka Masala, Basamati rice, samosas, tandoori chicken, some kind of lamb marrow dish, a sort of Indian Meatball dish, and palek paneer without the paneer cheese. So I guess it was just palek. And they brought a great big bottle of water and some naan to the table. The chicken tikka masala tasted like tandoori chicken that had a watered down tomato based sauce with onions and red peppers in it. And the paneer had butter inside it, which I didn't care for. SO I had to take a star away for that. C'est la vie, right? All kidding aside, everything was very flavorful and I sincerely enjoyed it. If I lived here, I would be here once a week getting my Indian on.

And finding a restaurant in Chamonix that offers something else is hard, especially without getting fussy and upscale. All items on the menu are very fresh and are made by a small kitchen staff. The food was good, a little pricey. Service was good but a little overworked since it is a busy place. The restaurant was very busy for the Wednesday night we ate here, nearly every table was full for every time slot. Yet many other restaurants in Cham were not busy. So La Petite is a very popular but small restaurant. If you are interested in coming to La Petite, please be sure you make reservations early in the evening as popular items on the menu sell out quickly. If you want to eat at a non-touristy real French Restaurant in Chamonix, I would recommend La Petite. Just be cautioned, you will not get hugh portions of cheese, dries meat and potato that Savoy specialty restaurants in Cham may provide. But what you do get is very fresh and very tasty.
