Wife N and I are down here in Puerto Vallarta (really Nuevo Vallarta Nayarit) for a week's getaway…read morefrom dreary and cold Portland OR. Tonight, we're hitting one of the premium restaurants in the resort: Piaf. Piaf is billed as their French cuisine restaurant, one of four international restaurants in the resort. We actually hit Piaf twice in our stay so this review covers several visits. Prices are listed on the menu, but for anyone staying in the resort everything is included including a bottle of wine for your table--they have a reasonably hefty selection of wines as well). First visit: The various courses arrived. Amuse bouche (quick one-bite appetizer served in a spoon) of a raw tuna tartare and various herbs and oils, topped with a small dollop of caviar. Wow, heaven in a bite. Next the various courses from salad through to soup and meat. Salad, artfully plated with carrot and fruit slices and a couple grilled shrimp, had an excellent vinaigrette and a few purees dotting the side. The lobster "cappucino" (which contained no coffee) was one of the best bisques I've ever had. The foie gras was absolute heaven, though it had this "fruit gelee" on top that was neither flavorful nor manipulable, just kept rolling off everywhere... Mains ordered were the Duck a l'Orange and the Filet Mignon. The Duck was exactly as it was supposed to be, super flavorful with a Grand Marnier puree, rendered properly, and a perfect mid-rare. Same with the steak. Both fantastic picks. Dessert was a fabulous souffle served with creme Anglaise and a Grand Marnier sorbet, which we were instructed to take between bites of souffle. The combination was fantastic! Second visit: French Onion soup was way up there in taste and quality. That soup was rendered for many hours...So good! Rack of lamb: served on a diced ratatouille with a basil polenta puree, and the Cornish game hen, flavor was wonderful though one or two pieces were slightly over and a bit dry. Dessert souffle for the second visit because why not? Fabulous, definitely one of the best resort restaurants we've ever eaten at. If we ever return here to the resort, this is absolutely a must-hit (maybe even twice) return visit. Service was fantastic--everything you'd expect from a high-end restaurant, with several servers each teaming up to clear and replace plates, deliver food and keep the wines flowing. Fabulous in every way!
