KIM'S COTTAGE - quaint, homey decor in my room -AW

    KIM'S COTTAGE

Great place to stay, more home-like than hotel!…read more When traveling thru small towns, I don't typically hold high expectations of hotels or eateries. Traffic drives quality, and low traffic is usually met with an appropriate level of accommodations. Kim's Cottage is a diamond in the rough: old school downtown main drag, commercial storefront, repurposed with quaint, homey cottage style dwellings inside. Adorned with antique bedding, bedside-bench & credenza, my cottage (#1) had unique charm with vintage touch. While I didn't partake in the amenity, my room featured a decent jacuzzi tub as well. Where the Best Western down the road may offer a continental breakfast, Kim's Cottage had a lovely spread of cereal and breakfast bars, generously available for consumption in my room, on-demand, day or night. I truly appreciate the accommodation! The bathroom was clean and again, featured homey details. Just felt "more friendly" than a cold hotel room. Fresh towels, actual shampoo & body wash I'd want to use, and even a stash of fresh q-tips. I found Kim's Cottage courtesy of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, while shopping for a hotel for a pending business trip and couldn't be happier with the recommendation. While I'm unsure if my work will again take me to Canadian, I'm so thankful for the experience and for enjoying a good night's sleep! Thanks Kim's Cottage! -AW

Weather had been bad all the way up from Texas and back and we'd been booking last minute cheapest rooms, but I wanted his last night on the road to be special because it had been such an arduous trip. He really liked it but felt it was too "frilly" for his comfort. He's kind of a bull in the china shop type guy. But he went on and on about how much I would have loved it, and how fun it was that the suites were built as separate cottages inside of the historic building. The hosts were very nice. And he loved the hot tub and didn't want to leave it. He said there was also a performance theatre next door, also owned by Kim's family. All in all, well worth it to stop and stay at Kim's.

Krupa and Aaron were very hospitable, with Krupa greeting us, directing us to good food in the area (Mesquite Canyon Steakhouse), and letting us know her husband Aaron would be making eggs in the morning, included in the very affordable room charge. They were happy to make our eggs with olive instead of "vegetable" oil, and actually ended up doing that for all guests. Don't miss this sweet respite in your travels through Texas.

Let's be clear: this is not a luxury hotel. But for a basic roadside motel, it's a swell place to stop on a road trip. Our room was clean and fairly spacious; the beds were comfortable; the water pressure in the shower was good; and the location was just far enough off Route 66 to be quiet and afford us a good night's sleep. The solid construction of the building contributed to the quiet. The exterior of the building is well-kept, and everything has been recently painted, with the Texas star on the outside of every room's door. The rooms are equipped with old-fashioned wall heaters and A/C units; we stopped here in October, so they were sufficient for our needs. The buildings form a "U" around a paved parking area for cars and trucks right in front of the rooms; there is also a central gravel area for semis or larger vehicles. The night we stayed there, many of the rooms were occupied, and this seemed to be a favored stop for hunters. Wi-fi is available and free, but outdated by current security standards, so we did not use it. There is a breakfast room, with all the usual offerings; there are limited hot food selections, but they do have a waffle maker. Breakfast is included in the price of the room, which is already a great deal. The proprietor was very courteous, and check-in and check-out were extremely fast and efficient. It's just a 10- to 15-minute walk to Rusty's (a GREAT place for dinner) and the U Drop Inn Café (known from Disney's "Cars") on the corner of Route 66. We truly enjoyed our stay at the Shamrock Country Inn and will definitely stop here again on our next trip through the Texas panhandle.
