I had been out in Alfriston for the day with the new boy and after a visit to the local gallery and a glorious walk through the Sussex countryside, we popped in her for a quick glass of red before heading home. The pub, like everything in the picturesque village of Alfriston, is old (14th century) and quaint. Think open fires, low wooded beams and lots of character. Wanting to make the most of the early spring sunshine we sat in the garden which is also beautiful. The service was reasonably friendly if a little brisk and the wine was decidedly average, but the surrounding more than made up for this. We bumped into friends that were having the Sunday roast and they also commented that they had waited a long time for the food and there was nothing special about it, I would like to try this for myself though before making a judgment, maybe something from the al la carte menu which look pretty tasty. I will be back and will happily update my review when I can judge the food for myself!

We arrived late on a Friday night and were warmly greeted and given a small tour of the house. Wendy brought us up some tea and home-made cake, served on fine china with silver cutlery. There are only 3 rooms in the house and all of them are decorated beautifully, as is the rest of the house. The breakfast (prepared by Wendy) is fabulous. There's a nice selection of fruit, cereals, tea & coffee, juice, and a warm breakfast including fantastic crispy bacon and fried mushrooms which are to die for. The breakfast is completed with home-made bread and jam, and most importantly, brilliant conversation at the breakfast table. The whole place is delightful, and if you're looking for a quiet romantic getaway on the south coast, I don't think you'll get better than this. Ocklynge Manor deserves far better than 5 stars. I'd give them 6 out of 5!

Service is excellent and friendly, every need catered to if possible. Food is delicious fresh and seasonal, locally sourced and well balanced. Wine list very good. The rooms are beautiful, beds so comfortable and competitive in price. By far the nicest place to stay in Alfriston. Nick the owner is a brilliant host, warm and helpful.

Great breakfasts which were a decent size and didn't wait long at all for them either. The owner(i think or manager) was very helpful with lots of info and history on the area that i didn't actualy know myself. He was able to answer every question i had about his already interesting stories and gave great recommendations on where to go. I didn't have a problem with the wireless internet except that it didn't work in some of the rooms, so I needed to sit in a small common area which i didn't mind really as they are comfortable enough.

I was a solo traveller and stayed at the Gyves House for 1 night. I arrived on the last evening of the Airbourne tatoo and despite having been flat out that week, the owners were still cheerful and helpful. Breakfast was very nice too. I will definitely check the Gyves House first for availability when I next pay a visit to Eastbourne and recommend it to anyone who wants a more personal stay in Eastbourne.
