From the very first day, we knew this school was something special--but looking back now, we realize it's been even more than we ever imagined. The teachers and staff are truly second to none. They are warm, loving, incredibly dedicated, and make every child feel seen, supported, and celebrated. The care and attention they give to each student is remarkable--they've created an environment where kids are not only learning, but thriving. One thing we've especially appreciated is how incredibly communicative the staff is. Whether it's through the ClassDojo app or via email, we always felt in the loop and connected to what our son was learning and experiencing each day. That kind of transparency and partnership with parents is priceless. Another beautiful part of our time at Rollingwood has been the community of families we've met along the way. Keeping the kids together year after year has allowed them to form deep, meaningful friendships, and we've built our own bonds with other parents that we'll carry with us for years to come. The teachers and staff go beyond just classroom education to make sure that kids are learning after school by giving up their own off time. PROS: - Teachers are amazing and do their best to educate each child and meet them where they are. - Administrators and office staff get the short end of the stick having to deal with a myriad of personalities and still be expected to smile all the time but they somehow manage to do it. - Community engagement to help parents and students get extra help where needed. CONS: - These poor educators oftentimes have to drag parents in and coerce them into helping their kids with reading and math. The amount of coaxing that is done so that the kids can do well on tests is sad but the school does a good job of trying to entice both students and parents to study after school with their engagement nights. Named after the first African-American superintendent from Suffolk, Mack Benn Junior Elementary School opened back in 1998. Sadly, Mack Benn Junior drowned during a boat accident. Here are some pros and cons about the school: * The classrooms are small and too many students are crammed. The teachers do their best; speaking about teachers, my son's teacher is Mrs. Maskelony and she rocks! I was so pleased that my son had an awesome teacher for his first time. I also like the principal, David LeFevre. This was his first time at Mack Benn and I think he has been great. He is warm, caring, and attentive. * I am impressed about the gifted program called Quest. Compared to another school and gifted program for my middle son, Quest is much better. The students got to talk to an astronaut virtually and a video conference with Barbara Bush. * I didn't want to talk about the administrators (office staff) because I know it can be a hard job. However, many parents say some of the staff is rude and even my son said the same. When I asked him what he didn't like about the school, he said some administrators aren't very nice. I would rather have my son at home but I have been more impressed than I thought I would. My son has been happy there and that is what matters. I think Mack Benn Jr. is one of the best elementary schools in Suffolk but keep in mind that all of Suffolk schools are subpar.

Anna is the director and head instructor of this location. She is so kind and very communicative. Each day I can see my kids improving. My daughter who is 7, enjoys coming to tutoring and doing her Kumon homework. My son is still struggling but I am also certain it is because Kumon is pushing him and helping him learn more than what the school system has. I have no complaints and really love that this place is helping my kids get up to grade level in reading, perhaps one day ahead. The Kumon curriculum is of international standards which Virginia Beach school system is not. Therefore, I do believe having my kids enrolled here will help advance them.

Be aware!! This environment is not suited to all children or to all families. There are no activities to foster imaginative play or free exploration. There is no housekeeping corner, no dress up center, no sand table, no water table, no block center. The structure of the program is to the extreme. Children have choice in their activities; however, the activities are extremely regimented and structured. You may use an activity but only following the highly specific instructions. For example, you may use blocks but only to sort by size. You may not build a tower or wall. Communication is a serious problem. On a day to day basis, you will have no idea what your child is working or what skills they are mastering. There are no written notes sent home at the end of the week describing the books they read, or the songs they sing, or how your child's day is going. Unless you initiate communication, there is none. Children here develop skills and are high achieving. However, at what cost. OBSERVE and decide for yourself. BE CONCERNED
