Although the last review was a couple of years ago, it was positive, so we thought we would give it a go. The pub is quite large, but with a cosy feel. You have the choice of dining at the more formal restaurant area, or the bar area. The only difference being that in the restaurant area they come and take your order, and you pay on leaving. In the bar area, you have to order and pay at the bar, although you can run a tab and oay on leaving. The pub itself had an old pub appeal, but also looked stylish and modern. All areas where very clean, including the toilets. As it was such a cold and damp day, I wanted comfort food. Good pubs can offer the best comfort food. The Owl certainly did, and like good comfort food, we did not have to wait long for it. I went for the Ham, Egg and Chips. It was a very large portion. The ham was really tasty. The eggs were fried just how I like them. I usually order over-medium, as I hate any of the white being runny. These eggs were gold sunny side up, with no sign of any runny egg white. The chips were crisp and non-greasy. They also made their own red onion relish. I wasn't sure about this, and my ketchup was on my plate before I even tried it. I should have tasted it first, as it was delicious, and really complimented the taste of the ham. Basic comfort food that delivered. I loved it. The staff were really friendly and attentive, with a cheery wave and goodby greeting as we left. I would highly recommend this pub, if you are in the area. It's even worth a slight detour if your travelling back to London from the south coast. Well worth bookmarking.

First impressions were of a traditional British pub experience, which was a good start. Our clumsiness of grabbing a table and figuring out whether we needed to go to the bar to order or wait to be served, surely gave us away as "not locals." Our server was friendly and provided us with our menus and took our drinks order. The one shortfall was that the menu had a number of items not available and with an assist from a customer, two of us needed a rethink on their meal. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! Its a dog friendly pub so you do get a lot of the local farmers and game-keepers in there which adds to a nice genuine rustic atmosphere. The food is excellent and they always keep a specials board running with what ever fresh produce is available. There's a handfull of tables and chairs at the front of the pub which gets the best of the sun and is great to enjoy your lunch or if the weathers bad, sit inside by the nice big open fire and warm up.

Perhaps though, you wouldn't expect the quality of food by looking at the outside of the pub. Never has the phrase, "don't judge a book by its cover," been more true. What is generally nice about this place is that they do a few things really well, rather than having huge selections of mediocre tat. This starts with the beer - a choice of four very nice ales, we went for the Dark Star "Hophead" a golden pale ale, which has a lovely full flavour with a hint of honey and elder-flower. The menu here changes often, almost daily, depending on what is available and the chef decides to make. Our starters were ham and apple terrine with a lovely pickle, chicken and liver paté with sourdough bread & homemade chutney, Selsy crab and salmon cakes. All fantastic. Not only did it all taste fantastic but the presentation is worth the price alone. You can see the menu in the photos I've added. For mains I had hanger steak with purple sprouting broccoli - incredible melt in the mouth texture that worked so well with the broccoli and a tasty sauce. Everyone else had fish was being at the coast is a great choice. My youngest daughter had hake in a beer batter which was so, so light and crispy. My wife and eldest daughter had pan fried fish (trout and turbot) with mash. Seriously, I could have eaten all the mains myself - I've not seen my wife finish a meal so quick, ok I kept stealing bits of her plate because it was rather yummy. I couldn't reach my daughters plate so easily. Desserts were equally well presented and equally tasty. The highlight was the chocolate brownie that was rich and gooey it the right proportions. The rummed raisins in my sable biscuit chocolate cake were fantastic. These lovely fruits just kept popping in my mouth. My eldest had the raspberry meringue which thankfully wasn't too sweet, although the meringue was a little harder than I expect it was obviously made in the kitchen as it had a lovely chewy inside rather than being all air. Overall, a brilliant meal. If you were eating this in London you would be paying twice as much as you are here. While you would probably only get half of the meal in London too. This is top quality food with portions you can live on. Go here now before the word gets out.
