I thought I'd try the chips here the other day as I'd read good stuff about it in a Brummy newspaper and wasn;t too happy about the quality of the chips at Highfield chippy, Hall Green.
So trotted in and was about to order the £1 cone, but the owner lifted it so I could see it and I wnet for the medium which was £1.60 which for the amount of chips was just as well really as even that wasn.t a gut load.
I didn't have the fish for two reasons:
i) chip quality determines the overall outcome for me ie they are as important as the fish, and the fish are more consistently nicely cooked everywhere
ii) I'm a poor ducky, so wasn't going to take the risk in case the chips were rubbith.
Now I'm going to rate this chippy accoridng to my standard dynamic
Cookedness: 70% were cooked enough, although barely
Chip colour: 90% white, 10% cream
Exterior crispiness eg exterior lifting off into a light delicate layer: 2% of chips were like this
Interior fluffy moistness: 5% of choips were like this, effect they were a bit stodgy and some a bit undercooked
Overall chip moreishness: 10% were moreish due to sucking enough fat from cooking to make them lovely.
Staff: 8/10 pretty nice.
I heard from one chip bloke in a London chippy that potatoes in winter don;t give good chips. Perhaps in Birmingham it in summer too.
I'll give the place another try as I went early and maybe the oil wasn;t too temp. Other people elsewhere have reported well on Chequers and it'd be nice if I had a good chippy near me. read more
