We were craving Mexican for lunch and saw Chelito's while walking around Estes. They had no wait time, unlike the other restaurants in town. This should have been warning that things may not be up to par. After taking our order we were surprised to find out that chips and salsa was considered an appetizer and not free unlike 99% of all other Mexican restaurants. We decided to order it regardless. Thankfully, the salsa was good. When the entrees came out, mine was completely different from what I ordered. (I ordered a Chimichanga and an enchilada dish came out. Wuuut?) The server was apologetic and ran it back to the kitchen. Soon the Chimichanga came out and we started to eat. My partner ate a chili relleno and said it was soggy in the middle and hard as a rock on each end...ie nuked and not cooked. My Chimichanga was also soggy. It tasted OK, but I've never eaten a non crispy one...so again....probably thrown in a microwave and not cooked properly. On the way out of the restaurant, you can see into their pantry. We saw canned tomatoes among other non-fresh items. Really? Not even fresh tomatoes? So this place nukes non fresh items and serves them up as restaurant quality. No. Just no. The only reason why this isn't a one star is the servers were polite and nice. Do yourselves a favor and don't eat here if you want authentic FRESH Mexican food. There was a significantly long time to order, however our food came out fast I ordered the Enchiladas Del Mar, and about 3 bites into the enchilada I found myself chewing on something tough... as I spit it out I realized it was the crab... :( thinking it was a fluke, I took another bite to find the entire thing tasting bitter and sour... MY SEAFOOD WAS SPOILED and still served to me!!! My husband ordered the special, steak and shrimp. Ordered his steak medium and it came out chewy and well-done. This is one of those cases were Yelp needs a negative number. I have never gotten up and walked out of a restaurant until today. And 2/3 of our order was sitting on the table. Really slow service started the experience. We did have an order of guacamole and it was okay. It was $12 for an order made from a single advocado, kind of pricey. Then the food showed up and the waiter informed us there was an upcharge on our daughter's meal, not when ordered. Which wasn't the real issue. My meal was wrong, he brought me a carne asada but I had ordered the carnitas. But that too was still okay, it happens. The waiter wanted to argue that I had in fact ordered the carne asada. I told him not possible, I order 1 of 2 things when going to a new Mexican restaurant; chili rellanos or carnitas. I had asked about the rellanos and he said they were rolled and fried tortilla shells. It didn't sound like a rellano to me to I went with the carnita option. It gets better. At this point my wife asks for the manager and the waiter, I wish I had gotten his name, made a spoofing sound and said the manager was gone but would be back later. The contempt of the waiter did it. We got up to leave. The waiter insisted we had to pay for the tea. It was $3, I tossed 3 bucks on the table and we left. He had forgotten about the guacamole and I wasn't going to remind him. We have all experienced bad service, it happens but an argumentative rude waiter was too much. He was a younger Hispanic guy covered in tattoos. It would be easy to pick him out of a line up with all the ink. Just say no to chilitos. read more

I would give a negative 1000 stars if I could. The absolute WORST meal I have ever had. The service was terrible. We had to get our own napkins, clean off our own table and took 20 mins for a refill. Would have taken longer if I hadn't of gotten up and asked for it. We had a drink spill and had workers all around us and never once did they offer to help us or give us napkins to help clean it up. Once again we had to go hunt for napkins. The fajitas were disgusting.. the chicken was mostly gristle and inedible, the table was disgusting and dirty. Wish I could this a place 0 stars. The worst food my body has ever had to digest. It barely digested. The queso NASTY, if I had to describe it, it would be flavored BURNT VELVEETA CHEESE. The chips had zero salt disgusting. The chicken quesadilla don't even get me started. I thought I was eating my cats wet food. It was literally soaking wet. THE CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP, looked AND tasted like actual vomit and dirty dish water. Honestly, I had to rush to my toilet at home. The hour and 30 minute drive was painful and smelled just like that chicken tortilla soup. I was screaming in pain at the red lights. I barely made it to the bathroom having to clench my cheeks so hard. The only highlight was the LARGEEEE cups aprox. 175 liters.... Peed 4 times on the way home. Oh and the silverware was already dirty, dried queso EVERYWHERE. and there was animals mating on the tv the whole time with country music BLASTING. not to forget an old lady stared us down the whole time and followed us around out of the ATROCIOUS establishment. Like most people have mentioned the food here is terrible. My husband ordered the tamales and within 30 minutes was hanging over the toilet. My soon ordered Machaca and eggs and the eggs were burnt. I ordered nachos with all the toppings and received a pile of chips with ground hamburger meat, essentially no cheese, sour cream, maybe a teaspoon of finely chopped jalapeños and guacamole. Chelito's is located on a rooftop in the very heart of downtown Estes Park - that in itself is kind of fun! A few upgrades on the food and this would be a great restaurant! Service is very good and friendly, and the locale is pretty cute. What is going to disappoint is the food. Start with the chips and salsa - the chips were over salted, almost encrusted in a salt solution. These made you very thirsty, but the margarita was pretty lousy - we could only order house margaritas as there was no bartender on Friday afternoon at lunchtime to make a top shelf specialty margarita. So I imagine we got our Margarita out of a plastic container that was made with sweet-and-sour mix from 1987. We ordered the Pork Carnitas and the Pibil. Both dishes arrived and were very beautiful and colorful served with rice, refried beans, and some veggies and cabbage and so forth. The plating was really nice... One bite of the beans however, absolutely bland no salt or spaces at all, and the sadness began. Moving onto the pork - the Carnitas were Crisp to the point of being dry lacking of flavor, and the Pibil pork was oxidized indicating that it was left over and reheated. The rice was pretty good! I took my leftovers home and fed them to the crow family in my backyard. This is pretty disappointing, and I hope that the kitchen can turn this around with a little bit of seasoning, spice, salt, a good bartender and fresh cooking practices. read more

Up three flights of stairs to get there, hard on us flatlanders, later found out there is an elevator but never saw anyone use it, maybe it doesn't work??? They pretty much insisted on us scanning a QR code for their menu. Reading the menu in this fashion is a PITA. Waitress was difficult to understand. They advertise many vegan options but really not many. I had a vegan taco salad . I must admit the salad was fresh and very good but not really worth the price. My lady had the vegan burger, it too was good. The fries were ok but needed salt. This dish to, was way overpriced ! Avoid this dump. My friend and I came here on a Saturday after finding long lines at other restaurants. We were seated right away and I noticed there weren't many other patrons, so it sent up red flags considering the other restaurants in town were packed. The food here is awful and is an insult to Mexican cuisine. We both ordered $13.00 margaritas and neither one of us tasted any alcohol; I doubt there was any tequila in them. It took well over an hour for our food to arrive, which was odd considering only one other group came in after we did. My friend ordered enchiladas and he said they tasted worse than the frozen ones he buys at Trader Joe's. I ordered tacos al pastor and instead I got fish tacos. The fish looked and tasted like Gorton's fish sticks that had been cut up and tossed into a taco, along with lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. Very bizarre. I've eaten Mexican food throughout the U.S. and all over Mexico and I never tasted anything like this. My first instinct was to address this with the waiter, but it was late and I didn't want to wait another hour for our food to arrive and by this time most other restaurants had stopped serving. So I ate it. There was a large family seated next to us and their kids ran all over, screaming, throwing food at one another, and knocking over chairs while the staff did nothing. So even though the food and drinks sucked, we both just wanted to eat and get out of here. I guess if you're one of those Americans who loves Taco Bell, then you might love this food. Traditional Homemade Mexican food and non-alcoholic beverages. It is not Tex-Mex! Servers love to chat with people, very friendly. I love the chicken fajitas, Chili Rellenos and Chimichangas. The bar puts a little bit more alcohol in per drink. Third floor dining has good views of Estes Park. The outdoor section is unique. Tried this place while we were in town. We were craving Mexican food so walked in. Didn't take long to sit us down at our table. I had the green Chile cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. My partner ordered shredded beef enchiladas but was brought two cheese ones instead. At first our waitress was all smiles until it came to pay our bill. Our bill was $32.00 dollars. We paid with two twenty dollar bills. She picked up our money and asked if we needed change. I had already left a tip on the table so we asked for the change. On the menu it said refried beans which I ordered. All I got was fully formed beans de la Hoya. The rice had a funny taste to it. They must have added some kind of seasoning to it. Been eating Mexican rice all my life and never tasted it like this before. The cheese enchiladas had hardly any cheese in them. Just a big square chunk of melted cheese on top. Vegetarians and vegans - do try this place out ! The food is outstanding. We ordered a veggie fajita - which can be shared by 2 (order extra tortillas if needed). The fajita Came hot and sizzling with onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and jalapeños. Everything was nicely charred and tomatoes added nice juicey punch! The Veggies had very authentic Mexican seasoning and flavor. The tortillas were soft and warm when served. On the side were black bean, rice, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese .. - the quantity of the sides could be more considering its price ($16) They serve complimentary chips and salsa - which were also fresh and super delicious. The outside seating has a wonderful Mountain View. (Although the chairs outside are steel chairs and uncomfortable after sometime) Our waitress was super humble and helpful.
