I've been here twice, and noted several recurring trends with cheap Chinese restaurants, but this place is the exemplar. You han smell the carpet the instant you walk in. Maybe they dont make that horrid shade of crimson anymore. They haven't heard of steam cleaning- you can still rent them at grocery stores, ya know. The next thing I noticed was the large counter, which was heaped high with magazines, newspapers, phonebooks, etc. I had made the right decision in calling in the order the first time. They have some dinner specials for $6 , and larger portions for $2 more. The first carryout order I made was their Mongolian Beef. I asked them to make it spicy, but that only resulted in 4-5 raw jalapeno slices tossed into the meat on the grill. That's not spicy. The second time, I ordered their hot & sour shrimp, and told them to make it very spicy. The shrimp were breaded & fried, then sauteed in a sweet & sour sauce (not that red crap you dip egg rolls in) that they dropped a bunch of split, rehydrated cayenne or arbol chiles. Worst experience ever! The customer service here is deplorable. After receiving my order after 1 hour, I opened my box to find that my egg foo young patties were burned and inedible. I was shocked because I had ordered from them a few other times and the egg foo young was good. I called to let management know and was told that someone would come to collect the patties so that they could send more. I said that is fine, after waiting another 30-40 minutes, I received a call from management where their response was, " We will not recook your order because they felt that the patties were not burned." I informed the manager that this was poor customer service and to just refund my order. They will never have my business again. read more

1st of all I must point out that the restaurant choices in BCS area are mediocre. We have tried many places and always have a difficult time deciding where to go out. We really like Dim Sum and 'authentic' Chinese food but you will not find this in BCS area. Every Chinese place in BCS area we tried uses too much MSG. You can request for your order not to have MSG at this restaurant but many items are pre-made with MSG already added. The food is quite tasty, for the area, even without the MSG. We especially enjoyed the Chef's specialty in a Taro basket (CS location only). As for clean facilities: we tried both locations (Bryan and CS)... CS: failry clean but we feel really bad for the fish in the dirty fish tank. On the way in and out it always makes me sad and also wonder how clean or dirty the kitchen is. The back of the restaurant, which is easily seen from the road, looks a bit dirty too. Bryan location: dark,industrial lighting, and very sticky floors. Service and food just OK. Did not enjoy this location at all. It felt like they were saving $ on electricity (and we are for that) but it was a bit too warm and stuffy too. I recently moved here and i love Chinese food and this was right down the street from my place, so I decided to try it out. I went in on a Thursday night was slow. The waitress was fast and nice and extremely helpful. I ordered the sesame chicken and it was excellent! Then a few days later i ordered beef and broccoli and they delivered it to my apt and that to was awesome. In closing i haven't ate at any other Chinese restaurant in college station yet. *This review is for certain dishes and not a reflection of the restaurant in general* Ill be upfront. I have had way better Chinese food in other parts of the world than at Chef Cao's. The aroma wafting from the restaurant is what drew me to this restaurant in the first place. Sad to say my olfactory senses betrayed me (to an extent). The restaurant is nice and comfortable and the server was courteous and helpful as he knew it was my first time. After spending 15 minutes deciding the perfect new dish for me, I settled on the shrimp with "lobster sauce" along with an egg roll, hot and sour soup and fried rice. 1. The soup had no flavor. It tasted a lot of soy sauce, but that's it. 2. The egg roll, recommended by the server, was infact eggless. My futile attempt to search for egg in a sea of cabbage ended when I hit the ...well the end of the roll. One positive though was that the coating is really thin and crispy! LIKE!!! 3. The dinner special, the Shrimp in lobster sauce failed in its attempt to live up to the regal name. I have never had this dish before, so i cant compare, but my taste buds rejected it in the first bite. It was bland, bad combination of ingredients ( the water chestnuts so not going with the dish) and all in all just summing up a bad day at the restaurant. Will I go back for another meal??? Average Chinese food with huge portions and low prices. Lunch specials are substantial portions and the average price is $6-7. The pork dumplings were the best I have ever had. Fried rice was average. Lettuce wraps were slightly better than average. The portion size was crazy huge and could have easily been a meal for someone. The spring rolls were better than average but probably because I liked their peanut sauce. The shrimp with lobster sauce was good but nothing special. My daughter's mongolian steak was good. They use jalapeños instead of the traditional green onions. My husband's chicken curry was just alright-- nothing to write home about. All that said, our server was super attentive and we were in and out quickly so that's a huge plus. All in all, I would go back but would order way less food for three people. The only reason I go to any restaurants in town is because usually I'll find one certain selection or dish that I like and I will get that. Chef Caos is a step up from the chinese restaurants back in my hometown, which while growing up I thought was delicious. The only reason I eat there is for the combination fried rice spicy number 4... make it spicy it's sooo good, add extra beef. Their eggrolls aren't too bad either, just a bit pricey. Their service is understandable if you're not arrogant and ignorant. I'm a server so i have patience for service. People in BCS think too highly of themselves and believe that service has to be phenomenal when it comes to ethnic places to eat. As long as I get my food and it's the way I ordered it, I'm fine! Chef Cao's has become a bit of an institution in BCS as it has continued to last. If you polled folks here, its probably the one they'd identify the most quickly. Maddeningly and annoyingly, they perpetuate an unwelcome cliche: serve sub-standard, greasy, fat and protein heavy, low-vegetable "Chinese-American" fare to customers, while presumably having the "secret Chinese menu" for another set of customers. I've noticed on more than one occasion that the food served to the latter clientele looks far more interesting and appetizing than that served up to the former. Why not just have a menu with the "authentic" food available for all? Puzzling really. And so my experiences have been with the basic stuff--kung pao this or that, Hunan this or that--under-seasoned, unbearably greasy, and just not that enjoyable. I know there is better food here, and maybe some day I'll figure out the secret password to get it. In the mean time I'll go to Shun de Mom Express, and continue to enjoy interesting and authentic fare that's available and accessible to ALL. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$$. One positive note: delivery was on time. I ordered the spring rolls which are just bland noodles with a tiny half sliver of shrimp and a pinch of cilantro. This was the best part of the meal. I had the wonton soup, the wontons looked like cicadias when I fished them out. Pros: eggdrop soup was good. Wine portion is almost double what it should be. Cons: looks like family owned and that would be a great thing, except that they were constantly fighting and shouting. Even as we were paying they were shouting in their language. The roasted duck was so roasted that it was charred. Super salty and super burnt. The broccoli was very very bitter. I am Chinese. So hopefully my review will help. Overall, I think Chef Cao's is the best Chinese restaurant in college station if you are looking for Chinese food that suits Chinese people's taste. They have two menus, one in English and one in Chinese. I don't know what is on their English menu, my bf says it is a little different. I have a friend who ordered one of those americanized dishes (kung pao chicken, sesame beef, etc,) and he thought it was pretty good. From my experiences with their dishes on the Chinese menu ( we usually order salt and pepper shrimp, beef brisket, sichuan spicy fish, etc.) They are all very tasty, like something you will get from a Chinese restaurant in Houston Chinatown. It is far from Chinese food in New York, but it is CS. I think they are doing a great job. I do think they are better at making Chinese dishes instead of americanized dishes. And according to my bf, this Chef Cao tastes better than Chef Cao II. If you like real Chinese food you should definitely give this place a try. Oh.. they do use a good amount of MSG, and their food is on the salty side. Whenever we order veggie dishes we always tell them less oil and less salt. read more

Absolutely TERRIBLE experience. We got take-out from this establishment for the first time and got 2 orders of their Pad Thai. After only a few bites of my pad thai, I found a short black curly hair in my food. Disgusted, we called and calmly explained to them what we found and requested an exchange of the entree. Once we got back to the restaurant, with the hair and remainder of pad Thai in hand, the owner very rudely refused to exchange the entree and was demanding that we pay full price for the new entree. After quarreling with him, he was only agreeing to offer 10% off on a future purchase. The owner was not at all apologetic or surprised about a costumer finding hair in their food! However, the food may have a little too much MSG because I get quite thirsty after leaving the restaurant. Chef Cao's is my favorite Chinese restaurant in College Station. Sometimes I will go to Jin's instead, but I like this place a lot better. I like that they are good at cooking more authentic Chinese food but also have some Americanized dishes on the menu. My favorite dish is the Honey Walnut Chicken, although be careful! I'm pretty sure that dish packs a load of calories. Also, delivery is not as good as the food they serve you in the restaurant for some reason. We ordered the Kung Pao tofu and the pan seared noodles with tofu. The tofu was awful. It was nothing but moosh smothered in a brown sauce that was not even tasteful. Having been to china, this is amazing food. Regardless of what he others say, they may be looking for Americanized Chinese food. This was voted one of the top 100 in the nation Chinese restaurants and I understand why. They give all meat, which is quite American, but it tastes as it would in the people's republic. You will not walk away from this place disappointed. Take it slow and order what the Chinese would order. I am not big on tofu, but hey I know some of you are.
