We signed our daughter up for what we thought was going to be a fun "camp" - where she could have fun with other girls her age and do something she has always wanted to do - cheer! She begged for us to sign her up the day she got the flyer at school and she counted down the days until camp started. On the first day, she was out of bed before any of us; dressed & ready to go! And this continued for the next 3 days. On the final day, parents were allowed to come & watch all that the girls had learned and be present for the award ceremony - which on the flyer was described as "Spirit sticks and special awards will be given for a job well done." It should have read "The same 5 girls will receive the trophies and awards in all age categories - the rest will receive red ribbons". This camp turned out to be a COMPETITION camp, - not a place to go and have fun. At the "Awards Ceremony" - the group of girls my daughter was a part of, was called up to the table and each girl had their name announced one by one, and was given a red Spirit Ribbon - well, all girls EXCEPT my daughter. Just IMAGINE for a second the look on my daughters face as she walked back to sit down and was the ONLY girl with NOTHING in her hand and her name NEVER announced. The teenager announcing names messed something up, so they brought the girls BACK up and AGAIN, my daughter was the ONLY name not announced and the ONLY girl sent back to sent down empty handed. My heart was in a MILLION pieces and so was my 7 year old daughters. They finally realized their mistake and handed my daughter a red ribbon. When we got in the car, the first words out of her mouth were "They only gave this to me because they felt bad. Everyone else had their name on the back and mine doesn't." I explained to her that she was strong & it could have happened to another little girl - but then that little girl would be sad and my daughter didn't like to know someone else would be heartbroken. My daughters drive and desire to be a cheerleader was ruined by this Cheer Camp. She'll eventually get over it - like we all got over things that happened to us when we were kids. But in the moment she walked back empty handed, that look I will never get over. With a little more organization, hopefully this can be prevented in the future to another little girl. read more
