Although not incredibly expensive, prices are sufficient for me to expect better than average food and service (that said my brother thinks I've been living in the USA too long and my service expectations are too high for the UK...) I ordered a special for the day we visited, topside roast beef with seasonal vegetable accompaniments. The beef was cut rather thick, which is either generous and rustic or, as my grandmother with extensive food service would have said, completely wrong (beef thin, lamb thick, pork in between...) I also would have preferred the meat a little rarer, but despite the apparently longer cooking time it was tender and flavorful. The vegetables were generally good; could perhaps have been cooked a little less for a firmer bite but that's certainly open to a range of preferences. The Yorkshire pudding was overly-crispy for my tastes, and with the gravy already poured (a separate boat would have been nice) was hard to rescue. The one item that was really disappointing though was the courgettes (others in my party with those on there plate agreed). They appeared to have been cooked in an olive with strong vegetal/pungent/sharp/bitter tones to it. It would seem the oil was not hot when it met the courgettes and they have a tendency under such circumstances to soak up oil leaving them tasting rather funky. One wonders if they were taste tested in the kitchen... My wife ordered a risotto of some kind which she felt was lacking salt (unusual for my wife so probably true). Desserts were well received -- didn't have one myself but they looked good and were said to be good and tasty. Service seemed well intentioned but I found it odd that we had all three of the waitresses visit us for different things at various times -- this did not appear to enhance the level of service but rather to leave them all confused as to what stage of the meal we were at. We received multiple queries on things such as whether or not we had ordered drinks, starters, dessert, etc.

Half diner, half greasy spoon it's an amazing throwback to 1950's neon Baltimore mixed with 1970's British pie house grime. It has the buzzing signs, chrome, guitars on the ceiling and a juke box replete with Neil Sedaka, Frank Sinatra, Presley and the king himself Buddy Holly. It also has an ill fitting bakery counter, chain wine bar shelving and tables and chairs straight from a working man's club. The menu is disappointingly mainstream -more greasy spoon than sloppy joe. Sam's however is a place with huge potential. Sam's is a concept that is yet to be fully realised. Given a minimal makeover, an American counter, some rounded brightly coloured diner style furnishings, a soda fountain, a short order chef and a complete menu overhaul Sam's could be a shining chromefied beacon in this town. Sam's is a bar awaiting discovery and begging for a definitive style of its own. While it is patiently waiting, go there for the jukebox and the possibilities alone.

The food stuffs were great, but the bread probably could have had just a little less than a tub of butter on it (I could see my friend's arteries clogging while we chatted over breakfast). I had the Lorraine quiche, which was lovely. The cole slaw, though, was not edible because there was so much mayonnaise. The pastries looked amazing - I definitely will have to try one of those next time - maybe for cream tea or something like that (since the scones looked spectacular). The coffee was EXTRA large - I'd suggest not getting the large if you're not planning to be near a bathroom for a while. The main thing about this place is the view - right there on the sea. The parking lot is of decent size, but you can always park on the street. Even during the winter the place gets packed up, so be sure to grab yourself a table first thing you do when you walk in the door - THEN order. Silly set up for sure, but it is what it is.
