It's a great tourist attraction, but sadly it has become very commercialized given the number of souvenir shops along the road. The "guards" that were there were a cute touch, but did not appreciate my being an American. It's something to check out when you're in Berlin, but I wouldn't spend more than 10 minutes at this attraction. read more

Definitely cheesy and kitschy but also definitely necessarily for anyone who wants to cover all essential tourist locations, especially if you have any interest in Cold War history. The Stasi museum is also nearby and excellent. read more

Well... It's certainly overrated and it's not even much to look at. Everything here seemed far too commercialised. This reminds me of something you'd see in New York City. Sure, people can pose for a picture with the 'guards' but other than that... Well... Nothing. There's much better things to see in Berlin, don't go out of your way to see Checkpoint Charlie. read more

The two "soldiers" manning the gate were very comical and accommodating of all pictures. What a way to introduce such an important time of history. The museum is incredible and dumps out into a gift shop that is actually worth looking around. read more

I suppose I should add my review, I would definitely see this if it's a first trip to Berlin, mainly for its historical significance. That being said, the post now is nothing more then a tourist trap. Guards stand there, and if you want for a euro or two you can take a picture with them. Since they aren't real guards I'm not sure you'd want to but I guess it makes for a cute picture of your Berlin vacation complete with McDonald's as a backdrop. The good thing is there are a lot museums near here. The topography of terror is real close, definitely a must see, and that one is free. And the checkpoint Charlie museum which is by donation is worth a look. There's a lot to see in the area in general. Which is why I give it four stars, otherwise I'd give 2 or 3. read more

When in Berlin, you can't really make your trip complete without at least passing by Checkpoint Charlie, the famous border control point between the former East and West Germany. As other reviewers mentioned, there isn't much actually to see, so a walk past it is enough! You can make a long walk to see the Brandenburg Gate. While I was there in September 2014, they also had an exposition close by, which explained the history of Berlin after WWII and had various interesting bits to read regarding the wall and split of the city. read more

I was so excited to learn more about the wall and the history of the times whilst visiting Berlin. This museum was a sore disappointment. I literally learned more on the street outside of the museum which had a construction partition set up with placards describing the events leading up to, contraction of and the eventual fall of the wall. Don't pay for admittance to the museum unless you have a deep understanding of what happened. The museum has a few bells and whistles that would be good for a big history buff, but mostly it's poorly loud out, not well ventilated and full of noisy, smelly, careless student groups who are bored on field trips. For the best knowledge of the wall and its history, just look around the checkpoint for the various placards. read more

Has significance but has become a capitalised tourist gift shop trap. Shame. Fast food restaurants round about ruin chances of a decent photo opportunity. read more

It s good. Nothing major. You can take a picture with two actors that are soldiers. It s just to show where checkpoint Charlie was during the time that Berlin was divided in two. read more

Checkpoint Charlie is quite an anti climax. A point in a the middle of the rood of a bustling ligh street. Tourists loitering around everywhere. Between the traffic and the tourists it's impossible to get close or even get a good view. Don't waste your snaps, there are much better attractions around Berlin than this. not my favourite attraction. read more

Huge tourist trap--who actually gets their passport stamped here? For me it would be a stamp that would have been impossible to get as I was born after the wall was made ineffective. I'd give it 1 star, but it is really historical. You can learn a lot (at a price) in the museum or other cheaper museums. I, along with many others it seems, thought I would learn something at this spot, but it just seems like a place to get a picture taken. read more

You can't visit Berlin without seeing check point Charlie and the museum. One of the most famous places from the last century. See where the USA and Russia faced off over east Germany until the wall came down. So much history. All be it a horrible history. read more

The crossing point between East and West Germany during the Cold War sadly turned into a tourist trap. History now surrounded by souvenir shops. It's still a place you'll want to visit, take a couple of pictures and move on. It's noting exciting. read more

For it's historic value, it is a must-see. The thing is that there's not much to been seen. But I had to go anyway. It is in a busy street and besides take the pic of that pic of the infamous soldier, you can go to the "military station" and play tourist. Just walk by and it is grand: you can tick it on your must-see list =) read more

Cool spot to check out while in Berlin. There is also a museum & gift shop for the Checkpoint. No photos allowed on the inside of the museum though..bummer. read more

Nice to see but was a little disappointed. I later found out that soldiers standing there are not real. They are actors and if you want a photograph you need to pay a fee. You can take a picture of them from a little distance but you can't be next to them. If you go to see this don't miss the museum of Checkpoint Charlie, otherwise don't bother with just seeing the spot. They do have a small exhibit outdoors nearby about the wall. They must change it around. If went a few times on different trips and it was not the same. read more

I enjoyed seeing this site as it is so famous and known the world over. There isn't a lot to actually SEE, however and it does get very busy. Our hotel was just around the corner so it was nice to walk and pass by it on a daily basis while in Berlin. The museum located nearby is the main attraction for me - it is a history of the wall and is eye-opening and enlightening. The museum looks like it'll be small from the outside, but don't be fooled! It can take a long time to look around but is well worth it. We often saw this area in the evening as well, when going back to our hotel. This is a great time to have a second look around and think, as there is next to nobody about later on. It's definitely a must-see, due to the historical significance of the area, but don't expect to spend a lot of time here. Maybe grab a coffee afterwards! read more

This is a version of Times Square in NYC. I found it very disrespectful of people dressing up in the American uniform, whom are not in the military. In addition, taking pictures with tourists and letting them wear their pieces of the uniform. read more

I don't even know where to begin here. Should I start with the rude young man clearly not enjoying his job selling tickets? Or what about the crazy old woman managing the toilets for a fee (which is beyond me, as we had already paid for the admission). Or the fact that they charge you 2€ extra if you want to take a picture of any part of the exhibition? They somehow managed to make a fascinating story incredibly boring by just putting up huge boards of textbook material for you to read. If I wanted to read my way through this bit of history, I think I'd have preferred to do it in my own house where at least the toilet is free!! read more

Its been a while since I have been in Berlin, we used to go this place in the winter we spent there, ir was so cold, the Museum had some great artifacts from people going over the wall, I did get food poisoning at the Reichstag but thats another story... read more

I went to this place on my fifth time in Berlin, mainly to show it to a German friend who had never been there. We had our passports stamped with a DDR stamp, he took pictures, and we had some cheap kebab around there. There is so much more to do in Berlin than this. read more

Overly touristy and kitschy. The real checkpoint Charlie was down the road and quite the facility and crossing, heavely guarded and armed. It has since been torn down completely. So to have this booth built essentially to be representative, seemed sort of a fail to me. While it was fun, the guards were hilarious and entertaining, being able to get 6 stamps in your passport was cool. The museum was excellent and worth it. read more

Definitely a waste of your time if you're visiting. It's all fake and commercialized and the actors are just making a mockery of the whole thing. You're much better off going to museums or taking a tour and learning the history rather than spending money on fake photos. Also the stamps are fake and are technically not allowed in your passport and could cause complications down the road. read more

Historic. Great. A must see spot on any trip to Berlin. Short walk to other monuments and memorials

Its definitely a tourist trap but its something you have to see when you visit Berlin.. Enjoy being a tourist and take a picture in front of the sign or with the actor hanging around. I wouldn't suggest skipping it since the Cold War is such an important part of Berlin's history. read more

It's interesting that they decided to keep this area the same, but it has become sort of a tourist trap. Long queue when we were there was certainly not worth it. Corny passport stamps seem to a be draw. I would simply walk around and look at it, but wouldn't wait in any lines. read more

So, writing this review with mixed feelings. I was so excited about visiting Checkpoint Charlie when in Berlin, as had read my Dad's cold war novels while growing up. But the reality is different and I guess am a bit disappointed that the area has became so commercialized and nothing has survived of the tension I can still vividly recall from those Tom Clancy books. The were a great sort of street museum that talked about the history, and had great photos... but... I dont know. It was just sorta an overall disappointing experience... but am still glad I went. read more

Sad, what they have done to this famous landmark. Nothing original remains other than a single sign. The last remnant of the wall is about a block away. They even have hired actors dressed as soldiers standing around, waiting for photo ops, for which they charge 5 Euros. I went across the real Checkpoint Charlie in 1971. This is such a poor rendition of what it was like. It was obviously less than I expected from such a once memorable experience in my life. read more

It's kind of uneventful! There a few "solders" here taking photos and stamping your passport with East Berlin. US Passport holders should be weary, my tour guide says that a few of his American friend were questions and their passports confiscated due to the illegal stamps. The "solders" are supposedly porn stars according to my tour guide and will pose in picture with you for a few euros. The signs posted on the side of the road are the originals but very well maintained. As in typical American fashion once you enter the former American Sector there is a McDonalds, haha! read more
