I went to this place, hoping for a place that would be a good starting point for making Asian -- primarily Chinese / Vietnamese -- vegan food, ideally at a place that takes CalFresh / EBT. (There are a LOT of vegetarian Vietnamese in the Bay Area, due to the influence of Supreme Master Ching Hai, etc... but actually finding)
I asked whether they had vegan broths, and they said not any more... but I found they did have a mushroom broth, albeit only one container, and something called imitation chicken flavored broth, which *seemed* vegan. But both were a bit sketchy and understocked. They probably won't reorder. They also didn't have things like dried noodle, etc. Seems to me that they tried to specialize a bit, but just aren't succeeding at getting the traffic and attention to make it happen.
I left under-impressed, but went about two blocks away to Dai Lee Food at 787 Washington, and found that they not only took CalFresh, but also had my favorite vegetarian bouillon mix... Harvest Chicken Flavor, which is gluten free and made from yeast extract. Less expensive than the other broths. They also stocked a diverse mix of dried noodles, from rice to wheat to Korean yam noodles, dried tofu skin "knots" for soups, dried fried tofu for a different textured snack, dried shitake mushrooms, etc. So much of their success could simply be due to having a larger store, located nearer to Stockton Street, which is the main drag for grocery shopping in Chinatown.
Vegan soups are now on the menu, as well as vegan "chicken" fried rice, etc.! read more
