This would complete our goal of seeing every AAA baseball team in the United States. We bought tickets several months in advance. The day of the game, it rained. The Redbirds postponed their game to the following day. But there was no way we could stay in Memphis an extra day, especially not on Easter Sunday when we had plans back home. Attempting to get a refund, or at least a credit so we could come back at a later date to watch the Redbirds, they flat out refused to help us. We were told that if we couldn't come back on Easter Sunday, we've just lost those tickets. DO NOT buy tickets to an event at AutoZone Park, lest the event be cancelled or moved only for you to lose your money. It's a serious gamble, especially if you're driving a long distance only to receive nothing in return.

If you are tired of traditional dance lessons and aerobic classes but want a fun way to exercise,…read moretry salsa. Don't worry about having a partner because someone will step in. Alex Labrador, who is Filipino, started giving salsa lessons and it grew into Salsa Memphis. Salsa Memphis is lucky to have Edgar Mendez, originally from LA as an instructor. Now, Salsa Memphis offers plenty of opportunities for people to try it. You can opt for lessons at their dance studio on mt. moriah. The lessons are about a hour to a hour and half and are $12 a lesson or you can buy a pack of 4 lessons for 40 bucks. Beginner lessons are on Mondays. You do need to wear shoes that have slick ,smooth soles so it will be easier to spin. Also, I would recommend a towel because you will work up quite a sweat. The first part of the lesson is usually individual footwook where the basic steps are reviewed. Edgar breaks it down slowly so everyone understands the steps. Then he will use the steps to make a dance routine. The dance routine will actually help you because you use the steps learned in your routine with a partner. As for partners, you initially select a partner but then you will stand in a circle and rotate. Therefore, you learn to dance with different people--some who will have more salsa skills than others. All in all, it is quite a workout. If you want to see what salsa lessons will result in, go to High Point Cafe in the Pinch on Saturday night about 11pm. All the advanced dancers are there and they put on quite a show. You can go earlier and get a free beginner salsa lesson with your 6 dollar admission (it will be $10 if there is a live band). Mostly, they play salsa, meringue and bachata music. People who salsa are quite diverse in size, shape, and nationalities and they are all very nice to beginners. Don't be surprised if you see local news personalities or college athletes there. Want to get out of the house and do something different, check out the salsa memphis website and give salsa a try.

I was at their first pick your own Friday night event. Kimberly was our lovely table assistant who…read moredirected us on what to do next while another main director gave directions to all 3 tables. When I arrived we were given aprons to put on. It's a BYOB establishment. We checked our stencils they pre-print to make sure it is correct spelling and what we wanted. First we were told to sand our wood the edges and everywhere with the grain. Then brushed off the saw dust. We picked our stains, which I chose Jacobean since it was dark and natural looking we let them dry when we were done staining(the thinner the stain the better we were told). I chose white paint for my letters with a barn red accent for lines under my name. After that dried I requested to wax it which makes it look slightly aged instead of bright white and the grain comes through. We put the hooks on the back on and I was done. Everything was very simple if you're scared it'll be too much. Some projects have multiple boards and you use a power tool to screw them together but it's very simple and they help you if you need it. At the very end they gave me a punch card which says after the 5th time the 6th is free and took my photo and I was on my way. Reading Kyle's five-star review months ago was the first time I knew about the Center For Southern…read moreFolklore and I was intrigued, but for some reason it was put on the back burner, until I realized the Mayan Apocalypse is approaching. From their website, I found out a girls Jookin' contest would be held at the center one Friday evening and decided to see it for myself, having heard about the style from a dance show (no, it's not Dancing With The Stars). I didn't realize Jookin' was Memphis-born and most dancers are males. Despite starting almost an hour later than scheduled and being slightly disorganized (understandably, as an amateur contest), it was a fun event with a great community feel. As far as my inexperienced eyes could tell, some girls have the potential to "make it" in the Jookin' world. As a first-timer, I found the layout of this place a little confusing. The Jookin' contest was held in the hall, which is at the end of the hallway if you enter from the Belz Museum (another gem!) entrance off Main Street and you will also find a refreshment concession there, but that's not where they sell the peach cobbler raved by a previous reviewer, at least not that evening. The peach cobbler (which unfortunately did not impress me), along with gifts, works of art, a limited selection of food and drinks (including beers), is sold at the store off Main Street two doors down from the Belz entrance. The store is also where they normally host live-music events. As soon as I stepped inside the colorful, funky store, I was sold, so I dragged the hubby there the very next evening for the Deering & Down performance, despite knowing very little about them (yes, we had been living under a rock). As a music venue the store holds about 40 seats -- including a few tables and a few rows of seats -- plus some standing room. It's casual and intimate, setting the stage for an enjoyable evening. But it turned out to be more than enjoyable. It was exhilarating thanks to the knockout performance by the duo (plus special guests) who rocked their hearts out for almost three hours non-stop. Live music doesn't get much better than this! The ticket prices are very very affordable ( a mere $5 for Deering & Down!). The crowd is a mix of locals and out-of-towners. In fact, a business woman from NYC at the table next to ours also went to see the Jookin' contest like I did the night before and was thoroughly impressed. In short, you owe yourself a visit! If the world still stands after tomorrow.

Actually, I saw John Paul Keith & the 145's for the first time there & feel in love with their music, instantly. In addition to the festival, the Center has some unique gifts. They sell everything from t-shirts, postors, local art, local food (Rendezvous spicy popcorn, ugly mug coffee & sometimes - when you're lucky - local honey), and random, quirky souvenirs. I ventured to here for their brown bag lunch & music today. It's a great opportunity to check out someone new (to me). The inside of the store has a funky design; plenty of bright colors. There's a stage with colorful screen doors as a backdrop. It gives the audience a feeling of watching someone strumming the guitar on their front porch. It's just missing the rocking chairs. They sell beer, so you can have a cold one while listening to some down home music. Also, they have cobbler & a couple of southern inspired sundaes, like pecan pie. Yum!

Then told me to send someone in my place, however when I tried to send a friend they then told me they didn't make my piece so I forfeited my spot.
