We were referred to Dr. McKoy by Dr. Rex Morgan (also excellent--see review). We moved a couple of…read morefamily members from vulnerable populations to South Carolina after the death of another member of the family. This patient hasn't had medical care in years, has moderate cognitive and substantial short term memory issues, and didn't know how to navigate support systems. Dr. Morgan has been helping us identify specialists to deal with his laundry list of medical needs. One of the most important aspects of care, especially with vulnerable individuals, is to treat the patient with dignity and respect. Dr. McKoy addressed our patient directly and has crafted a plan to deal with his issues. He has a care team to support our preparation for surgery and to help our family member and us through the process. I feel like we're in really good hands. One final note. Dr. McKoy is a person of faith, and asked if he could pray in advance of surgery and right then. He paused and offered a prayer in the moment. Why is this important? Haven't we all been seen by a medical practitioner who was arrogant and less than supportive at some point? No matter how brilliant they might be, their demeanor is painful. Frankly, I believe it's critical to have skilled providers who are able to engage with their patients on a human level. Dr. McKoy is an excellent example of such a practitioner.

On 3/21/2017 Dr. McKoy gave me a complete hip replacement. I am a Religious man myself, and when Dr. McKoy asked to pray with me for The Lord to care for me as the patient, and to guide his hands throughout the surgery, it became obvious that he was a man of faith and conviction, and one who practiced what he preached! For me, when putting my life in someone else's hands, I want them to be the hands of a Person with the integrity of a Dr. McKoy. (Parking in the tower is $3 with an appointment.) On the date of my appointment, the receptionists were kind and caring. The neurology floor lobby is freshly updated, modern, spacious, and clean. The nurse and neurologist spent an adequate amount of time with me to truly hear my concerns before developing a plan. So far, I am impressed with MUSC's neurology.

I wish I could provide a five star review for MUSC Neurology department - sadly, I cannot and will…read morenot. My personal experience with the Nurse Practitioner, Katie Smith, was positive but I cannot say the same for many on her staff. Instead of keeping me up to date and informed in a timely on my tests results, along with, providing accurate information, weeks would go by without a returned phone call. When I could get someone on the phone they were more often than not, unapologetic and rude. My requests for basic info re: my care went unanswered for weeks on end - not a returned phone call or email. Imagine being unable to reach anyone at your physicians office when you are in pain and need medication or would like test results and you are told "someone will get back to you" and, yet, no one does. I was warned that MUSC Neurology was difficult to deal with - I wish I had listened - It would have saved me alot of stress. Bottom line: I felt unimportant and that I was a bother --my needs were not a priority.
