Did I mention that I love my dentist? That every time I leave happy? I do and I do. Case in point - once upon a time the good doctor removed my wisdom teeth (now it all makes sense, yes?). The remaining two teeth, actually, as I was previously so wise I elected to have the first two removed in grad school and saved the others to have extracted some time in the future. I remember vaguely through the haze of the anesthetic that I had the best dentist ever. The happiness endured even after the procedure was finished. Apparently on my way out I bought a fake diamond stud for my ear in the jewelry store downstairs. Apparently I was on such a cloud nine instead of taking me home my ride elected to treat me to the O'Farrell. I have a fuzzy memory of watching a shower show in my pajama bottoms. With my cheeks full of cotton. Drooling a little more than the fellow at the table to my left. Those were the days. On my return visit the jewelry store was happy to take the earring back, even though they have a policy of no returns on things you stick in your ear. They said the day before I was very, very high, and they were pretty sure that what I had procured would not suit my fancy once I came down. They were so right. Five stars to them. I've been faithful to Dr. Mohn. Not that he gives me any reason to not be. Anecdotes aside, he's been there for me when I needed him. He cares and is caring. He's reasonably priced. I had been to many dentists over the years, Always wondered what they did and if I needed the work. I met Dr Mohn in the early seventies and have been seeing him since. I have he is a great dentist, and I have to agree. He does very good work and does not do unnecessary work. I was refered to Dr. Mohn in the year 2007. I went to Dr. Mohn to have a flossing surface between two fillings adjusted, to find out I had cavity decay on the bordering molar surfaces and would need a new filling. After I had the filling done with Dr. Mohn, I felt pain and was told it would take a day for the pain to settle down. A week later I was still experiencing pain and investigated my hard to see back teeth and found an open crack in between the filling and my tooth exposed, large enough to stick a tooth pick in it. I called Dr. Mohn's office and told them the filling was faulty. I was scheduled to have a temporary "sedentary" temporary filling, to calm down my tooth's nerves since he already drilled close to the pulp. I was loaded up with so much novacaine that when I got home I felt sick to my stomach and had to sleep off the numbness, for the next day. My face was puffed up and somewhat bruised, and I'm usually not sensitive to dental sedatives at all. I was later scheduled to have the sedentary filling replaced with an amalgam filling as suggested over the first 'faulty tooth colored' filling. I was told that amalgam would be a stronger material and that both the faulty filling and a previous resin filling (that I had no problems with at all) be redone in amalgam. After the 2 fillings were filled, I immediately felt like a heavy metal slug had been put in my mouth. My fillings felt flat as though I had one long tooth, instead of two separate teeth. I started to experience TMJ, as my jaw (does) not fit properly on my left side of my mouth due to these flat fillings. I now grind my teeth in my sleep to find that all my teeth on my left side of my mouth have no balance with my right side of my mouth. When I called Dr. Mohn to tell him the fillings were flat, and that it hurt when my top teeth touched the lower teeth. I was told "Your teeth shouldn't touch ever, don't let your teeth touch, except when eating". No, you don't get - my teeth don't fit together anymore. I was then told I had "flat dental anatomy" to begin with. When I said my teeth were in pain and were grinding away other areas of my teeth because of my fillings being too short, I was simply told it was because I was a "tooth grinder". I don't understand how a dentist can say that using measurements such as "microns" , are of importance in dentistry then not practice that perfection. After having 2 (aftercare) appointments since I found the fillings to be uncomfortable, I tried to politely request the fillings be repaired a 3rd time. I even waited a long time to return to the office or to complain as I really didn't want to deal with anymore doubt and negative energy from Dr. Mohn or his dental assistant. Somehow I was told that everything I was feeling physically and emotionally with my teeth was wrong, and that as the professional he knew what was best for my teeth. I returned to this dentist to give him another chance to repair what was wrong. I was shown the door with an air of confidence from Dr. Mohn, his dental assistant, and his receptionist and was told to "go somewhere else". I am happy I stuck through with my complaints and didn't back down, I gave him a fair and lengthy amount of time to repair the discomfort - even if it resulted in a root canal or having a crown placed on the teeth. So if you ever wondered what classical dentistry was like in the trenches during World War, with a Grandpa-like-figure as a dentist that calls you "Kiddo" and tells you to "suck it up", then I highly recommend Dr. Mohn. Besides that I think he's about ready for his retirement? It took me a long time to write this review, and I am now ready to trust another dentist with my teeth. read more

one of my closest friends is a dental technician. he knows a ton of doctors since he's been working in the field for over 2 decades so he's always referring me to the better dentists. he told me that dr. mohn is one of the least picky doctors in terms of quality. his preps are terrible, so if you're looking to get a new crown, you'll be lucky if you get a good fit. one time, he told my technician friend to make a bridge for a 80+ year old patient. when my buddy asked him questions about the design, the doctor told him that it didn't matter because the guy was real old...suggesting that he didn't have much longer to live anyways. he said he's a very charismatic and friendly guy, but a real schmuck. read more

It's all about the money to this dental practice. How much can they make from you? I was referred by a dear friend, who has been going to him for years. I told him that I had seen another dentist, and was wary about the decision to need a filling. I was told the Dr. Mohn needed to see me first for an overall visit, and then decide, as opposed to look at the films. It took at least 2-3 weeks to even come to this conclusion. I didn't get a good feel. So, I went to my dentist to get the filling. Unfortunately, I am still having issues. I went back, but still no good. I just called Dr. Mohn's office to see if he would see me. Their response was ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. "We are sorry, but Dr. Mohn isn't interested if it's just shaving the tooth again". I am like, well, I don't know what the situation is, but I am looking for help. "We don't do that". AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. NO BUENO. read more

I was referred to Dr. Mohn by my awesome dentist of 15 years down in Palo Alto (Dr Watters). Dr Mohn has done a wonderful job helping me take care of my teeth, including fillings, crowns, and even making a detailed survey of gum recession on each individual tooth (yes, all of them). He is warm, friendly and personable, something I haven't always found in doctors (of many professions). I just hope he doesn't retire soon. You've got plenty of good years left, Doc! read more

Dr. Mohn and his staff are adorable. From the moment I stepped into their 26th-floor office at 450 Sutter, I was greeted and received with warmth, friendliness and helpfulness. Dr. Mohn's sense of humor makes a great difference to the experience of going to the dentist. In addition to that, his work is absolutely excellent. Today, I had my permanent crown planted and there is no way anyone could tell it is any different from my own. I could not recommend Dr. Mohn's practice highly enough. After going to dentist after dentist, finding these docs that want to do unnecessary dental work, it was a breath of fresh air to find Dr. Mohn. I have been going to Dr. Mohn for a few years now. He has never suggested any radical procedure that I felt I didn't need. He even tells you he doesn't believe in unnecessary work. I had a situation with a tooth that was "on the fence" with needing work, as it was slightly sensitive. He suggested we keep an eye on it, and it the pain subsided soon after, and I didn't get any work on it. The front desk people are great too. I have to pay them upfront and wait for my reimbursement from my insurance company. It happens like the speed of lightening! Seriously, like a weeks time! No waiting around for your insurance check! I have sent several of my friends here, and they have all had positive experiences as well. read more

I went to several different dentists when I first moved to San Francisco and they all recommended different types of dental work during the first visit that was often not covered by dental insurance. About five years ago, a co-worker who was a San Francisco native recommended Dr. Mohn. It took almost three months to schedule my first appointment. After a detailed cleaning I asked about all the work other dentists had recommended. Dr. Mohn said none of it was necessary and said to come back in six months. I've recommended Dr. Mohn to anyone who has asked for a recommendation for a Dentist in San Francisco and they have all been extremely happy with his office. I'm echoing several of the other reviews - I have been to other dentists in the past and had them attempt to push unnecessary work. Dr. Mohn and staff are people you can trust. When they tell me I need work, I know they're telling the truth, and the quality of the work is superb. Mohn has a thriving practise because he's built it on integrity. It's an awful shame, and criminal too, that other dentists try to rip off patients by doing work that doesn't need to be done. I went to one dentist and he told me I needed six different things done. I went to Mohn and he told me that none of those areas needed anything. Investigative TV news stations have done shows on the dental racket where they'll go from dentist to dentist to see what's recommended. Often dentists will insist that healthy teeth need to be drilled. The recommendations vary from dentist to dentist and they're all trying to rip you off. Not Mohn, who is a man of integrity, and the kind of dentist that all the others should be. read more

I am looking for a new dentist. I've done a lot of research on checkbook.org, yelp, etc. and called to make an appointment. The receptionist advised me that Dr. Mohn does not accept patients "in this manner" and that new business has to be through a referral. WTF??? read more

I've been seeing Dr. Mohn for over 25 years. Though I have had many filings over my life, I have never been in pain at his office. My mother, then father and now husband all see him. Terrific dentist. Been loyal to him and his staff for nearly 20 years. A good dentist is hard to find; I've had many who are butchers and overdrill and weaken teeth (which leads to profitable crowns). Dr Mohn has recommended "waiting and seeing" before taking drastic action like filling or crowning. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Mohn for more than ten years and he is the first dentist I have ever visited whose face I am actually happy to see. Visits to his office are genuinely pleasant. An honest, excellent dentist. That's hard to find. Many dentists, perhaps even most, will tell you that you need work that you don't. Before I came to Dr. Mohn, I had another dentist tell me I needed a lot of expensive work. I came to Dr. Mohn, and he explained that that work was unnecessary.
