Doctors are NOT professional, they will come over to the desk and stand there chatting and laughing while students who need medical care wait around for HOURS just to see a doctor for a referral. They are also incredibly judgmental and can be very rude once you're actually in the room. I waited almost two hours to see a doctor for FIVE MINUTES for a referral. Avoid this clinic at all costs, they are grossly incompetent, unprofessional and will waste your time. If there are tens of thousands of UBC students, and this clinic also supposedly serves the local community, how is it STILL so bad?! There are so many 1 star reviews for this clinic, we must demand better health care. This place is sad and pathetic.

I took my parents to see the doctor a few weeks ago, and she was so racist towards them just because they couldn't speak English very well. She literally told my parents to go "learn English" before coming back. If a clinic is willing to hire someone like this to front their business, I think that speaks volume to their standards. Doctors themselves are extremely hit and miss. I've had some of my worse experiences ever here. Was once told I can only get diagnosed for 1 symptom. 1 Symptom. Like what. Last year I had a cold (don't worry, it was pre-Covid), so I had a really bad cough. Was trying to get prescription cough medication and an inhaler for my asthma. This old lady literally told me I had to come back another for my "asthma problem" because it's a separate issue. Seriously, what the heck. Well, I'm never coming back.

The office is professional and very response to texting and emailing, so it makes booking appointments for me very intuitive and easy. The doc is skilled at his work and the crowns he's done for me are great and feel comfortable and natural, I can't even tell they aren't my real teeth!

I didn't know what to do so my family contacted their dentist Dr. Hou. Thankfully he squeezed me into his schedule the following day when my cousin's kids were already scheduled. He took care of my issue so easily and reassured me that I'll be ok! He could have taken the opportunity to do dental work on me, but he definitely had my best interest in mind and assured me that I already had a good follow-up plan back in the US. I then got to witness how kind and patient Dr. Hou and his team were with teeth cleaning (and attempted teeth cleaning!) for my 2- and 4-year-old nephew and niece. I was impressed how gentle, cajoling, yet non-forceful they were. It's not easy to clean kids' teeth! If I had one, or some, I would definitely send my kid(s) to Dr. Hou. His office is pretty swanky too! Asides from cute yet stylish decorations, there was a TV monitor embedded in the ceiling! I've never seen that before. I almost wished I had more dental issues or Dr. Hou was a little less ethical so that I could have the experience of  watching TV while getting dental work!

She really knows what she's doing, she seems to genuinely care about her patients, and I have not once felt that she was trying to 'up-sell' me on some unnecessary dental procedure (I have heard that this can be pretty common). She has a tooth extraction specialist come in once a month for the same fee as a regular dentist, and because of this, the removal of my wisdom teeth went so swimmingly that I felt fully recovered the next day. If you have dental insurance, Dr. Chow's office will simply charge you the difference in coverage rather than asking for the full amount and forcing you to file a claim with your insurance company. Especially in my student days, this was a god-send. The last thing that I would like to mention is that Dr. Chow's dental hygienists are charming and hilarious. They really seem to love their jobs, and this just contributes to an overall positive dental experience. I would definitely recommend Dr. Chow to anyone looking for a dentist - in fact, I recommended her to Jordan H. (first reviewer), and as you can see, he thinks as highly of her practice as I do.

Fantastic dentist! So excited to find a person like this!…read more Susan is warm, extremely competent, and runs her own clinic with very kind staff. The whole place felt comfortable, quiet and relaxed in the best possible way. The attention I received was very personalized. On practical matters, the office is easy to get to by bus or car, and parking is easy too. I was not kept waiting at all, and they processed my bills immediately with my insurer. Susan is not the kind of dentist running between patients, or passing you to her 'associates' because she's too busy doing more important things. She spends time with you, really explains things (yet talks to you like an intelligent adult), and gives you great options too choose from. I had a filling done in her office on a back molar. I can't remember the last time I had work done on my teeth where I absolutely felt nothing. Was so easy, fast, and so totally 100% painless and comfortable.

A few dollars..pfft whatever, but this was far from a few dollars. -They only did half a cleaning...HALF, then told her she had to book another appointment for the other half?? "They didn't have time on her first booking"?? Get ready for ANOTHER payment. Neither I or my wife have EVER had to go for two sessions for a cleaning & x-rays. Nor have I ever heard of this.. -An email she received in response to a query about the price was a little patronizing and that was the final nail in the coffin for her.. The short story: She's a masters student & we are both covered by her plan. Even with the coverage Alma is still quite expensive, and the estimates are quite inaccurate as is the process once you get there. I will now pay 1/3 of what she might have paid for the EXACT same thing at Kingsgate Dental & the estimates are always within a few dollars as well. The waits are also 1/3 compared to Alma (they also open on the occasional Sunday). Alma should also get someone else to reply to customer service emails lol. The bright side..?? The bottom half of her mouth is pretty clean :)

For your most important part of your body. Well... one of them at least. One of the hygienists hums a lovely little ditty throughout most of the cleaning and I gotta admit. It's kind of relaxing. They are under the UBC extended health plan here, so it is quite cheap to keep your smile looking like a million bucks if you are a student. I paid around $25 last visit. I gotta say that for the dreaded dentist visit, this place is nearly as good as it gets. Perhaps if they offered laughing gas in the waiting room I would give em 5 happy/dizzy stars.
