Our family had the most incredible stay at Charit Creek Lodge. It is one of those rare places that feels like a deep breath for the soul. From the moment we arrived, everything felt peaceful, welcoming, and thoughtfully cared for. The food alone deserves its own five stars! Breakfast, dinner, and the packed lunches were absolutely delicious. Every meal tasted comforting, homemade, and full of flavor. We loved it so much that we bought the cookbook so we could bring a little bit of that magic home with us. One of the biggest highlights was Gregg and his staff! You can feel the heart in every corner of this place. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed, and it is clear that he and his staff have poured so much love, care, and pride into creating this experience. Their hospitality made our stay feel personal and incredibly special. Evenings were unforgettable. We ended each night around the fire, looking up to see every star in the sky and even the Milky Way stretching overhead. It was the kind of beauty that stays with you. Then we returned to our cozy cabins, warmed ourselves by the wood burning stoves, and settled in for the most peaceful sleep. The cabin was spotless, charming, and perfectly designed for rest. Between the hikes, views, the atmosphere, the incredible meals, and the sense of quiet, our stay felt truly restorative. Wow wow wow wow. What a fun experience. I posted about it on social media and now my friends all want to go. They were so amazed I found it but honestly I just searched "places like the hike inn" . Side note- I love that place too. Each are beautiful in their own different but similar mountain backwoods lodge beauty. Do them both. Do all the glamping. That's why I say! First of all, super easy to book. They have a cool but somewhat odd variety. There are a few cabins with a combo of beds (full and bunk) depending on which one you choose. There are also four rooms at the horse stable. As we were a party of two, we opted for the horse stable room. The price is per person and we didn't want to monopolize too much space. We got lucky and saw availability about a week and a half out. We also got lucky cause I loved the stable rooms. The horse stable rooms were small but with all you needed. They had hooks for a bag, a lamp, side table and porch with two rocking chairs. The bed is two twin memory foams but super comfy. You are literally next to the horses though. You can't hear them at all but beware if you have allergies. I also liked that these horse rooms were a tiny walk from the Main area- there was a family of 7 with lots of kids and we had our own space. It rained post hike and we were immersed in nature comfortably on the porch. The lodge itself is also beautiful. Wood and rustic but super clean. They have a modern bathhouse and potable water. A big porch to hangout and multiple fire rings. They also have hammocks. Meals are served family style together. They have a list that they seem to rotate through. All looked and sounded amazing. Very very accommodating for vegetarians. We had chicken and dumplings (stuffed portobellos for veg) with tons of sides for dinner. Plus dessert. Breakfast was eggs and pancakes and grits and sausage. I just wish theyd use better coffee cups- those burn hands like whoa. They sell beer and wine and s'more stuff in the front. They also have a small camp store with goodies. All you really need to bring is a towel, toiletries and water bottle. Maybe a headlamp as there's no electricity. To get there you can take various hikes. The twin arches loop is the main way- we took the longer route there (around 4.2 miles) and then the shorter one back. Did some hikes around too as they have great maps available there. Charit Creek is a restful and quiet retreat where you can unplug and enjoy the nature around you. Our cabin was immaculate--no easy feat for a place with no electricity deep in the woods. The beds and bathrooms were clean and fresh. The place was quiet and serene. We enjoyed a cozy campfire by the creek in the evening. The food was amazing. Note to those with food allergies: Charit Creek can accommodate multiple kinds of food allergies. My advice for anyone who has to be as diligent as I do about the foods you eat and how they are prepared is this: Do yourself a BIG favor and email ahead of time with any questions you may have. I believe Gregg and his staff will be happy to answer your questions and give you the reassurance you need for your peace of mind. Yes. If you can handle a moderately difficult, yet short hike...do this. Charit Creek Lodge (CCL) is located only a few hours away from Nashville in a section of Big South Fork. Via I-40, a couple of highways, and some gravel roads, park your vehicle in the trailhead lot and hike 1.1 miles down into the valley where CCL sits. (Note: There's a porta-potty in the trailhead parking lot. Bring toilet paper in case the park supplied roll is out, and hand sanitizer since there's not a sink.) Early in the descent, the set of "stairs" on the hiking trail are rather scary for dogs. I'm shocked how incredibly deceptive my photos are; these "stairs" are WAY more steep than they appear in the camera's eye. I'd call it a ladder, really. My dog (who is too squirmy and almost too big to carry) took a total leap of faith from the "stairs"...literally. I think my heart stopped. Thankfully, this did not end in injury. But I won't take him down those "stairs" again without a better plan in place. The bridge across the creek freaked him out a little since it sways when you walk on it, but nowhere near the danger those "stairs" were. I knew there would be a barricade at the entrance since they were only permitting overnight guests with reservations at that time due to the pandemic. The staff greeted us and gave a quick rundown of the layout, rules, and directed us to our cabin. CCL's layout is rather unique. In a nutshell, there are multiple buildings: one small building is the kitchen...kinda the heartbeat of the place. Directly across from the tiny kitchen is the largest building which houses two "attached" cabins available for rent, the dining hall, and the Manager's Quarters. Here you will also find the site's potable water and rocking chairs on a lovely wooden porch. If you're facing the kitchen, there are two buildings on the hill to the right that house the restrooms and the showers. I'll go into more detail about those later. As you walk past the stairs to the restrooms and showers, two detached cabins appear - both available for rent and can house many people. From there, turning your gaze slightly to your right, there is another small building called the "Corn Crib", which can house up to three people. Looking sharply to the left, waaaaay off in the distance, is the horse barn, which can house both people AND horses. Restrooms and Showers: Up two flights of stairs, you first come to the restrooms; one side for women and the other for men. The women's restrooms offer two sinks, two mirrors, and three stalls, each with a toilet and a curtain for privacy. Hand soap, paper towels, and toilet paper are all provided, so no need to bring your own. There are windows and a skylight for lighting during the day, but no lighting at night, so be sure to bring your own! There was also a bottle of bleach water and hand sanitizer on the counter for use too to make it a bit more safe during the pandemic. From the restrooms, there's a small stone path that leads up to the shower house: one side for women and the other for men. The women's showers offer two stalls. Each stall has a dressing area with a shower area connected to it. There are plenty of hooks and bars to hang bags, towels, etc. The water wasn't incredibly hot, but still warm and enjoyable -- definitely NOT cold. Be sure to bring your own soap and a towel. Like the restrooms, there is a window for natural light, but that's it. So be sure to shower during the day or take water resistant supplemental light! I'm running out of characters, so I'll end with the food. It was superb. Delicious. Fantastic. Plentiful. Far too much food to consume in one sitting. Go here if you're physically able. Just returned from another top-notch stay at Charit Creek. There was no quiche in the morning. It was pancakes that I loved, and I've never even been a pancake fan. But every other word from the last stay is still true. Plus, they've added horseshoes and cornhole around the firepit. Even more fun for an outdoor getaway. Try it... go there... you will not be disappointed...if you are, well...that's just an 'IF' I can't even imagine. read more

Lots of fun for the family to enjoy hiking and outdoor activities like horseshoes and cornhole (bean bag toss). Some board games and books for the rainy days. I would highly recommend it. read more

Hiking with family & friends - rustic accommodations with great food, attentive staff Get unplugged, hike great trails & escape from city life & chaotic pace. Staff are absolutely fabulous - genuine, caring, enthusiastic about introducing you to, or continuing to foster your love of, the beautiful wilderness within the Big South Fork National Park. You have to hike down to the lodge (30-40 minutes?), which lies by Charit Creek. With the windows open in the main lodge (the oldest still-occupied structure in all US national parks), you can go to sleep to the sounds of the creek gurgling on its way downhill to the Big South Fork Cumberland River. After hours of hiking to see the Twin Arches, Needle Arch or Slave Falls, you return to the lodge, where Bethany, Kenneth or Kate greet you to ask how the day went, offer you refreshments, including a cold beer or red/white wine & tell you what's for dinner, as the great scents waft through the kitchen's screen doors. Although there is no electricity, hot water is steamy & plentiful in the showers, stars are crystal-clear and sparkling, after-dinner bonfires are magnets for lively conversations, and much is to be learned from the staff as well as manager Greg about life there, surrounded by nature's bounty. We stayed 3 nights & 4 days, and met guests from NC, Michigan, Ohio -- all friendly and full of stories of the day. Food is served family-style, and Kenneth & Kate are masters in culinary arts, using veggies & herbs fresh from their gardens. Yum, yum, yum. Board games are stacked on shelves off the dining room & a library of books left from prior guests gives you novels or tree/wildflower guides to sift through. This place was amazing. I went with my son to get a taste of off grid backpacking in a safe way. The logo itself was so clean and the views are amazing. Greg was so accommodating and knowledgeable and the company there was great with lots of storytelling. The hike in wasn't bad, a little steep getting out, but doable. I had to cut my vacation short unfortunately, but I'm already planning on going back maybe next summer. It was a great way to unplug with my teenager and have some quality, bonding time. I can't write a review to do this place justice! It is run on-site by two guys, Greg and Matt. Greg is the part-owner of the concessioner contracted to run the place. They are both amazingly friendly and helpful. Matt gave us all sorts of hiking directions. Greg gave us a historic tour. Greg cooks the meals, which are incredible! He does some amazing things to traditional home-cooking. They have beer. The site is breathtaking. Charit Creek began as a winter home to longhunters. It is in a valley with great hikes around. It stands along the Sheltowee Trace, so that through hikers can pitch a tent on the property, get a meal, take a shower, etc. The cabins date back 200 years. The cabins can house 10 people. My wife and I stayed in one by ourselves. They are primitive (no lights/electricity or running water). There are community restrooms and showers that are kept very clean. Getting to the site is a 1 mile hike from the trailhead that is not too difficult to do. If you like hiking, camping, great food, relaxed atmosphere, turning off your technology, etc. you should stay here! read more
