Because there are many merchants represented here, the pricing can be extraordinarily inexpensive in some stalls while a bit overpriced in others. But overall, the pricing is pretty fair. I love looking through each stall and finding little treasures you just can't find anywhere else. On this trip, I found what I was looking for - a milk glass pedestal bowl - but it was a little overpriced compared to the previous thrift shop I had seen it at, so I passed on it. But my favorite time to shop at the Mercantile is just before the holidays. They always have such lovely and unique gifts for my family and friends (and myself). It is much smaller than its larger competitors, but I actually think that works to its advantage. Many of the larger thrift stores have become so commercialized, selling many items in bulk/wholesale... like a dollar store, so unique pieces are hard to fine. Javellas carries many unique, well kept pieces. We were fortunate to find two brand new canvas paintings at exceptionally good prices. We will be back sporadically to find more pieces.

My experience at Retro Mania Vintage Market in Tampa was appalling. I entered with my legitimate,…read moretrained service dog and was denied access simply because she wasn't wearing a vest. I explained that the ADA doesn't require a vest, yet the owner doubled down and compared it to a bar ID. That analogy is ignorant and flat-out wrong. Under 28 CFR 36.302(c)(6), a business may only ask if the dog is required because of a disability and what task it's trained to perform. No documentation, no vest. The Department of Justice also clearly states that no vest or ID is required. What made it worse was that the owner was holding his own dog, what appeared to be a new puppy, while denying my trained service animal. He then told me, quote, this becomes a liability for me if something happens. If his concern was an interaction between his own puppy and my trained service dog, that is a situation created by him, not me. I am also a disabled veteran. Being treated this way while relying on a service animal was humiliating and unacceptable. Disabled people, including disabled veterans, shouldn't have to educate business owners on basic federal law just to enter a store. This was unacceptable, discriminatory in effect, and completely avoidable.
